TEXT:“Year 2015”

147D

IBUKI:“Excuse me, Ma'am?”

RITSUKO:“Oh, I'm sorry.”

148

RITSUKO:“Let's hurry up and retest Rei.”

IBUKI:“I haven't seen Miss Katsuragi around today.”

RITSUKO:“You're right.”

149

RITSUKO:“Miss Katsuragi?”

150

MISATO:“Right! Misato Katsuragi! Nice to meet you!”

151

RITSUKO (OFF):“Mother, I met a girl named Katsuragi the other day.”

TEXT:“Year 2005 New Tokyo-2, Nagano Prefecture 2nd Tokyo University, School Grounds”

152

RITSUKO (OFF):“Other people will only look at me from afar, and each time, I am reminded of the weight your name carries, but this girl has no reservation towards me for some reason.”

153

RITSUKO (OFF):“I am told that she is the sole survivor of that expedition.”

154

RITSUKO (OFF):“She was apparently aphasic for a time, but now, she chatters away a mile a minute as if to make up for lost time.”

155

AKAGI (OFF):“Ritchan, I am still burrowed underground, the same as always. I've grown tired of the lunches they provide. On the surface, they have apparently begun working on the plans for New Tokyo-3 in accordance with the Second Capital Transfer Project.”

156

RITSUKO (OFF):“Lately, Misato hadn't been showing up at the university, and when I finally got her to tell me why, it was so idiotic. Apparently, she had been sleeping with her boyfriend at her apartment, for an entire week!”

157

RITSUKO (OFF):“I feel like I have seen an unexpected side of her.”

158

159

160

RITSUKO (OFF):“She introduced him to me today. He's good-looking, but I just cannot get to like his frivolous attitude.”

161

162

AKAGI (OFF):“As I recall, you have never been good around boys, Ritchan. In the end, being raised only by a woman... No, I'm sorry. I have left you to your own devices for so long. It's awful of me to act like a mother only when it's convenient.”

UrsusArctos: This is another instance where Evangelion shines - Naoko's reply makes perfect sense in context, and reveals so much about her and Ritsuko in one go.

164

AKAGI:“A mother...”

TEXT:“Ashinoko Lakefront, Hakone”

Dr. Nick: Here begins the big important flashback scene of the episode and the whole show. It's so important, in fact, that we return to it in the penultimate scene of EoE, just before One More Final. The two central pieces of information it reveals are: 1) Yui has her own conspiracy running inside Seele's bigger conspiracy, and she's recruited Fuyutsuki into it, and 2), Gendo is not aware of this. At this point in time, he's still Seele's loyal toady.

334

FUYUTSUKI:“Today is just like every other day. The disappearance of autumn from this country is truly sad. The Secret Dead Sea Scrolls that Seele possesses... If things happen as it is written in those scrolls, the Third Impact will happen in another decade or so without fail.”

YUI:“The organizations are meant to prevent the final tragedy. That is what Seele and Gehirn are.”

FUYUTSUKI:“I support your ideas, not Seele's.”

Dr. Nick: The "final tragedy" line might seem a little odd, considering this discussion happens between two people who are both in the know. Sure, Seele and Gehirn exist, as an intermediate step, to prevent an Angel-triggered version of 3I from happening, but does it really fundamentally matter to some random person if they're annihilated in an Angel 3I or in Seele's custom 3I a week or so later? But as we see later in cut 178, the Human Instrumentality Project doesn't exist yet as a concrete plan, so for now Seele's immediate focus probably is in preparing for Angel-killing. Yui, however, is ahead of the game and has realized that the path Seele is on won't mean anything good for humanity at large, and that humanity now includes a child of her own.

335

YUI:“Professor Fuyutsuki, it will be very dangerous to unleash that seal upon the world.”

336A

FUYUTSUKI:“I have already handed the data over to Ikari.”

Dr. Nick: Fuyutsuki was about to go all whistleblower on Seele. Did Yui recruit him into her anti-Seele operation in order to save his life, as he would've surely been quickly snuffed out if he tried to go public with what he knows?

UrsusArctos: Given his flippant response to the incriminating material, I suspect Gendo simply used it as bait for Fuyutsuki and collected it himself afterwards, without Yui being involved.

337

FUYUTSUKI:“It's not something that can be accomplished by an individual after all.”

338

336B

339

340

FUYUTSUKI:“There won't be a repeat performance of the stunt I pulled earlier.”

341

FUYUTSUKI:“And I've sort of received a warning. Getting rid of me couldn't be easier for them, it seems.”

342

YUI:“The same goes for all the survivors. It's a simple thing to destroy people.”

343

FUYUTSUKI:“But that's no reason for you to become an experimental subject.”

YUI:“I will go along with the flow of things. After all, that is why I am at Seele. For Shinji.”

Dr. Nick: Going back to the "Yui is a stealth villain" fan theory I mentioned in Cut 34 - yeah, I don't subscribe to it. Yui has to make grievously difficult decisions, but the show depicts her as a hero. Just compare the serene mood of this scene with the eerie tilted-shadows vibe of the scene starting from Cut 178. The latter is functionally almost the same scene, except this time it's Gendo confiding in Fuyutsuki about his spanking new conspiracy within Seele's conspiracy, but the visual language is totally different and full of menace.
