Halo
"Making something... Nurturing something is really great. You can see and learn so many things from the process." |
A halo is a ring of energy that appears in association with (usu. directly above) Angels and Evangelions in the Rebuild continuity.
Some of the appearances seem arbitrary, but in general the halos accompany feats of levitation or other assisted movement, or moments when great innate power is unleashed.
- Adams: All possess halos at Second Impact.
- Third Angel: Uses halo to slice through the outer hull of Bethany Base, accompanied by levitation. (Angel is visibly "pulled" toward the halo.)
- Fourth Angel: Halo develops overhead as it prepares for a powered jump.
- Fifth Angel: Halo develops overhead as Angel rises into combat configuration.
- Sixth Angel: Halo appears overhead as Angel approaches center of Tokyo-3.
- Eighth Angel: Red halo forms above Angel after it finishes transforming, and multiple ones later when it attempts to "boost".
- Ninth Angel: Halo develops overhead as it prepares for a powered jump.
- Eva-01: Develops halo during "awakening".
- Eva-05: Develops halo upon self-destruct.
- Mark.06: Has halo over head while descending from Moon and toward Level EEE.
- Eva-08: Shown floating upside-down over a giant halo while "quickening".
The only Angels that have not displayed halos so far are the 7th (although the halo-like rings on its hips might quality) and the 10th.
In Neon Genesis Evangelion
The halo motif is put to limited use in the original series. Most notably, one forms over the head of Eva-00 as it transitions into a giant Rei, moments before self-destructing.
In tradition
Halos are a Christian visual motif associated with angels and holy figures (such as Jesus Christ). Before they were stylized into a floating ring, they appeared in art as a circular aura from behind.
