ASUKA (OFF):“You're a man, aren't you?!”

Zusuchan: Legitimately feels like Asuka thinks masculinity is preferable to femininity, at least if this comment and her way of holding herself are anything to go by.

UrsusArctos: When I think hard about it, I find it hard to get a fix on where Asuka lies on either American or Japanese notions of masculinity and femininity, but perhaps that's because I've long since come to see her character as having elements of both and think of those as being Asuka's traits rather than "masculine" and "feminine". However, it is clear that Asuka isn't entirely happy with female biology - she hates her periods and doesn't want to be a mother. It does make me wonder if she ever wished she were biologically male, whether to simply avoid those aspects of female biology or in hope that being of the opposite sex would make her mother care more for her.

Zusuchan: Yeah, she's kind of a mixture of both masculine and feminine traits, but then again so are most people. She certainly seems to uphold herself in general pretty aggressively and dominantly, though. Asuka is extremely focused on appearing exceptionally strong, in a rather traditionally masculine way, it feels to me.
