Title2

EYECATCH B:“EPISODE #13: LILLIPUTIAN HITCHER”

UrsusArctos: The English title is pretty darn clever, being a sly reference to Ireul's Lilliputian size (look up Gulliver's Travels if you want an explanation) and the Angel hitching a ride on the way in.

126

Zusuchan: Probably as good a time as any to say that the whole idea of a computer-like creation being considered "alive" is interesting, especially with the previously stated/hinted similarities between the Angels and humans. So is Ireul, a collection of organisms who collaboratively make up a computer also "human" then? Eva seems to harbor interesting ideas in regards to the definition of "human".

127

RITSUKO (OFF):“Look, this is the border between the normal and heavy water.”

IBUKI (OFF):“There's a higher level of oxygen here. Their preference is pretty obvious.”

128

AOBA:“The area where ozone is vented in to maintain aseptic conditions isn't contaminated.”

MISATO:“So does that mean that its weakness is oxygen?”

UrsusArctos: Guess what, it's another Andromeda reference, since the Andromeda organism showed a distinct vulnerability to oxygen and a preference for carbon dioxide. Although the mystery behind how Andromeda functioned was never solved in either the book or movie versions, both featured discussions of how its growth was affected by the sort of radiation, acidity-alkalinity, and so on. No such luck here, although as an SF fan I love this little homage.

dzzthink: I haven't read Andromeda Strain, although I saw some scenes of the TV show. Anyway, I've never heard of organisms preferring carbon dioxide over oxygen as it's usually the reverse unless we are talking about plants and algae.

UrsusArctos: Not to turn this into a general biology discussion, but you seriously need to read the book. Apart from tying into a multitude of things in this episode and NGE, it's a great science fiction story and an interesting thought experiment on extraterrestrial life. That aside, don't plants, algae (phytoplankton included) and photosynthetic bacteria comprise most living organisms on Earth? If they didn't preferentially consume carbon dioxide and excrete oxygen as a waste gas, mammals like us would never have evolved!

129

RITSUKO:“It would seem so.”

130

131

132

HYUGA:“Injecting ozone. Concentration is increasing.”

AOBA:“It's working, all right.”

133

FUYUTSUKI:“Will this work?”

134

135

IBUKI:“It appears Zero A and Zero B will recover.”

AOBA:“The area around the pipes has returned to normal.”

HYUGA:“As expected, the central portion is proving to be tougher.”

FUYUTSUKI:“All right, inject more ozone.”

136

RITSUKO:“This isn't right.”

137

AOBA:“What? It's increasing?”

138

HYUGA:“Something is wrong. Heat levels are increasing.”

139

AOBA (OFF):“The contaminated area is spreading again.”

140

IBUKI:“It's no use! The ozone is no longer having any effect.”

HYUGA:“Now it's absorbing the ozone.”

RITSUKO:“Stop the ozone!”

141

RITSUKO (OFF):“Amazing..”

Mr. Tines: The rainbow coloured dendritic frame is a contrast to the quasi-regular pattern shown at other times, that look like they could arise from some form of cellular automata.

dzzthink: These patterns almost resemble the ridges of a brain and there are images of neural networks, making the Angel seem like a biosynthetic organism with cyber-capabilities.

142

RITSUKO:“It's evolving.”

143

144

MISATO:“What's wrong?”

145

AOBA (OFF):“Something's hacking into the sub-computer. Intruder unknown.”

146

HYUGA:“Not now! Damn it! Dealing with C-mode.”

147

AOBA:“Unfreeze the barrier. Open a decoy entry.”

148

AOBA (OFF):“Eighteen seconds to completion of trace.”

HYUGA (OFF):“No human being could do this.”

MAN (OFF):“Decoy entry has been avoided.”

MAN (OFF):“Deploying barrier.”

MAN (OFF):“Barrier has been penetrated.”

MAN (OFF):“Open another false entry.”

149

AOBA:“Trace complete. The hacker is inside this facility!”

150

AOBA:“B Wing basement, in the Pribnow Box!”

151

152

153

IBUKI (OFF):“Optical pattern is changing.”

UrsusArctos: Ireul's patterns in the last image look a little like Van Gogh's Starry Night.

154

AOBA:“Those glowing lines are electronic circuits. This is just like a computer.”

HYUGA:“Opening decoy entry. Failed. We've been blocked.”

155

MISATO:“Sever the main cable.”

MISATO:“Fire the lasers.”

IBUKI (OFF):“It's generating an AT Field. No effect.”

MAN (OFF):“Negative, it refuses to accept the command.”

156

AOBA:“It's accessing security's main computer bank. Cracking the password.”

157

AOBA (OFF):“Twelfth digit... sixteenth digit... D word has been cleared!”

dzzthink: These look a little like genetic sequence patterns.

158

HYUGA:“It's broken into security's main bank!”

159

HYUGA (OFF):“It's reading the main bank. We can't stop it.”

FUYUTSUKI:“What is its objective?”

AOBA (OFF):“Scanning the main bus. This code is... Oh, no!”

160

AOBA:“It's going to infiltrate the Magi!”
