Ladies first!

Screenshots Cut # Description/Dialogue Commentary

048

AOBA (OFF):“We just got this report from the patrolling battlecruiser Haruna. "Huge submerged object detected off Ki'i peninsula. Sending data."”

UrsusArctos: The Ki'i Peninsula is to the south-west of Hakone, as is Suruga bay where the Angel surfaces, which means it was walking a straight line up under the coast from the south-west to the north-east. (See additional comments about the Haruna)

Additional Commentary

UrsusArctos: Although the ADV dub and subtitles call the Haruna a "battlecruiser", the Japanese term used is jun'yokan, meaning "cruiser", as opposed to jun'yosenkan or literally "cruiser battleship" for a battlecruiser. The Netflix version corrects this. The really was a Kongo-class battlecruiser called the Haruna, sunk during the Second World War, and there has since been the helicopter destroyer Haruna which made it into service till 2009, although it's no battlecruiser. Since the largest vessels of the JMSDF, including their helicopter carriers, take on the name "escort ship"(goei-kan) in Japanese or "destroyer" in English to indicate a defensive role rather than an offensive one (as of early 2021), this suggests a genuine change in the status of Japan's maritime forces in this universe. Anno had stronger and more openly supportive feelings about the subject of Japanese militarism in Gunbuster in particular, but that seems to have been toned down significantly in Evangelion.

049

HYUGA:“The data has been collated.”

050

HYUGA (OFF):“Wavelength pattern Blue. Confirmed to be an Angel.”

051

FUYUTSUKI:“All personnel, go to battle stations, Level One.”

Title1

SUBTITLE:“Episode #09 Moment and Heart Together”

052

MISATO (OFF):“The recent battle severely damaged”

UrsusArctos: All this time, and they're still at work demolishing Ramiel's corpse.

053

MISATO (OFF):“the intercept system of New Tokyo-3.”

UrsusArctos: It's a bit weird that the corpse should continue to pose problems to Tokyo-3's intercept system. Ramiel was never shown making much of a mess, unlike in Rebuild 1.0 where the Sixth Angel demolished multiple layers of Tokyo-3's defenses.

054

055

MISATO (OFF):“And our operational capability for actual combat is virtually nil.”

056

MISATO (OFF):“Therefore, we'll crush the target in a single blow”

057

MISATO (OFF):“at the water's edge, right before it makes landfall!”

058

MISATO:“Units 01 and 02 will mount an attack in a series of waves. In other words, close in and take turns.”

SHINJI & ASUKA:“Roger.”

059

ASUKA:“This sucks. It's my Japanese debut. Why won't she let me take it out myself?”

SHINJI:“It can't be helped. That's the strategy.”

ASUKA:“Let me tell you something, just don't get in my way! Why did someone like him get chosen to be a pilot?”

dzzthink: Love the dialogue between Shinji and Asuka during this episode, as Shinji cowers in the corner of his own screen.

UrsusArctos: The briefly deformed faces and Utena-style expressions add to the comedy. Asuka's arrival brings about a level of overt comedy to the show that contrasts with the earlier grim tone.

061

062

063

064

065

066

ASUKA:“Two against one isn't a fair fight. I don't like it. Not my style.”

MISATO:“We don't have the luxury of choosing”

067

MISATO (OFF):“our means to survive.”

Mr. Tines: Establishing that there's mobile infrastructure enough to work around the problem of range anxiety

UrsusArctos: Mobile infrastructure that is pretty cool but seldom used, unfortunately. This episode and the following one are the only times we see the Evas deployed any significant distance outside Tokyo-3.

068

069

SHINJI:“Here it comes!”

070

071

UrsusArctos: Heeeeere's Israfel! The taijitu (yin-yang) symbol on Israfel's face emerging from the spray makes it look very cool and intimidating in this shot, but as we'll see, Israfel is one of the weaker Angels.

072

073

074

MISATO:“Commence attack!”

075

ASUKA:“Okay, I'll go first! Back me up!”

076

SHINJI:“Back you up?”

ASUKA (OFF):“Ladies first!”

SHINJI:“Sheesh, don't order me around! You're the new one!”

Zusuchan: Ooh, Shinji's got some backbone here. Interesting.

077

078

079

ASUKA:“I can take him!”

080

081

082

UrsusArctos: The sign on the building being smashed says "Studio Fantasia", which is the name of the studio that helped animate Gainax's Otaku no Video. I believe this was first spotted on the ancient Eva mailing list but the sole reference I have for that is this archived thread. According to Dr. Nick, animation studios getting smashed is a running joke in anime. Macross did the same thing with Artland and Studio Nue buildings, which is where Anno picked up the joke from. (EDIT: I really should have checked the credits- Studio Fantasia animated this episode! See the comment from Dr. Nick below)

Dr. Nick: I popped in my Platinum 02 disc to confirm this, and Studio Fantasia is credited as one of the cel painting studios of this very episode. According to the ANN encyclopedia, they did cel painting on Episodes 8, 9 and 11, so this probably counts as self-destruction. This sort of cheeky studio self-destruction also comes in other, related forms. If you're into 1990s anime, keep your eyes peeled for the always-crashing Sunrise Air Lines.

083

084

UrsusArctos: Israfel, like Sachiel, blinks uncomprehendingly at an incoming attack. Unlike Cut 071, the two halves of the yin-yang have a blue/pink color contrast.

085

086

087

088

089

090

SHINJI:“Amazing!”

091

092

Zusuchan: I so hope I'm not the only one who finds this shot quite sexual. (Also note that Asuka would be the dominant party here).

093

ASUKA:“Well, Third Child?! A fight should be elegant and without waste.”

UrsusArctos: You'd have a kill and full bragging rights if that had been any other Angel, but this one has a surprise you won't like...

094

095

096

097

Zusuchan: Not really sure what that does to my previous glimpse of sexual metaphors, unless the twins are the result of Asuka's horrifying rape of their mother or something? This has really gone into awfulness quite quickly, but for my defense, I would like to point out Anno does love his fucked-up sexual metaphors too.

Dr. Nick: This splitting ability is a classic monster of the week gimmick, seen for example in Tadao Nagahama's super robot shows, although the monsters in those tend to be mechanical rather than meaty. I'm a bit disappointed we don't get to see any of the usual sandwiching action here, but of course, the following quick off-screen defeat is probably funnier.

098

UrsusArctos: And the Israfel twins are now fully formed and ready to fight! If I remember right, that three-eye arrangement was on the turrets of some of the Neo-Atlantis vehicles in Nadia which is the most likely reference to it (although there are other three-eyes from the same era, like the Pfhor from Bungie's Marathon). Like the previous face, the new face has a slight beak at the bottom.

099

100A

MISATO:“That's cheating!”

UrsusArctos: So, did Israfel eyebeam the Evas to send them flying, or simply throw them? I could never tell. And I'm surprised that Misato didn't land up with plastic splinters in her hand after crushing that phone.
