110

FUYUTSUKI (MONO):“Even if that might eventually lead me”

TEXT:“Year 2003, Hakone”

111

FUYUTSUKI (MONO):“to the name of Yui Ikari.”

TEXT:“United Nations Artificial Evolution Laboratory”

112

UrsusArctos: The contrast between Fuyutsuki - framed against the sky, the mountains and trees, as opposed to Yui, who is seen in the next shot framed almost as though she were caged in her Eva form, is pretty striking. Fuyutsuki is transitioning from the freer world outside to the caged one that Yui just stepped out from.

113

114

FUYUTSUKI:“It has been a long time.”

YUI:“Yes, it has.”

UrsusArctos: A long time ago Yui's height was miscalculated, and it had to be revised downwards because, as this shot shows, she used to wear three-inch heels.

115

UrsusArctos: I would love to see the script comment for Yui's expression in this shot, because whether she's put off by Fuyutsuki's abrupt greeting or is entirely aware of what he's walking into would say plenty about her character.

116

UrsusArctos: Notice Gendo's "Chief of Research" designation, spelled out in plain English. This episode involves Gendo heavily in the scientific side of the Evangelions, which makes complete sense for a research organization like Gehirn. How that qualifies him for commanding a paramilitary organization like Nerv is an open question, and it seems all the odder that he's all too willing to leave scientific matters at Nerv to Ritsuko or occasionally Fuyutsuki.

117

FUYUTSUKI (OFF):“Why do you hide the existence of the giant of light?! You guys knew about the Second Impact, didn't you? That it would happen on that day?”

UrsusArctos: Gendo may not show much in his eyes, but look closely at his mouth: he's smiling. Everything is proceeding according to the scenario, and he won't even put up the pretense of being surprised that Fuyutsuki knows what he does.

118

FUYUTSUKI:“You said you were lucky enough to get out the day before.”

119

eldomtom2: This briefcase is a reference to an identical one used by Commander Straker in British sci-fi series UFO, the most explicit of many influences the series had on Evangelion. Comparisons could indeed be made between this episode and UFO 's similar episode Confetti Check A-OK.

UrsusArctos: I should add a shout-out to Jason Hellwege who made the same observation on the EML a long, long time ago. Sadamoto is on record stating that he modeled Gendo and Fuyutsuki after Ed Straker and Alec Freeman, and this sequence actually takes the UFO comparison deeper. Gendo is recruiting and testing Fuyutsuki the same way Straker recruited and tested Paul Foster.

120

FUYUTSUKI:“Was it also luck that you took all your research with you?!”

121

122

123

IKARI:“I am surprised that this material escaped destruction.”

FUYUTSUKI:“I did a thorough investigation of your assets. I'm sure raising a child is expensive, but isn't the amount rather large for you to have privately?”

UrsusArctos: I seriously wonder what someone like Gendo would do with all that cash. Perhaps the young Gendo was something of a hedonist and could spend it on expensive beer (and not get beaten up at bars) but his older, ascetic self doesn't seem the sort to have much use for money beyond paying the bills.

124

IKARI:“You impress me, Professor Fuyutsuki. Why not transfer to the department of economics?”

Dr. Nick: Yup, Gendo's a villain.

125

FUYUTSUKI:“I'm going to go public about Seele and the Dead Sea Scrolls being secretly behind the Second Impact. I have no intention of letting the people who caused that get away with it!”

126

IKARI:“Feel free. But before you do, there is something I would like to show you.”

127

128

FUYUTSUKI:“We're going down quite a ways.”

IKARI:“Does it worry you?”

FUYUTSUKI:“Somewhat.”

129

130

131

FUYUTSUKI:“What is this?”

132

IKARI (OFF):“A cavern left behind by someone, who was not us. Though eighty-nine percent of it is buried.”

FUYUTSUKI:“An underground cavern that was originally a neat spherical shape...”

Mr. Tines: Tell us it's a Forerunner artifact without telling us it's a Forerunner artifact.

UrsusArctos: It certainly seems a better way of going about it than having Cortana say "this tunnel is not a natural formation" when said tunnel is metallic, covered in electronics, and on a 10,000 kilometer Forerunner giant hula hoop/antisonuvabitch machine in space.

328

FUYUTSUKI:“Is this the same as the underground cavern found at the South Pole?!”

IKARI (OFF):“The data from them are virtually identical.”

FUYUTSUKI:“Do you intend to repeat that tragedy once again?!”

Mbryo: At this point, the true identity of the giant in Terminal Dogma is unrevealed to the viewers. But the fact that are two identical Geofront structures in both Antarctica and Hakone implies that Adam is not the only mysterious giant found by man; that there are more than one such being.

329

330

FUYUTSUKI:“Is that what you're doing?!”

331

IKARI:“Whether we are or not, please determine that for yourself.”

133

IKARI:“All the resources mankind has to offer are being poured into that facility.”

Dr. Nick: "You don't actually think they spent $20,000 on a hammer, $30,000 on a toilet seat, do you?"

134

135

AKAGI (OFF):“Oh, Professor Fuyutsuki.”

136

FUYUTSUKI (OFF):“Akagi, you too?”

AKAGI:“Yes, this is the best place to research the fundamental theories for the bio-computers of the future.”

Dr. Nick: Remember Cut 086: Seele is not a totally secret organization. They've needed to come out of the shadows somewhat in order to start in earnest working towards their end goal, which they earlier considered "naught but the pipe dreams of their ancestors". Scientists like Fuyutsuki know about the organization, and it has a terrible reputation. And despite this, Naoko Akagi happily jumps in with the creepy Kabbalistic cult simply because it's a cool research opportunity. She exemplifies the sort of myopically fixated scientist Kiel was lambasting in the opening flashback, and she stands in contrast to Yui and Fuyutsuki, who are scientists who see the bigger picture and take appropriate action to prevent wrongdoing.

137

FUYUTSUKI:“I see.”

AKAGI:“I intend to name it Magi.”

FUYUTSUKI:“Magi? After the three wise men from the East? Is this what you wanted to show me?”

AKAGI:“No, this way, please.”

138

AKAGI (OFF):“Ritsuko, I'll be right back.”

139

140

FUYUTSUKI:“What is this?”

141

FUYUTSUKI:“Is this that giant?!”

AKAGI (OFF):“Here at Gehirn, we call that giant Adam. But this is not it. It is not the original.”

FUYUTSUKI:“Then...”

142

AKAGI:“Yes, it is an Eva, made from Adam by man.”

143

FUYUTSUKI:“An Eva?!”

144

IKARI:“This is the Adam Revival Project, generally known as Project E, and this is our mockup, Eva Unit 00.”

UrsusArctos: Very much a Jissoji scene, and one of the coolest in the show. Gendo and Naoko both look smug and completely in control, a far cry from their ultimate fates.

145

FUYUTSUKI (OFF):“A prototype for a god?!”

Mbryo: The helmet design seen here is similar to that of Unit 00, since Unit 00 is the prototype. Except for the multiple eyes-makes one wonder if they were actually planning to grow multiple eyes on the planned Eva unit, seeing how Unit 02 has actual four eyes.

146

IKARI:“Fuyutsuki, work with me to create a new era in the history of mankind.”
