Misato Katsuragi (葛城ミサト) is a Captain, and later a Major, at Nerv. She is in command of Nerv HQ's Tactical Operations branch, responsible for coordinating the Evangelions in actual combat (as opposed to the Science Division, headed by Misato's longtime friend Dr. Ritsuko Akagi).

Past

Misato is the daughter of Dr. Katsuragi, who headed the Katsuragi Expedition. She is the sole survivor of the expedition, which was otherwise wiped out as a result of Second Impact. Misato has joined Nerv in order to avenge her father's death by destroying the Angels -- although she suspects the real reason is, cryptically, "I just want to get revenge on my father, so that I can free myself of him". [12]

Misato and Ryoji Kaji were lovers in college, although she eventually split up with him. The reason she provided was that she was seeing someone else, but, in actually, it was due to the realization that she found Kaji attractive because she saw her father in him. Misato was not psychologically able to deal with this epiphany at the time.

Tokyo-3

Misato is transfered to Tokyo-3 shortly before the Angels reappear. She takes Shinji Ikari, and later Asuka Langley Soryu, into her home. Not long after her arrival in Tokyo-3, Kaji is also stationed there and he is trying to re-kindle their relationship.

She has a pet "hot springs penguin" named Pen Pen.

Notes

• According to Misato's ID card, which she flashes in Episode 08, she is 1.63 meters tall (slightly over 5 feet 4 inches) and her blood type is AO (actually, both the genotype "AA" and "AO" are indistinguishable as the "type A" phenotype). However, the sections of the card listing her age and weight have been scribbled out (probably by Misato herself due to embarrassment).
• Misato only calls Kaji by his given name once, when she catches him sneaking into the LCL Plant.
