The Moon Giant (月の巨人, tsuki no kyojin) is an unofficial name for the mysterious humanoid entity briefly glimpsed in the final scene of Evangelion 1.0: You Are (Not) Alone.

It is present at Nerv's 7th Branch in Mare Tranquilitatis, lying in a large excavation with scaffolding and long stairways constructed around it.[1] The giant's entire body is covered by a white "rubber cover"[2] with multiple dark seams, generally form-fitting but looser towards the lower body. The purple mask bearing "craters" and the mark of Seele closely resembles Lilith's from the original series, although two stylized "crying eyes" have been added. There is a large, IV-like structure that appears to be connected to the giant's left arm.

The morphology of the head and neck seems to resemble Lilith, although the more defined body, along with what appears to be a core visible beneath the fabric, is closer to an Evangelion. The markings on the arms are also visually identical to those associated with Eva "upkeep".

Speculation

Pending the official exposition, almost every conceivable possibility has been forwarded by fans in an attempt to explain the giant. A couple of the less outlandish speculations regarding its identity (often forwarded together):

  • Evangelion Unit-06: Or the Eva in an unfinished form, rather. It's known that, in the second movie, Eva-06 will descend from the Moon with its pilot, so the presence in the first film of Kaworu Nagisa and a mysterious giant at a lunar Nerv base seems a little suspect. The UCC Coffee campaign being launched for the second film is possibly hinting towards this one: Most of the cans are decorated with illustrations of the children with their respective Evas, but Kaworu is instead shown with the Moon Giant, which is labeled "Confidential". (See image.)
  • The Third Angel: The Rebuild continuity pushed Sachiel up to "Fourth Angel", while keeping Lilith at "Second", leaving a mysterious "Third Angel" unaccounted for. The unexplained giant on the Moon naturally piqued imaginations, combined with one of Kaworu's enigmatic lines during the final scene: After he rises from his "coffin" to face the giant, he says, "The Third again? You never change, do you?" Taken in the context of his other lines, he's referring to Shinji Ikari, but the visual context may have been designed to given the line a second possible meaning.

Notes

  1. The giant red streak present on the Moon's surface appears to be aligned with this excavation, although any possible significance remains unknown.
  2. A note on the layout drawing (published in Evangelion 1.0 Complete Records Collection) says, "The body is wrapped in a rubber cover." (身体はゴムカバーでおおわれている。)
