TEXT:“Back in the Year 2015”

037

02:“With an S2 engine on board,”

038

02:“Evangelion Unit 01 has become an absolute being!”

Mbryo: Seele seems to know that Unit 01 already possessed the Fruit of Knowledge, which is why they are so alarmed about her gaining the Fruit of Life through the incident in Episode 19; they know that she's now capable of achieving a level of existence equal to that of god by having both Fruits. Which raises a question: why does Unit 01 have the Fruit of Knowledge in the first place? The fact that Seele had no qualms about installing the S2 Engine in Unit 04 or the MP Evas shows that 'normal' Eva units, the ones cloned from Adam, do not normally possess both fruits. This implies that simply possessing the soul of a Lilin is not enough to grant an Evangelion the Fruit of Knowledge. So where did Unit 01 gain hers? Did she inherit one from Lilith?

Dr. Nick: I would assume it's simply a matter of Yui being an active resident soul who went in willingly and knows what she's doing. She's able to reason, plan ahead and apply her knowledge, whereas the other poor souls in other cores are trapped and mostly dormant. Even if they're able to exert their will, as in the (admittedly very special) case of Unit-00, it's just blindly lashing out; momentarily destructive, but not a threat to Seele's plans.

039

040

03:“We have no use for an actualized god.”

Mbryo: Seele seems to truly detest the idea of man creating a new god, which is only natural considering their implied roots as a heavily religious organization. Speaking of which, the term 'god' is used to represent various different concepts in the Evangelion franchise, but in this particular case, they are referring to a being that possesses both the Furit of Life and Knowledge. Even Adam, who is the being 'closest to god' according to CI, isn't an actual god in this respect.

Dr. Nick: When discussing Seele's plan, the Classified Information text kind of wobbles between godhood and near-godhood. More than anything, Seele's dismay at Yui's little stunt feels like a hypocritical case of "godhood for me and not for thee".

041

KEEL:“We must not create a god.”

??:“We cannot allow that man to create a god. Gendo Ikari, is he a man that can be trusted?”

Mbryo: It should be pretty apparent to them by now that Gendo isn't trustworthy, but they have no alternative until the Angels are defeated.

042

FUYUTSUKI:“Gendo Rokubungi? I've heard of him.”

043

FUYUTSUKI (OFF):“No, I've never met him,”

TEXT:“Back in the Year 1999”

044

FUYUTSUKI (OFF):“but there's always some rumor going around about him.”

FUYUTSUKI (OFF):“What? He asked to be released into my custody? No, I'll come. When should I come over there?”

TEXT:“Kyoto Prefecture Police Department”

045

IKARI:“I heard about you from a certain person,”

046

IKARI:“so I wanted to meet you.”

RussianRiz: Those bruises, they certainly come as a shock when you remember that it's Shinji's father!

UrsusArctos: The crooked little smile and the unshaven chin are just as big a shock. I doubt anyone seeing him would think that this aging bad boy could become the cold, harsh, scheming Commander of Nerv.

047

FUYUTSUKI:“You're a rather coarse man, to get into a drunken brawl.”

048

IKARI:“There was no time to talk. They just picked a fight with me.”

049

IKARI:“I'm not very good at being liked, but I am used to being treated coldly.”

050

FUYUTSUKI:“Well, it's none of my business anyway.”

IKARI:“Professor Fuyutsuki, you seem to be exactly the person I expected you to be.”

051

FUYUTSUKI (MONO):“Yes, my first impression of him was of distaste.”

052

FUYUTSUKI (MONO):“And back then, seasons and autumn still existed in this country.”

053

FUYUTSUKI:“Are you serious?”

054

YUI:“Yes, I am seeing Mr. Rokubungi.”

Mr. Tines: The "good girls go for bad boys" motif

055

FUYUTSUKI (MONO):“When I heard that, I wasn't able to hide my surprise.”

056

FUYUTSUKI:“I never would have thought you would share your time with him.”

057

YUI:“Oh, but Professor Fuyutsuki, he's quite a sweet person. It's just that no one knows it.”

