Creation

Eva-02 is the third Evangelion completed, the first "Production Model" Evangelion. Several mistakes made during the construction of Prototype Eva-00 and Test Type Eva-01 were refined in her design. The first Evangelion built specifically for combat, Eva-02 is a walking tank designed for battle against the Angels.

Purpose

Ostensibly, like all the Evangelions, Eva-02's stated purpose is to defend Tokyo-3 and the whole world from the Angel threat.

Abilities

In addition to incredible size and strength, Eva-02, like all Evangelions, possesses the ability to generate an A.T. Field. Eva-02 does not possess an [[S2 organ]], and relies on electrical power supplied via her Umbilical Cable and internal batteries.

Eva-02 possesses her own progressive knife, stored internally in her left shoulder pylon. This progressive knife is different from Eva-01's. Eva-01's progressive knife resembles a Bowie knife, while Eva 02's prog knife resembles a giant utility knife; it is capable of replacing the blade with a new one stored in the handle if the existing blade is damaged.

Eva-02 possesses an internal weapons rack of at least 8 missile-spikes in its right shoulder pylon, which can be fired with great force.

Armor Design

Eva-02 is a "Production Model" Evangelion and uses the same armor arrangement as the succeeding Eva-03 and Eva-04, and the repaired Eva-00. All Evangelions using this arrangement have five armor plates on their torso. The lowermost segment is elongated downwards to also cover the crotch, above this are two more segments, and all three wrap around the sides of the Eva's body to meet a vertical line of armor segments that cover the spine. The fourth segment from the bottom is the central chest plate, which is somewhat larger than the other segment, and instead of going around the back, terminates where the arm meets the bottom half of the shoulders.

Towards the end of this chest segment section on each side, near the shoulders, are small recessed cavities, painted an off-color from the majority of the armor. Above the central chest segment, the fifth and last armor segment is smaller than the rest and is essentially in the position of the collarbone. Above this, there is a throat-armor region which is not composed of segments like the rest and is colored purple in the Production Model (while light orange on Eva 01 and pink on the MP Evas). The throat region is covered with several sections of flexible material.

Soul

Eva-02's soul is that of Kyoko Zeppelin Soryu. For this reason her daughter, Asuka Langley Soryu was chosen as her pilot. Not all of Kyoko's soul was absorbed; the portion of her soul containing her maternal aspects was absorbed into the Eva. As a result, while Kyoko physically survived her "contact experiment" with Eva-02, she was driven clinically insane and had to be institutionalized, profoundly affecting her young daughter Asuka.

Also, even though Kyoko physically died after going insane, the maternal component of her soul continues to survive within Eva-02. It also seems likely that the remainder was salvaged into Eva-02 following the suicide, as well: in flashbacks to Episode 22 and Episode 25, we hear the insane Kyoko begging Asuka, "Please die with me!"

In the scene in Episode 25' where Asuka finds her mother within Eva-02, Kyoko repeats, "You mustn't die! You must live! You're alive!", several times. However, the familiar "Please die with me!" is mixed in twice among her inspirational words, thus strongly implying that the insane Kyoko and the maternal Kyoko were incorporated together.*
