Title2

EYECATCH B:“EPISODE #11: THE DAY TOKYO-3 STOOD STILL”

Mr. Tines: And Klaatu barada nikto to you, Anno-san.

UrsusArctos: Combined with the editing here Anno-sensei spells out to observant viewers that the one in Klaatu's position in this episode is behind the blackout.

143

144

WOMAN (OFF):“Pursuant to the declaration of a state”

145

TEXT:“Nozoku Takahashi”

WOMAN:“of emergency in this district, emergency vehicle, passing through!”

WOMAN:“Excuse me,”

UrsusArctos: The characters say Takahashi Nozoku ( 高橋 覗) which is a reference to Studio Ghibli Producer Nozomu Takahashi (Takahashi Nozomu 高橋 望), a friend of Anno's as mentioned in our Character Name Origins page. I don't know if there's an additional little in-joke in replacing "Nozomu" (to wish or hope) with "Nozoku" (to peek)? As an aside, it's interesting how many occupations in Japan include uniforms and white gloves!

Pluto: This is what a typical political campaign vehicle looks like. During election time, these vehicles drive down the road blaring campaign slogans through megaphones. Yes, it is annoying. It was cool to see Hyuga repurpose this vehicle to give the emergency evacuation order.

146

WOMAN (OFF):“that's a dead end!”

147

HYUGA:“It's okay! Charge!”

148

HYUGA (OFF):“This is an emergency, after all!”

MAN (OFF):“Roger!”

UrsusArctos: "Remember, Takahashi stays calm in situations like this..." she said in Cut 119A, but she's the one visibly panicking now!

149

WOMAN (OFF):“No! Stop the car!”

150

FUYUTSUKI (OFF):“This Geo-Front was designed to be a self-sufficient colony,”

151

FUYUTSUKI (OFF):“even when isolated from the outside. Theoretically, it's impossible for all of the power sources to fail at once.”

152

RITSUKO (OFF):“Which means that someone did it deliberately, correct?”

IKARI (OFF):“Their purpose is likely to be to investigate this facility.”

153

RITSUKO:“So they could determine HQ's structure through the progress of restoration?”

FUYUTSUKI:“Disrespectful bastards.”

RITSUKO:“I'll run a dummy program through the Magi.”

154

RITSUKO:“That will make it harder for them to get a complete picture.”

IKARI:“I'll leave it to you.”

RITSUKO:“Yes, Sir.”

155

FUYUTSUKI (OFF):“The first havoc wreaked upon our headquarters wasn't caused by an Angel, but by another member of our species. Just goes to show.”

IKARI:“Ultimately, the enemy of mankind is mankind.”

UrsusArctos: Wait for Episode 25' for those words to truly become prophetic. Our power saboteur manages what neither Ireul, nor Zeruel, nor the JSSDF, nor Lilith lifting the entire damn Geofront out of the Earth succeed in doing, taking all of Nerv HQ offline in one go!

156

SHINJI (OFF):“This would normally take only two minutes. Is this really a corridor?”

ASUKA:“Once we get over there,”

157

158

SHINJI:“I've heard that from you four times already.”

ASUKA:“You really are a nitpicky man!”

159

ASUKA (OFF):“You're always focusing on the stupidest things.”

REI:“Quiet.”

ASUKA:“What now, Miss Perfect?”

REI (OFF):“Someone's voice.”

160

HYUGA (OFF):“Ang... ...proaching...”

161

SHINJI & ASUKA:“That's Mr. Hyuga! Hey! Hey! Hey!”

162

HYUGA (OFF):“An Angel is approaching! Repeat, an Angel is approaching!”

163

SHINJI & ASUKA:“An Angel is approaching?!”

REI (OFF):“There's no time to waste. Let's take a short cut.”

ASUKA:“I'm the leader! Don't just take over! So where's this short cut?”

dzzthink: I read a theory in the forums, that Rei's good sense of direction along these corridors comes from having lived at Nerv all her life.

UrsusArctos: That makes perfect sense. Add to that, Rei isn't human in the regular sense of the term, so she might have an innate sense of direction that the others lack.

