Seiyū Akira Ishida (Japanese)

Kaworu Nagisa is Fifth Child and a replacement Eva pilot sent to NERV HQ by SEELE, but who is in fact the 17th and final Angel, "Tabris"

Biology

Unlike Adam and all Angels born of her, Kaworu is a Lilim body with the soul of Adam, and there is no evidence that he is physically or biologically different from any other Lilim, except for the fact that he has Adam's DNA and is created out of Adam's body. It is mentioned during Second Impact that the genes inserted into Adam completed physical fusion, and the insertion of human genes into Adam's body is hinted to be the cause of his birth (His birthday is given to be September 13, 2000, the same day as the Second Impact). If the assumption that Kaworu is no different from a human (Lilim) holds, he has neither a core nor an S2 organ, but in the short time he is on-screen very little about him can be substantiated. Possessing the soul of Adam, he shares the First Angel's A.T. Field, which is by far the most powerful in existence and can levitate as an A.T. Field related ability.

Battle

Kaworu puppeted Eva 02 and headed directly down to Terminal Dogma with the captured Eva. Shinji was sent down to fight in Eva 01, fighting the commandeered Eva 02 with his progressive knife. After blocking out all communications with an A.T. Field barrier, Kaworu succeeded in reaching Terminal Dogma, only to discover that the giant crucified inside was not Adam, but Lilith. Eva 01 (With the probable assistance of Rei Ayanami) disabled Eva 02 and broke into Terminal Dogma. Kaworu accepted death and requested Shinji Ikari, the pilot, to kill him and let humanity live, a request that Shinji finally accepted.

Notes

  • The name "Nagisa" is a pun. The Kanji character "Nagisa" consists of the Katakana "shi" and the Kanji "sha", forming the word "Shisha", or "messenger". Kaworu, after all, is the final messenger, and the word used for "Angel" in the original Japanese dub is "Shito", or "Apostle" (messenger of God).
  • Kaworu, being the vessel for Adam's soul, is in effect Adam reborn as a human. By being both the First Angel (Adam, whose body was separated from her soul in Second Impact) and the seventeenth and final Angel, he is in effect both the first and the last of his kind.
    • Kaworu is "born from Adam", and describes Adam as being the "Mother of us all". Kaworu being the vessel for Adam's soul, that paradoxically makes him his own mother.
      • There has been some confusion as to whether Kaworu is truly an actual "Angel" given that he isn't so much "naturally occurring" as he is the result of the vessel for the soul of Adam. While Kaworu's exact nature is somewhat mysterious, he clearly identifies himself as both "an Angel" and "born of Adam".
  • It is heavily implied that Kaworu was created during Second Impact when human DNA fused with Adam, but it remains unknown whose DNA was used to create Kaworu's body. Since Kaworu Nagisa is Japanese name, the DNA donor was most likely a Japanese man - Dr. Katsuragi himself has been speculated to be the donor, but there never has been any official statement to this effect. How Kaworu came into being and how he was found by Seele remains unexplained.
  • The moment Kaworu opens the doors to Terminal Dogma is in synch with the music line "Und der Cherub steht vor Gott"- "And the Cherub(Angel) stood before God".
