103

UrsusArctos: Here we have the Spear of Longinus, carried under wraps on a Midway-class aircraft carrier. That thing sure is loooong in this cut.

Frogatr: ...the Spear of Loooooonginus, then?

104

FUYUTSUKI (OFF):“The South Pole, a world of death which permits no life to exist.”

105

FUYUTSUKI:“Or should I simply call it Hell?”

Zusuchan: Am convinced this is a Divine Comedy reference. And not the only one in Eva.

106

IKARI:“Nevertheless, we, mankind, are here. We're living things, and we're alive.”

107

FUYUTSUKI:“That's because we're under the protection of science.”

IKARI:“Science is the power of man.”

Dr. Nick: Important lore base loading, as Gendo succintly explains the Fruit of Knowledge. We'll learn about the Fruit of Life a bit later when the super solenoid starts to get referenced.

108

FUYUTSUKI:“That arrogance is what caused the tragedy of fifteen years ago, the Second Impact.”

109

FUYUTSUKI (OFF):“And here is the end result. This is a greater punishment than we deserve. This is truly the Dead Sea.”

UrsusArctos: Largely recycled from Episode 08 Cut 119 with the same ship types.

110

IKARI:“Yet this is a world that has been purified, purged of the original sin.”

FUYUTSUKI:“I'd prefer a world where people live, no matter how stained with sin.”

MAN (OFF):“Reporting. Telegram received from Nerv Headquarters. An Angel has been detected in orbit above the Indian Ocean.”

Mr. Tines: This particular notion of Purgation seems to be hinting at the Impact making some kind of reset to zero; but the broader use of such wonky theology is not confined to Evangelion (e.g. Symphogear AXZ)

UrsusArctos: Episode 21 makes the reset to zero clearer in more scientific terms with effects like the elimination of all life down to the microbial level, and a change in atmosphere confined to Antarctica alone. Speaking of Antarctica, it seems like Sahaquiel matured somewhere in the vicinity. They've detected it over the Indian Ocean, and a more or less straight path to Tokyo-3 would place its point of origin somewhere near Antarctica (there's no way an embryo for an Angel that size could remain in orbit so long undetected).

111

HYUGA:“It appeared suddenly, two minutes ago.”

112

AOBA:“We have video of the target.”

WOMAN (OFF):“Search Satellite 6 moving to that orbit.”

MAN (OFF):“Two minutes to contact.”

UrsusArctos: It's interesting to hear all the "oohs" and "aahs" as they spy Sahaquiel with their little eyes. Sahaquiel continues the big, creepy eye-motif from Matarael although the big central eye really isn't functional (apart from having the core as the pupil).

113

HYUGA:“That's impressive.”

MISATO:“Now that's just ridiculous.”

UrsusArctos: The two comments neatly encapsulate the reactions to Sahaquiel's design. While the Angel is huge and the big central eye does add an intimidating, alien appearance, its overall design and colors make it look kind of cartoony, even childish. None of which detracts from the Angel's impressive power, as we'll see very shortly.

114

AOBA:“Closing on target.”

115

116

WOMAN (OFF):“Start search.”

MAN (OFF):“Data transmission commencing.”

117A

WOMAN (OFF):“Reception confirmed. Commencing analysis.”

UrsusArctos: This marks the first - but not the last - use of an offensive A.T. Field in the series. Sahaquiel is probably the largest Angel in terms of physical size, so the satellites it smashed must be correspondingly massive.

117B

MISATO:“Was that an AT Field?”

RITSUKO:“It's a new way of using it.”

117C

118

MISATO (OFF):“What incredibly destructive power.”

119

MISATO:“That's an AT Field!”

120

IBUKI:“It's using kinetic energy too. It's like this Angel is a bomb in and of itself.”

RITSUKO:“In any case, the first blast was way off and hit the Pacific.”

Frogatr: It's interesting that Ritsuko isn't wearing her usual lipstick. I wonder if that has anything to do with Commander Ikari being absent?

UrsusArctos: Possibly, possibly. She does wear her lipstick at Nerv in Episode 07 when Gendo is away, however.

121

RITSUKO (OFF):“And two hours later, the second shot struck there. Since then, it has been steadily adjusting for error.”

UrsusArctos: If Sahaquiel had decided to soften up Tokyo-3 before dropping from space, things could have gotten very unpleasant indeed. As it is, we don't hear about the Angel's orbital bombardment after this.

