UrsusArctos: Does car insurance in Tokyo-3 cover "being swallowed by living shadow"?

051

dzzthink: This angel is characteristically striped like a zebra, and noticeably more black than white, casting an ominous shadow across the sun-lit Tokyo-3 city. This coloring seems to refer to the psychology concept for "splitting" or "black and white thinking", which is also referenced in the second title of the episode "splitting of the breast". This is a central theme of the episode as Shinji's seeming confidence at the start of the episode, and acknowledgment of his positive qualities, are quite literally enveloped by the negative experiences in his life as he is analyzed by Leliel.

UrsusArctos: As we'll discover later, the striped sphere is actually the Angel's shadow, with the Angel's actual body being the shadow on the ground. Your explanation for the choice of the black and white coloration is fantastic, and fits the theme of the episode perfectly. It also marks how Episode 16 is a sort of transition from the lighter side of Evangelion (everything from Episode 08 to this episode) to the dark final third of the show where all the characters negative experiences come out. As an aside, the Nadia fan site thesecretofbluewater.com had a memorable but absolutely ridiculous theory linking Leliel's Zebra-like appearance with the absence of Zebras in Nadia.

TEXT:“Alert”

053

WOMAN (OFF):“Five minutes until evacuation of the Western District is completed.”

MAN (OFF):“Target is advancing slowly at 2.5 km/hr.”

054

055

RITSUKO:“You're late.”

MISATO:“I'm sorry. What's going on? What about the radar observation center at Fuji?”

056

AOBA:“They didn't detect it. It just suddenly appeared directly above us.”

057

HYUGA:“Pattern orange. No AT Field detected.”

MISATO:“What does that mean?”

UrsusArctos: "Pattern Orange" is rare, with only the infected Eva-03 and Armisael (cycling from Blue to Orange) showing this pattern. Reichu suggested that this particular pattern indicated an ambiguity of form, something that was explicit in case or Armisael.

058

RITSUKO:“A new kind of Angel?”

IBUKI:“The Magi are withholding judgment.”

UrsusArctos: After Ireul, they should've been prepared for an Angel to turn up in an unexpected form, but Leliel is so weird that nobody's initially sure if it is an Angel or not. And if it were possible that it were not an Angel...what kind of non-Angel abominations must be possible in the Evangelion universe for that to be remotely possible?!?

059

MISATO (OFF):“Damn! Commander Ikari just had to be gone at a time like this.”

060

061

062

063

MISATO (OFF):“Can you all hear me?”

064

MISATO:“I've sent you all of the target's data.”

065

MISATO (OFF):“That's all we know right now. Approach it carefully and observe its reactions,”

066

MISATO (OFF):“and, if possible, lure it into the airspace”

UrsusArctos: As mentioned on the Evangelion Ranged Weapons page, Rei's sniper rifle is modeled after the Accuracy International Arctic Warfare Magnum rifle.

067

MISATO (OFF):“outside of the city limits.”

068

MISATO (OFF):“One of you take point and the other two are backup,”

069

MISATO (OFF):“got that?”

ASUKA:“Ma'am?! I think Shinji ought to take point!”

070

071

ASUKA:“Well, this is a job for the high-scoring, utterly fearless, Number One synch-rate holder, right?”

072

ASUKA (OFF):“Or don't you feel up to it, Shin?”

073

SHINJI (OFF):“I can do it! I'll show you how it's done, Asuka.”

ASUKA (OFF):“What was that?!”

MISATO:“Hey, you two...”

074

075

SHINJI:“You said it, didn't you? "You are Number One!"”

076

MISATO:“Well, that was...”

077

SHINJI:“Combat is a man's job!”

UrsusArctos: Wait till you see who's doing the real combat for you, kiddo...

078

ASUKA (OFF):“Talk about out of date! Unit 02 will back him up.”

REI (OFF):“Unit 00 will back him up as well.”

MISATO:“Damn kids, running with it...”

RITSUKO:“Shinji's gotten to be quite admirable, hasn't he?”

MISATO:“No, I'm going to have to chew him out when he gets back.”

UrsusArctos: "Out of date" is right, although Asuka herself is not above using gender stereotypes to mock Shinji. Not to mention that Misato is guilty of giving Shinji rather mixed signals when it comes to gender - her "Bear with it! You're a boy, aren't you?" in Episode 01 comes to mind in particular.

Mr. Tines: Except in the end, discipline be damned.

079

RITSUKO:“You'll make a good guardian.”

UrsusArctos: She proves wrong about that - which hints that she isn't as good a judge of character as she thinks she is.
