	089	MISATO:“Shinji still hasn't returned either.”	Dr. Nick: Didn't Int Division 2 inform Misato that Asuka is hospitalized in a comatose state? Seems like a big deal. UrsusArctos: I think she wanted to look at Asuka's empty room just so she could remember the time Asuka was around. She misses her.
	090	MISATO:“I've failed as a guardian.”	Mr. Tines: It finally sinks in.
	091		UrsusArctos: Shinji's listening to the Ode to Joy instead of whatever he usually listens to, and it continues to play over the background of the conversation with Kaworu. Looks like that brief meeting left a lasting impression.
	092	ANNOUNCEMENT:“Central Dogma is currently open. Please use Route 3 to transfer.”

It's a very good thing.” SHINJI:“You think so?” KAWORU:“I'd like to talk more with you. May I come with you?”	dzzthink: Despite his origins, these moments highlight Kaworu's emotional intelligence, which contrasts with Rei's calmness and discipline. He seems genuinely interested in Lilin, often remarking about music and the symbols of people's relationships. }}

	104		Dr. Nick: I'm just going to broach this topic very briefly since the Commentary Project has unfortunately never had any real Ikuhara experts on board (nor any Ultraman experts either, which is a huge flaw), but it's a well-know bit of industry lore that Anno and the Revolutionary Girl Utena director Kunihiko Ikuhara are good friends, and it's been rumored that Anno based Kaworu more or less on Ikuhara. Ikuhara's own take is that he wasn't the inspiration for the character, but the public bath scene was based on a particular situation with the two of them at an onsen.
	105	KAWORU:“You go to such extremes to avoid first contact. Are you afraid of connecting with other people? If you don't get close to others, you'll never be betrayed and you'll never hurt each other. But you'll also never be able to forget your loneliness. Humans can never banish their loneliness for good, because being human means being alone. But humans are able to go on with their lives because they're able to forget it every so often.”	Dr. Nick: Kaworu preaching to the audience of one, and Anno to the audience of many. Mr. Tines: The alternating background image seems like pretty gratuitous tech for the context, even if simply projected; if meant to be a configurable display screen, the more so.
	106		Mr. Tines: You never see things just the once; but what a contrast with the last episode. dzzthink: Kaworu seems to understand Shinji quite well and makes very bold actions to neutralize the A. T. Field that Shinji puts around his heart. In this way, Shinji opens up to Kaworu more than he ever has to anyone else.

	112		Mr. Tines: The reaction that launched a thousand ship-fics. UrsusArctos: I don't think I've seen Shinji blush that acutely since the "Thermal Expansion" scene in Episode 10. Dr. Nick: And that took two girls. dzzthink: Doesn't help that Kaworu is standing up at this point. Avert your eyes Shinji.

	114	KAWORU:“You're so delicate, like glass, especially your heart.”	Dr. Nick: We'll discuss more about what exactly Seele is attempting in this episode soon enough, but here's one idea to ponder at this point: Did Seele send Kaworu to intentionally drive Shinji over the edge by betraying him? After all, in EoE they say in their ritual chant, "Through the destruction of the ego of Evangelion Unit 01's pilot, humanity shall now undergo Instrumentality", which suggests they are relying on mindbroken Shinji as a linchpin of their plan, hoping he'll choose instrumentality (or death, if you want to be negative about it) when offered. Literary Eagle: The official book The Essential Evangelion Chronicle: Side B says that Kaworu approaching Shinji was not necessary for his mission, and came from a desire for a human relationship. In other words, Kaworu genuinely wanted to form a bond with Shinji, and was not following instructions from Seele to break him. I go into further analysis on Kaworu's motives (including more information from that book) in this article: Space Jesus, Take the Wheel. That article uses the French version of the book, however an English version of the book was released later. UrsusArctos: Extremely interesting, however I should note that Chronicle is Third Tier Canon which means its provenance starts to get questionable. Take it with the proverbial grain of salt.

	116	KAWORU:“Yes, you have my regard for it.”

	118	KAWORU:“It means, I love you.”	UrsusArctos: Whether suki should be translated as like or love (as it is in the Platinum subtitles used here) has been a matter of some controversy. However, if things had gone according to either draft version there would have been zero doubt about the correct translation. dzzthink: Still I can't help but feel like in English, 'like' isn't strong enough to mean Kaworu's like. 'Love' can be too direct to say to someone but it isn't unlikely for someone like Kaworu to really say this to Shinji.