164

ASUKA:“This may be the quickest way, but we look really lame.”

SHINJI:“Say, what do you suppose the Angels are?”

UrsusArctos: If Jeopardy existed in the NGE universe, I wonder what answer the late Alex Trebek would've put up to get "What are the Angels?" as a question? Anyway, Shinji's question is answered obliquely just two episodes later, and explicitly in Episode 25'.

165

ASUKA:“Why are you talking about that at a time like this?”

166

SHINJI:“Angels, messengers of God, enemies named after servants of Heaven. Why are we fighting them?”

167

ASUKA:“What are you, stupid? Strange beings are attacking us. If you're going through a fire, you've got to brush away the embers, of course!”

UrsusArctos: The contrast between the two is pretty striking. Shinji seems to have had the Angel question in mind for a while, but waited until things were truly abnormal to wonder aloud why he was fighting Angels. Asuka, however, has zero curiosity about her enemy, and can't understand why someone would be curious about them either.

dzzthink: Throughout this episode, Asuka berates and dismisses Shinji for his philosophical dialogues. He does have a good point in questioning what these Angels are and their motives since they always seem to be attacking Nerv at one specific place.

Zusuchan: It's little moments like these that showcase Shinji can actually be quite smart and thoughtful. It's a shame he refuses to really utilize those capabilities most of the time, though.

168-172

173

ASUKA:“To the right!”

174

REI:“I think it's left.”

ASUKA:“Oh, be quiet!”

175

ASUKA:“What do you think, Shinji?”

193

SHINJI:“Well... I wonder?”

Dr. Nick: The proper anime nomenclature for the dilemma Shinji is facing here is Color Wars.

UrsusArctos: Judging from the cut number, 193, it was between 192 and 193-2, hence the brief inclusion of one of Gendo's hands right when he's about to manually launch the Evas. I suspect that Cuts 168-172 were repurposed and meant to take place around the position of those two cuts, but were added back as 173-177, with 193 being included later (a production oversight, perhaps?) Perhaps they reordered the cuts to clean up the narrative, but the number juggling here gives an insight into the editing of an old traditionally produced anime.

177

ASUKA:“Honestly! I'm the leader, so just shut up and follow me!”

178

SHINJI (OFF):“I still think this is weird. We're going uphill.”

Dr. Nick: I doubt the kids have been properly underground yet, considering they could see a glimpse of the campaign van through the pipe maze in cut 162.

179

ASUKA:“What do you mean, you still think? You're such a nag!”

180

181

UrsusArctos: I know it's supposed to be sunny outside, but the slightly ominous red glow hints that whatever's behind the door isn't pretty.

182

ASUKA:“Look, this has got to be it this time!”

183

UrsusArctos: That's a fairly thick armored door, but no better than tissue paper against an Angel. Shinji and Rei sensibly crouch in a position of cover, while Asuka has her body completely open to attack from whatever's on the other side.

184

UrsusArctos: One step further and Ol' Daddy Longlegs would've squished her.

185

186

187

UrsusArctos: Looking at an Angel without being in an Eva has got to be pretty darn scary, even if said Angel doesn't have it in for you personally. I can imagine a vocal exchange between the two going something like this -
Matarael: "Oh, hi there, Asuka! I see you have big blue eyes, just like mine! See you later! ^__^"
Asuka: *SHRIEK*

Mr. Tines: One design that gets close to the angels from the book of Ezekiel.

Frogatr: I wonder if these eyes within triangles have sparked any crazy Illuminati theories.

Dr. Nick: The eye itself is likely a Nadia reference, but the triangle does give it that Illuminati flavor. Somewhat relatedly, another famous conspiracy organization Majestic 12 gets cheekily referenced in the spin-off game Girlfriend of Steel 2.

The overall eye spider design might also be a reference to one of Combattler V's weekly monsters, since Anno has apparently watched it.

188

dzzthink: *sarcastic clapping*

189

ASUKA:“Well, we've visually confirmed the Angel's presence. Now, we know we have to hurry.”

Zusuchan: Asuka collects herself quite quickly, heh.
