TEXT:“Oomiya”

DELIVERY MAN (OFF):“Hello?”

327

SHINJI (OFF):“Yes!”

TEXT:“Welcome Nerv Party”

DELIVERY MAN (OFF):“Is there anyone from Nerv here?”

328

TEXT:“Cool Cool”

DELIVERY MAN (OFF) I need your signature here. Thanks so much.

SHINJI:“From Mr. Kaji?”

329

SHINJI:“What could it be?”

SHINJI:“The bath is over there, to the left.”

UrsusArctos: No APRS (Acute Penguin Reaction Syndrome) this time!

330

TEXT:“Bath Men's Today”

331

332

SHINJI:“Heavenly!”

Frogatr: Now why is Pen Pen wearing his backpack for this bath but not the one earlier? Is Pen Pen less comfortable in a public bath? Maybe just around Shinji? Who knows, Pen Pen continues to be Evangelion's most mysterious character.

Dr. Nick: Pen Pen was originally meant to be the true final boss of the series. Hence the vaguely bird-like nature of the angel face design which is subtly mirrored in the design of Pen Pen's backpack; the beak-like noses of several of the Human Instrumentality Committee members; the Black and White Moons being referred to as eggs; the headless, winged statue associated with Kaworu being a poultry reference, etc.

333

SHINJI:“I never knew a bath could feel this good.”

MISATO (OFF):“Shinji, can you hear me?”

SHINJI:“Yes, Ma'am!”

334

MISATO (OFF):“Would you throw me the body shampoo?”

ASUKA (OFF):“We ran out of ours.”

335

SHINJI:“Here it comes.”

ASUKA (OFF):“Roger.”

336

ASUKA (OFF):“Ouch! You idiot! Watch where you're throwing! You suck!”

SHINJI:“Sorry.”

ASUKA (OFF):“Don't hit me in some weird spot.”

MISATO (OFF):“Let me take a look. Wow, your skin is so soft and smooth, Asuka!”

ASUKA (OFF):“Don't! You're tickling me!”

MISATO (OFF):“How about right here?”

ASUKA (OFF):“Don't touch that!”

MISATO (OFF):“Come on, it doesn't wear out!”

337

338

339

SHINJI:“It expanded. How embarrassing!”

340

341

UrsusArctos: Our first glimpse of Misato's scar, censored in the opening and hidden underwater in Episode 02. This souvenir of Second Impact hints at how deep Misato is truly connected to Evangelion's backstory. Asuka, who had lived with Misato in Germany, never got to see this, it turns out.

342

MISATO:“Oh, this? I got this in the Second Impact.”

UrsusArctos: Misato's facial design and nonchalant, bordering on cheerful demeanor make her look like Anthy Himemiya from Revolutionary Girl Utena in this scene, which seems fitting considering how much trauma she's hiding. We see Misato get the sole ringside seat to Second Impact at the start of Episode 12.

Zusuchan: Interesting, considering how most consider Himemiya to be inspired somewhat by Rei instead-though Misato's outgoing demeanor coupled with a hidden darkness arisen of trauma makes some sense as inspiration too. I know Ikuhara and Anno are supposedly friends-interesting considering Anno seems to be a right-leaning centrist while Ikuni is very definitely left- and I wonder how much Ikuhara likes Eva and was inspired by it. (Anno certainly likes his work-Eva was supposedly inspired by Sailor Moon and NTE has a few TV!Utena references. Hell, Anno even wanted Ikuhara as part of Eva's crew!)

343

ASUKA:“You know all about my past, don't you?”

dzzthink: Misato and Asuka share a serene moment with each other, with Asuka confessing scars of her own. Here, Asuka is no longer proud but vulnerable, showing empathy towards Misato's history.

UrsusArctos: The response came off to me as fearful and shameful rather than completely empathetic, with Asuka looking away and trying not to bond over past trauma. You'd imagine that Misato would've learned about Asuka's past in Germany and sought to empathize with her (after all, it's Misato who breaks the ice here), but that apparently hasn't happened either. We don't get to see the full extent of Asuka's past until Episode 22, and when we do, it is horrific.

344

MISATO:“Well, yeah. It's part of my job.”

345

MISATO:“It's all ancient history for both of us. We shouldn't let it bother us.”

UrsusArctos: The sunset visually prefigures the credits of Death, and the unusually broad expanse of water in front of them prefigures Kaworu's appearance at an eerily similar scene, bringing back a haunting reminder of Misato's ancient history (her father, from whom Kaworu gets his appearance). This scene, and her words, are loaded with both irony and foreshadowing in a way that only Evangelion can pull off.

Zusuchan: Speaking about Death, I'd just like to quickly say that I consider it, despite being a simple recap movie, pretty worthwhile, because its way of recapping Eva by simply rehashing a bunch of associations and aesthetics and intentionally paring everything down to the minimum required to get the point across is quite refreshing for a recap film.
