222

BGM Start: E-6 [ANGEL ATTACK]

The Angel approaching on the monitor!

SHINJI (OFF):“It's back again!”

223

The two in the entry plug. We can tell from the movement of her arms that she is operating the Eva.

ASUKA:“Hmph. I'll bring it down this time.”

SE <<Kachack-rrr>>

224

Unit-02, limp. Unmoving.
It is carried slowly along by the currents.

SE <<(Silence)>>

SEELE-01: I mean... Why couldn't it move? Water pressure? And why can it suddenly force the jaw open like nobody's business later on?

225

Asuka leans forward.

ASUKA:“W-what! It's not working!”

SHINJI:“It's using B-type equipment.”

UrsusArctos: Shinji confirms what the XO said earlier - B-type equipment doesn't work underwater. This is something you think Asuka ought to know about since she's been training with Eva-02 since well before Shinji got in Eva-01, but she neglects that basic operational fact. And then she has the gall to turn to Shinji for a solution to her blunder.

Kendrix: Asuka’s boldness may look cool when it works, but sometimes acting fast can leave you unprepared. Still, she does have 10 years of military training so expecting poor Shinji to have a solution after she bragged so much earlier & ignored all his appeals to caution. It’s not like he was tooting his own horn or claiming to be impressive. There’s some really nice freeze frames in here.

Panic.
Asuka loses confidence.

ASUKA:“What do we do!”

SHINJI:“What can we do...”

Asuka loses her temper with the weak-hearted Shinji.
She speaks huffily.

ASUKA:“This is pathetic. Considering you're the Third Children!”

SHINJI:“It's here!”

226

The Angel approaching, with the limp Unit-02 in the foreground.

SE <<GlubglubglubglubGLUBGLUB>>

Kendrix: The “hanging” pose very well accentuates the difficulty in moving.

UrsusArctos: Now that I look at it from this angle, it looks like a parody of a cowboy/gunslinger stand off from an old western, the sort with dialogue like "Reach for the sky. This town ain't big enough for the two of us..."

227

Unit-02 barely managing to lift its head.

228

The Angel's face separates into two parts, becoming a mouth. Inside the mouth is a shining sphere.

SE <<VWHOOOAR>>

UrsusArctos: The script description is odd, it reads to me like Gaghiel didn't have a mouth until it decided to give itself one on the fly to bite the Eva with. The teeth inside look to be arrayed in rows like a shark's teeth but appear to be conical in shape rather than serrated and triangular like in most carnivorous sharks.

229

The two inside the entry plug.
Asuka openly demonstrates a physical revulsion.

ASUKA:“A MOUTH!?”

SHINJI:“It's an Angel.”

Line: Beautiful and frightening mouth at the same time. I understand Asuka's repulsion. Who wouldn't be repulsed? So...This Angel wanted to eat them, I guess?...

Kendrix: I was hoping that those bubbles would be explicitly declared as tears, sweat or air. Also it took me forever to make the connection that Shinji’s line probably refers to the core becoming visible in its mouth. Of course, he’s seen weirder and grosser ones by now.

It’s certainly another very ‘dynamic’, expressive shot.

230

The Angel, with Unit-02 in the foreground.
The mouth advances until it fills up the entire screen!

SE <<VSHOOOAR>>

231

The Angel advances!
Unit-02 is snapped up by it!
(With half of its body outside)

SE <<Vwhooooar>>

UrsusArctos: Those jaws look like vegetable-cutting scissors from the side.

232

Asuka inside the cockpit.

BOTH:“Waaaaah — *shrieeek*

The two are thrown wildly about from side to side.
Shinji flies into Asuka's chest.

SHINJI:“Waaaaah —”

ASUKA:“*Screeeam*!”

233

The group looking beneath the surface of the water.
Toji gives his honest perspective.

SPEAKER (OFF):“Eva Unit-02 has entered the target's body.”

TOJI:“Doesn't that mean they've been eaten?”

UrsusArctos: Kensuke's finally keeping his eyes peeled for where the action really is. I like how they're all so focused searching for something that's too deep to be in sight.

234

The Angel moving through the water (in silhouette), with Eva's cable sticking out of its mouth.

SE <<Vwooooosh>>

235

Toji, murmuring, gives his honest impression.

TOJI:“It's just like fishing.”

Something strikes Misato.

MISATO:“Fishing? That's right, fishing!”

Toji is startled by her words (perhaps he said something he shouldn't have).

UrsusArctos: Be happy, Toji! You inspired Misato with her next wild idea for victory!

Kendrix: The time has come for another Wacky Misato Plan(TM)

236

Unit-02, caught in the Angel's mouth.
Its lower half dangles pathetically.

SE <<Voooosh>>

237

Shinji riding on Asuka.

SHINJI:“We're right back in a tight spot.”

ASUKA:“Shut up.”

The monitor shows the inside of the Angel's mouth.
Asuka, suddenly noticing Shinji against her chest, jerks him off of her.

ASUKA:“(She suddenly realizes)
Get off me already, you pervert!”

Shinji looks up at the monitor.

SHINJI:“But if we don't get free somehow —”

MISATO (OFF - RADIO):“Asuka, can you hear me?”

Asuka reacts to hearing Misato's voice on the radio.

Kendrix: Kudos to Shinji for keeping his eyes on the prize while fighting not just Gaghiel but his unruly co-pilot.

238

Misato shouting into the microphone.

MISATO:“DON'T LET GO OF IT, NO MATTER WHAT!!

BGM End: E-6 [ANGEL ATTACK]

239

The two blink.

SHINJI AND ASUKA:“Huh?”

Sailor Star Dust: This episode is seriously just too fun, despite the underlying character drama surrounding Adam.

UrsusArctos: Adam? Adam who? Adam West?!? Holy hot potatoes, Batman! Heh, the whole "something is seriously shady here" subtext just gets lost in the fun!

240

Misato faces the camera with a firm, businesslike expression, lowering the microphone.

MISATO (Turning around):“Captain.”

Kendrix: She’s just switched completely into Boss Mode.

241

The captain and first officer.

CAPTAIN:“What?”

242

Misato, resolved, with a serious expression.

MISATO:“I ask for your cooperation.”

243

The captain and first officer.

CAPTAIN AND FIRST OFFICER:“......”

244

Super telephoto, compressed perspective shot of the battleships.

— Pause —

CAPTAIN (OFF):“A point-blank assault by two of the surviving battleships!?”

UrsusArctos: The ADV dub goofs by rendering the line "A point blank assault by the two surviving battleships?" implying that these were the only two battleships that survived, which is clearly not true since we see one later. Naval nerd note - these Iowa-class battleships are missing their bow "Christmas tree" antennae, which all members of the class received in the 1980s. More on them in the next cut.
