Title2

EYECATCH B:“EPISODE #09: BOTH OF YOU, DANCE LIKE YOU WANT TO WIN!”

165

TOJI (OFF):“But I wonder”

166

TOJI:“what's happened to Shinji.”

KENSUKE:“He's been gone three days, right?”

UrsusArctos: Toji seemed to be wearing his uniform without an undershirt in Cut 015 but here we see him with a purple undershirt like Kaworu in Evangelion 3.0.

167

TOJI:“Hey, there's the class rep.”

HIKARI:“Two of the three stooges.”

UrsusArctos: That she's still on talking terms with them suggests that she never uncovered their little creeper photograph racket. I can't imagine Hikari showing as much interest in Toji as she does later on if she'd found out about it.

168

TOJI:“Why are you here?”

HIKARI:“To see how Miss Sohryu is doing. What about you two?”

KENSUKE:“To see how Ikari's doing.”

TOJI & KENSUKE & HIKARI:“Why did you stop here?”

169

SHINJI & ASUKA (OFF):“Yes?”

170

171

172

TOJI:“Traitor!”

KENSUKE:“Matching outfits yet again, in this day and age?!”

173

KENSUKE:“I can't believe this!”

174

SHINJI & ASUKA:“Well, Miss Misato said that Japanese start by dressing the part, so she made us...”

175

HIKARI:“That's filthy, you two!”

UrsusArctos: The animation for Hikari goes wild to the point of being scary. I can imagine a Little Red Riding Hood-style exchange based on that display of teeth alone!
Little Red Riding Hood: "My! What big teeth you have, class rep!"
Hikari: "The better to gobble you up with, dear!"

176

SHINJI & ASUKA:“You're wrong!”

177

HIKARI:“Two wrongs don't make a right!”

MISATO (OFF):“Oh, welcome everybody!”

178

TOJI:“Could ya”

179

TOJI:“please explain what all this's about?”

180

181

TOJI:“You shoulda told us that to begin with.”

HIKARI:“So how is the coordination coming?”

MISATO:“Well, as you can see...”

182

ASUKA:“Are you surprised?! There's no way I could possibly lower myself to Shinji's level!”

thewayneiac: This Japanese Twister doesn't make any sense.

Pluto: This game is reminiscent of Dance Dance Revolution or the "Bemani" series musical arcade games which were extremely popular at the time in Japan.

Zusuchan: This episode is probably altogether the most obviously cartoonish and unrealistic of the entire series. The idea of Shinji and Asuka connecting through the necessity of comradeship is smart and the added caveat of music (one of Shinji's favorite things ever) is nice too.

Dr. Nick: Note also that despite her talk, the error indicator shows that it was Asuka who messed up.

183

ASUKA:“It's just an utterly impossible idea!”

184

MISATO:“Then you give up?”

185

ASUKA:“You don't have anyone else, do you?”

186

MISATO:“Rei?”

187

REI (OFF):“Yes, Ma'am.”

188

MISATO:“Why don't you try?”

REI:“Yes, Ma'am.”

189

190

191

192

193

MISATO:“It looks like I should alter the operation to pair Shinji and Rei.”

194

Zusuchan: Despite her arrogance, the idea of being replaced and useless is deeply horrifying for Asuka still.

195

ASUKA (OFF):“No! I can't stand this!”

196

ASUKA (OFF):“I've had enough!”

197

198

HIKARI:“Asuka!”

TOJI:“Even the Devil cries sometimes.”

HIKARI:“Ikari!”

199

200

HIKARI:“Go after her!”

201

202

HIKARI:“You made a girl cry! Take responsibility!”

UrsusArctos: *sigh* Another instance of this episode ageing poorly in terms of gender relations...

Zusuchan: I wouldn't be so sure Anno and Co. genuinely believe in what Hikari's saying. There's many instances of NGE skewering with traditional gender roles and characters' qualities that don't conform to their gender roles aren't shown as inherently wrong. People like Kaji, Shinji, Asuka have non-masculine and non-feminine qualities, but those are shown as just natural parts of them as people. If anything, I feel NGE on the whole doesn't consider the idea of traditional gender roles and a clear divide between genders/sexes as serious issues worth clearly considering or upholding. This comment is most likely just a way to move the plot-and besides, Hikari is absolutely the kind of boring little girl who's stuck in tradition and the "normal" status quo.

203

SHINJI (OFF):“Well...”

ASUKA:“Don't say anything.”

Zusuchan: This sequence with a temporarily crouching and shaken Asuka clearly upholding herself while Shinji also crouches is fascinating, because there's a similar situation in ep.22, except there she's unable to uphold herself and Shinji is unable to even go to her level, as he did here. There's also the fact that this scene actually shows both Asuka and Shinji as still quite flawed-she's still unwilling to let go of piloting Eva as her gateway to respectability, usefulness and love nor of her arrogance, while he's still on the fence about actually committing himself to an attempt to understand and truly connect with her, preferring to wait on the sidelines.

Edit: Thanks to Ursus for linking to the relevant cut in 22.

204

205

ASUKA:“I know. I have no choice but to pilot the Eva.”

206

ASUKA:“I'll do it.”

207

ASUKA (OFF):“Since it's come to this, I'll show up both Rei and Misato!”

208

SHINJI:“You don't have to show them up or anything.”

ASUKA:“You're being too easy on them!”

209

ASUKA (OFF):“You're a man, aren't you?!”

Zusuchan: Legitimately feels like Asuka thinks masculinity is preferable to femininity, at least if this comment and her way of holding herself are anything to go by.

UrsusArctos: When I think hard about it, I find it hard to get a fix on where Asuka lies on either American or Japanese notions of masculinity and femininity, but perhaps that's because I've long since come to see her character as having elements of both and think of those as being Asuka's traits rather than "masculine" and "feminine". However, it is clear that Asuka isn't entirely happy with female biology - she hates her periods and doesn't want to be a mother. It does make me wonder if she ever wished she were biologically male, whether to simply avoid those aspects of female biology or in hope that being of the opposite sex would make her mother care more for her.

Zusuchan: Yeah, she's kind of a mixture of both masculine and feminine traits, but then again so are most people. She certainly seems to uphold herself in general pretty aggressively and dominantly, though. Asuka is extremely focused on appearing exceptionally strong, in a rather traditionally masculine way, it feels to me.

210

ASUKA:“For their attack... on my pride... I'll pay them back ten times over!”
