SE <<ガンッ!! (grinding)>>

The arm stops moving and is grabbed.

SE <<パキッ>>

Mr. Tines: Now, and only now, can an Eva overcome the cutting power.

The shot pulls out. With a jerk, Unit One pulls the angel towards it.

SE <<グホン>>

The angel crashes into Unit One; its entire body hanging over and covering Unit One.

SE <<ズンッ>>

EVA:“Grrrrrr”

Its horn is piercing the hole of the angel’s eye.

SEELE-01: I took me several re-watches to notice the Eva's "horn" actually goes inside Zeruel's eye socket...

SE <<(pulling) ガンッ>>

With the backlash, the angel’s arm is pulled off.

SE <<バシュルル>>

UrsusArctos: This particular kick is aimed right at the core, revenge for the previous core-stabbing. Even though Zeruel towers over Eva-01 at the start of the shot, the shot composition quickly demonstrates how the tables have turned.

The angel crashes into the forest beyond Kaji.

It slides to a stop with a dragging sound.

SE <<(vigorous action and menace)>>

Kaji turns his head.

His expression is slightly sorrowful.

Pan up from the angel’s torn off arm.

Everyone is in dismay.

While afraid, Ibuki speaks.

IBUKI:“Th... the Eva has restarted!”

Unit One builds up sensation.

It places the arm up to where its missing left arm was.

Mbryo: This is the first time that we see Unit 01's teeth exposed. I'm guessing that this is supposed to be some kind of a reveal, showing the eerie resemblance between an Eva's teeth and human teeth. The red hexagonal things seen in her mouth earlier in the series are merely restraints intended to keep her mouth forcibly shut. The problem is that Unit 01's real teeth seem to come out of nowhere in this episode; they were conspicuously absent when she opened her mouth in the previous episodes. And from this point onwards, the red 'fake teeth' are completely replaced by real teeth, and are only briefly seen in a single scene in EOE where an animator decided to draw them for some reason.

It is fusing.

UrsusArctos: The flesh bubbles in a similar manner to Eva-01's eye regenerating in Episode 02, except this time it's Zeruel's flesh. Given that Zeruel's name literally means "Arm of God" and Eva-01 is about to become a literal god, the appropriation of Zeruel's arm to regenerate her own is very apropos.

The Angel’s hand transforms into Unit One’s arm.

SE <<シュルシュルル>>

Mbryo: The blurry distortion effect of an A.T. Field can be seen as Unit 01 integrates Zeruel's flesh into her own body and shapes it into an arm identical to her old one, leading to the implication that Angels and Evangelions are capable of using their A.T. Fields to define their physical appearance. This is consistent with Episode 10, where the same blur can be seen as Sandalphon morphs from his vaguely fetus-looking form to his completely disparate adult form.

Misato, overcome with surprise and feeble, speaks.

MISATO:“Incredible...”

Ibuki, beyond Ritsuko’s shoulder.

Ibuki, unable to understand, raises up and turns around, shouting to Ritsuko. She’s in a panic.

IBUKI:“No way... this can’t be true! Unit One’s synchro rate has gone over 400%!”

Ritsuko closeup. She is alone.

RITSUKO:“That means... she has awakened.”

She is somewhat sorrowful.

SEELE-01: Well, the jig is up! Up until now Ritsuko has been, with little success, misleading or being vague about the Eva's true nature.


Pluto: I think this is the first mention of Unit 01 as "she".


Mbryo: Does this mean that the Eva's resident soul is usually 'asleep' when it's not in berserk mode?

Unit One’s head in front. It raises its hand up. (like an orchestra conductor)

SE <<グワッ>>

It is raised overhead, then it is swung downward violently!

UrsusArctos: Look closely at Eva-01's hand and you'll see the familiar blur of an A.T. Field. (First spotted by Reichu in ye olde days)

The AT field is torn up. The angel’s body is gouged as well.

SE <<ズバッ>>

The angel is blown away; half its face is left. Suddenly its AT field greatly skews in alignment, and the upper half of its body is blown away.

SE <<シャッ>>

The lower half of its body collapses! It’s AT field is dyed in red.

SE <<ヴシュアッ チチャ>>

UrsusArctos: Eva-01 performed Sectumsempra on Zeruel before Harry Potter ever was a thing. Seeing the body that resisted an N2 mine point blank get sliced up like a sausage and the A.T. Field that held Eva-00 at bay get split in two shows just how scarily powerful this new offensive A.T. Field really is, and how an awakened Eva is capable of doing things nobody suspected was possible before.


Mbryo: This scene shows how good Yui has gotten at using her 'Eva powers' since the first berserk incident. While she did some impressive stuff against Sachiel, now she's so powerful that she's capable of destroying Zeruel, a much stronger Angel, in just a single shot. Remember how in Episode 02, she had to rip open Sachiel's A.T. Field with her both hands and then proceed to physically beat him up. Now she's capable of achieving a far more destructive effect with just a casual flick of her hand. Or perhaps this is due to her reaching a record 400% synchro rate with Shinji, since in the Manga, it appears that Shinji is capable of unlocking more of the Eva's innate abilities as his synchro rate spirals upwards during the fight with the MP Evas.