Dr. Nick: Gendo might have initially viewed Yui as a means to an end, but he ended up falling for her for real. But did Yui genuinely have feelings for him? It's a relevant question to ask, especially since we don't get any scenes with just the two of them together. Heck, this episode shows more chemistry between Gendo/Naoko and even Fuyutsuki/Yui. But considering the structure of the episode and how these flashbacks are paired with the tragic final moments of Misato and Kaji's relationship, the parallelism might indicate that the ultimate answer is yes. Kaji loves Misato but is still willing to leave her by doing the self-sacrificing thing in order to save the world, so perhaps this was the case with Yui as well.

058

FUYUTSUKI:“Maybe it's more blissful not to know.”

YUI:“Did I inconvenience you by introducing you to him?”

059

FUYUTSUKI:“No, I'll admit that he's an interesting man, though I can't get to like him.”

060

FUYUTSUKI (MONO):“But within our circle, the common opinion was that he had approached Yui for her talent and for the organization backing her.”

UrsusArctos: This is the same sketch of Gendo as from Cut 048 of the Opening and gives him an intensity and dignity that the unshaven boor from the bar brawl utterly lacked.

Mr. Tines: Much more like Straker in the "photo" than back in cut 046

Mbryo: According to CI, Yui is the daughter of a prominent member of Seele, which is why she was so deeply involved with them. Assuming that is canon AND assuming that Seele's members hadn't changed since then, this would imply that Shinji's grandpa is behind one of those Seele monoliths.

061

FUYUTSUKI (MONO):“Later, I would hear rumors that this organization was called Seele.”

Dr. Nick: Talking about mystery motivations, according to CI, Gendo married Yui so that he could become a member of Seele himself. But as an outsider, he obviously wouldn't have been initiated into Seele's deep secrets until he was in, and I doubt Yui spilled the beans ahead of time, as they would've probably been under the heaviest of surveillance while dating. So what was Gendo's goal then prior to his initiation? Was he simply after power as a member of a secret society?

UrsusArctos: Apropos of the discussion of the murderous Aum Shinrikyo cult in Cut 019 I've read translated Japanese articles that talk of how Aum gained substantial popularity among the Japanese intelligentsia and on college campuses in the late 1980s and actively recruited all over the Japanese academic scene. That makes me think Gendo was recruited by Seele at the lower levels, far from the occult secrets, and married Yui in order to gain a quick path to the top as a social climber. Maybe he was tired of being beat up in bars and wanted to make himself one of the glitterati? If so, it'd make Gendo's own ascension in social rank something of a gender subversion. Social climbing through marriage has historically been associated with women in many cultures and continues to do so in romance novels marketed to straight women - it's apparently one of the reasons why works as dreadful as Twilight and Fifty Shades of Grey got so popular.

062

TEXT:“Year 2000, Antarctica”

063

FUYUTSUKI (MONO):“The Second Impact. That tragedy occurred in the final year of the 20th century.”

64-67

068

TEXT Year 2001

FUYUTSUKI (MONO):“And the first year of the 21st century was pure hell. There is no other word to describe that year.”

069

TEXT:“Year 2002”

310

TEXT:“Ruins of Toyohashi City, Aichi Prefecture”

311

312

MAN (OFF):“I hear temperatures will rise above 30 degrees Celsius again today. It certainly is hot over here.”

313

FUYUTSUKI (OFF):“That isn't even rare in Japan these days.”

314

FUYUTSUKI:“Summer has lasted for almost a year now. It's rough on the body.”

MAN:“You don't want to move to that ship up there?”

315

FUYUTSUKI:“You mean the next town over? That place constantly stinks of oil.”

UrsusArctos: Interesting how Fuyutsuki describes the ship as a "town"...it shows how desperate living conditions have become for post-2I refugees.

316

FUYUTSUKI:“I just can't get to like it.”

317

MAN (OFF):“But still, I never imagined you'd set up shop in such a place. I had a lot of trouble finding you.”

318

FUYUTSUKI:“They're short on doctors here, like everywhere else. It's a mockery, but it's better than nothing.”

Mr. Tines: If in doubt, become a doctor. In the "you never see things once", this gets reprised in Shin Eva

319

320

321

FUYUTSUKI:“Going to Antarctica at this late date?!”

MAN:“It is a formal investigation of the incident commissioned by the UN Council. It is a provisional organization, but I would think you could be of more use to the world there, than working as an unlicensed doctor here,”

322

FUYUTSUKI:“That's "former professor". By the way, my column is blank. Who recommended me?”

MAN:“Professor Fuyutsuki.”
