Title2

EYECATCH B:“EPISODE #17: FOURTH CHILDREN”

115

FUYUTSUKI (OFF):“The city, a paradise made by mankind.”

116

IKARI:“Once driven from Paradise, man had no choice but to escape to this earthly existence, side by side with death. Our own paradise, created by the resourcefulness that this weakest of beings was forced to develop.”

FUYUTSUKI:“To protect ourselves from the fear of death, to satiate our thirst for pleasure, a paradise we created ourselves.”

UrsusArctos: Gendo is rambling on about biblical stuff. But the description of Tokyo-3 as a paradise is ridiculous, since both men know perfectly well that it's meant to protect the Geofront below and act as a battleground between the Evas and Angels. And that's precisely what has happened since the beginning of this series.

117

FUYUTSUKI (OFF):“This city's truly such a paradise. A armed city made to protect us.”

IKARI (OFF):“A city of cowards fleeing from the outside world, filled with enemies.”

UrsusArctos: Something sensible, at last! But why anyone would run to a city besieged by eldritch monsters is beyond me. Just who were the non-Nerv personnel brought to Tokyo-3 and why?

118

FUYUTSUKI:“Cowards do live longer. That's fine.”

119

FUYUTSUKI (OFF):“New Tokyo-3, Nerv's camouflaged intercept fortress. The continually-delayed seventh construction phase will be finished soon. At long last,”

120

FUYUTSUKI (OFF):“it will be completed.”

121

FUYUTSUKI (OFF):“to the Committee?”

IKARI (OFF):“Just as the facts state, the cause is unknown.”

122

FUYUTSUKI:“But at this stage, it's a catastrophic loss.”

123

IKARI:“Unit 04 and the 2nd Branch are acceptable. Even with the S2 engine, we may have lost the sample, but we still have the data in Germany. This installation and Unit 01 will be sufficient.”

FUYUTSUKI (OFF):“But the Committee was furious.”

IKARI:“Of course, it was an unscheduled accident.”

UrsusArctos: Another hint, casually tossed, that there is more to Eva-01 than meets the eye.

124

FUYUTSUKI:“Seele must also be frantically adjusting the schedule.”

125

IKARI (OFF):“Incidents not depicted in the Dead Sea Scrolls can occur. This ought to teach the old men a lesson.”

UrsusArctos: Given that we never learn the contents of the Dead Sea Scrolls or the extent of the prophecies therein, it's hard to figure out what the old men are so worried about or whether they even have a reasonable cause for being mad at Gendo.

126

ANNOUNCEMENT:“The Third District Transformation and Direction Weapon experiment”

127

KAJI (OFF):“The intercept system here is finally going to be completed,”

KAJI (OFF):“and there isn't even one measly party planned? Nerv sure is an uptight organization.”

KAJI (OFF):“Nerv sure is an uptight organization.”

IBUKI (OFF):“Well, you know how Commander Ikari is.”

ANNOUNCEMENT:“is on schedule.”

ANNOUNCEMENT:“Will Dr. Nishizawa of the Technical Department, Section 3,”

ANNOUNCEMENT:“call Section 2 of the Development Division immediately.”

UrsusArctos: Like Fuyutsuki said in Episode 03, the intercept system is a waste of taxpayer money, so its completion is insignificant. Zeruel demonstrates that spectacularly two episodes later. As an aside, Kaji knocks a couple of the cans out with his careless throw, littering the floor in a display of careless machismo.

128

KAJI:“What about you?”

IBUKI:“Are you serious, Mr. Kaji? I'll tell Miss Katsuragi and Dr. Akagi.”

UrsusArctos: Kaji, take the damn hint and leave Maya alone. Her body language and threat to complain to Misato and Ritsuko is a very clear "no".

129

KAJI:“I'll cover up your mouth first...”

MISATO (OFF):“So how's work going?”

UrsusArctos: This isn't flirtatious or romantic; this is straight up sexual harassment. And Kaji's line here reads like the prelude to a full-on sexual assault, which makes it all the more disgusting.

130

KAJI:“Oh, it's going, I guess.”

IBUKI:“Well, I have work to do. Excuse me.”

UrsusArctos: It's sad that Maya acts deeply embarrassed, covers her face and slinks off when she was the one about to be forcibly kissed by Kaji, when it's Kaji who should slink away in shame.

131

MISATO (OFF):“Far be it from me to comment on your private life,”

UrsusArctos: So he actually took a moment to reorganize the cans and replace those he'd knocked out of place. Interesting. If what he were trying with Maya weren't so creepy, I'd take the scene as a sign there was something more to him than met the eye (as with so much else in Eva).

Dr. Nick: Devil's advocate here, but was the whole harassing Maya part just Kaji's attempt at James Bond style tradecraft? He wants to pass a shocking piece of information to Misato, but he knows he's being watched, so he engineers a situation that potentially looks more like an organic couple's argument. Had they put an ominous shot of a security camera here, the scene might be a teensy bit defensible.

132

MISATO:“but would you keep your hands off our young girls in this emergency situation?”

133

134

KAJI:“This isn't your jurisdiction, though, is it? Could I hit on you then?”

135

MISATO:“That depends on how you answer my questions.”

136

MISATO:“You know the secrets of Adam down there and the Marduk Institute, right?”

137

KAJI:“What secrets?”

138

MISATO:“Don't play dumb!”

KAJI:“Asking for help isn't like you.”

139

MISATO:“I can't afford to care right now. I don't have that luxury.”

140

MISATO:“What's behind the oh-so-convenient discovery of the Fourth Child?”

KAJI:“I'll tell you one thing.”

141

142

KAJI:“The Marduk Institute doesn't exist. Nerv itself is pulling the strings.”

143

MISATO:“Nerv itself? Commander Ikari?”

144

KAJI:“Go check out Code 707.”

145

MISATO:“707? Shinji's school?”

UrsusArctos: Combine that with Ritsuko's "all the pilot candidates have been gathered together for their protection" and Kaji's spelling out why a sham like Marduk is able to select its pilot candidates at will.

146

SHINJI:“Miss Misato!”

147

MISATO:“What is it?”

SHINJI:“Miss Ritsuko wants to see you about the business trip you're going on tomorrow.”

MISATO:“All right. Thank you.”

148

MISATO:“I'll catch you later.”

KAJI:“Yes, Ma'am.”

149

KAJI:“How about it? Wanna go out for tea?”

150

SHINJI:“You know, I'm a boy.”
