Creation
Eva-01 is the second Evangelion completed, and although originally intended as a test-type model, like the prototype Eva-00 she was forced into combat against the Angels. Eva-01 was, in fact, the first to face combat.
Purpose
Ostensibly, like all the Evangelions, Eva-01's stated purpose is to defend Tokyo-3 and the whole world from the Angel threat. However, being created from Lilith unlike the other Evangelions, she appears to have been intended as a substitute for the real Lilith and so is of critical importance in Third Impact.
Abilities
In addition to incredible size and strength, Eva-01, like all Evangelions, possesses the ability to generate an A.T. Field. She does not possess an S² organ, and relies on electrical power supplied via her Umbilical Cable, and internal batteries, although she later acquires an S² organ from the Angel Zeruel.
Soul
Eva-01's soul is that of Yui Ikari. For this reason her son, Shinji Ikari was chosen as her pilot. Yui escaped into the Eva when she realized that Seele was catching on to her acting against their interests. Yui must also have realized early on that Eva-01 would end up fighting, or else her sacrifice would have been pointless.