Dr. Nick: Setting aside the probable retcons relating to Angel motivations, Sahaquiel is rather unique personality-wise as it seemingly wishes to deny humanity access to a progenitor entity even at the cost of its own life. Assuming Gendo hasn't yet grafted the Adam embryo onto his hand and is keeping it in a safe in Tokyo-3 as an Angel bait, Sahaquiel could have theoretically vaporized Adam's body, Lilith's body and Lilith's soul container all at once.

Of course, in the very next episode Ireul tries to blow up the headquarters as well, but it's unclear to me whether that would've been a legit suicide attack.

122

MISATO:“That means it's learning.”

123

HYUGA (OFF):“N2 aerial mines had no effect on it either.”

TEXT:“Photo: Search Satellite 7 Maximum Magnification”

UrsusArctos: Prior to this, N2 weapons did something useful. But where Sachiel was forced to slow and regenerate and Israfel was KO'd for days, this new Angel is utterly immune. They've gone well past the reach of anything conventional, and stay that way.

124

AOBA:“The Angel's movements since then are unknown.”

UrsusArctos: Maybe they can't track it by radar, but surely something this humongous would be visible to telescopes (or even the naked eye!), or at least occult the stars as it went overhead?

125

MISATO:“It's probably coming here.”

RITSUKO:“Yes, and next time it'll drop itself.”

126

MISATO (OFF):“So, that will give us a third Ashinoko Lake?”

RITSUKO (OFF):“All five Fuji Lakes will be fused into a single body linked to the Pacific, taking Headquarters with it.”

127

MISATO:“What about Commander Ikari?”

AOBA:“We're unable to contact him due to the Angel's powerful jamming.”

128

MISATO:“What is the Magi's judgment?”

129

IBUKI:“They unanimously agree in recommending evacuation.”

RITSUKO:“What will you do?”

130

RITSUKO:“You're the one who's in charge now.”

MISATO:“Notify all of the Japanese government ministries. Under special declaration D-17, provided for under Nerv's authority,”

131

MISATO (OFF):“all residents within radius of 50km are to evacuate immediately. Ask Matsushiro to back up the Magi.”

HYUGA:“We're abandoning this location?”

MISATO:“No,”

132

MISATO:“but it's not necessary to place everyone at risk.”

133

ANNOUNCEMENT:“A D-17 Special Declaration has been made by the government.”

Mr. Tines: Is 17 the magic number here? (cf. A-17 in Episode 10 Cut 148.)

UrsusArctos: 17 in Evangelion seems to be the equivalent of 47 in Star Trek. Not counting the 17 Angels, I'm pretty sure that number turns up in at least two other instances in the show.

134

TEXT:“All Lanes Outgoing”

ANNOUNCEMENT:“All residents must evacuate to their designated locations.”

135-137

138

ANNOUNCEMENT:“Beginning with the 6th and 7th blocks,”

139

ANNOUNCEMENT:“move according to your district chief's direction immediately.”

140

ANNOUNCEMENT:“The evacuation of the city is complete.”

141

ANNOUNCEMENT:“In accordance with Department Alert C,”

142

ANNOUNCEMENT:“the evacuation of noncombatants and D class personnel has been completed.”

143

144

RITSUKO (OFF):“You're going to do this? Seriously?”

MISATO (OFF):“Yes, I am.”

145

RITSUKO:“You're going to throw away all three Evas with your selfish decision? The chance of success is only 0.00001%! That's not even one in ten thousand!”

UrsusArctos: You should say "That's one in ten million."

146

MISATO:“It's not zero. I'm just banking on the Evas.”

UrsusArctos: Simon from Gurren Lagann would approve!

Dr. Nick: At this point, Misato has seen enough of Yui's soul magic tricks to know these numbers tend to be meaningless.

147

RITSUKO:“Major Katsuragi!”

148

MISATO:“I am currently in charge.”

149

dzzthink: Is it madness or determination that's driving Misato's decisions? Some of the world's greatest ideas and actions are based on such thinking, where it's 'all or nothing'. Makes you wonder how they calculate their percentages. All miracles need a little faith and prayer.

150

MISATO:“I want to do whatever I can. Destroying Angels is my duty.”

RITSUKO:“Your duty? Don't make me laugh.”

151

RITSUKO:“This is for your own sake, isn't it? Your revenge against the Angels!”

UrsusArctos: Ritsuko may have Misato's motivations down pat, but it does raise the question of what other options Nerv has against an Angel that could blow up everything in a 50 kilometer radius!
