042

043

HIKARI (OFF):“Stand! Bow!”

044

TOJI:“Lunch time! Lunch time! This is the single best thing 'bout school.”

ASUKA (OFF):“What?!”

UrsusArctos: Toji, unsurprisingly, is a dude who loves his food! The jock who loves eating may be a very old cliche, but this moment adds considerably levity to a character who doesn't smile too often.

045

ASUKA:“You didn't bring lunch?”

SHINJI:“I didn't have time to cook last night because of homework.”

046

ASUKA:“And so you're telling me to go without lunch?!”

047

TOJI:“What's this? Married couple fightin' again?”

UrsusArctos: Enough folks use this quote as an excuse that Shinji and Asuka are or at least should be a romantic couple, but a couple of episodes later it sure ain't so clear-cut, and as we'll see Toji isn't the best observer in the romance department...

048

SHINJI & ASUKA:“It's not like that!”

UrsusArctos: Off-model is hilariously off by the end of this sequence. This is straight out of a romantic comedy, but trying to argue that Shinji and Asuka are unambiguously a couple (as opposed to merely shipping them together as a personal preference) on the basis of this scene is to forget just how broken, violent and dysfunctional their relationship becomes towards the end. More on that when we get to it.

049

MISATO (OFF):“What's all this formality for?”

050

051

RITSUKO:“It's the Unit 03 activation test at Matsushiro. We'll be using the fourth as the pilot.”

052

MISATO:“The fourth? The Fourth Child's been found?”

053

RITSUKO:“Just yesterday.”

054

MISATO:“But I haven't received a report from the Marduk Institute.”

055

RITSUKO:“The official documents will be delivered tomorrow.”

056

057

MISATO (OFF):“Dr. Akagi, aren't you hiding something from me again?”

RITSUKO (OFF):“Not really.”

UrsusArctos: Ritsuko's hiding more from you than you know at this point, and I don't mean the Marduk Institute being a sham.

058

MISATO:“Well, okay. So, who's”

059

MISATO:“the selected kid?”

060

MISATO (OFF):“Of all the people, it's that child?”

RITSUKO (OFF):“It can't be helped. All the candidates were gathered together for protection.”

MISATO (OFF):“It'll be hard to break to them.”

UrsusArctos: Ritsuko's actually telling the truth about the candidates being gathered together for their protection, but it'll take Kaji's revelation to make the situation perfectly clear to Misato.

061

MISATO (OFF):“Asuka will be fine. Her pride's riding on her piloting of the Eva. And Rei is an exception, but nothing good comes of becoming involved with us and the Evas.”

Dr. Nick: Again, this line would hit harder if Toji's mom wasn't pre-stuffed in the core.

062

MISATO (OFF):“Shinji understands that better than anybody. I don't want him to suffer”

063

MISATO (OFF):“any more hardships.”

RITSUKO:“But we need children of this kind,”

064

RITSUKO (OFF):“in order for us all to survive.”

MISATO:“Let go of the pure ideals, is that what you're saying?”

UrsusArctos: Given what they intend to do with the Evas once the Angels are destroyed - which Misato wondered about in the previous episode - this is one of the most pernicious half-truths in the series.

Dr. Nick: Back in the earlier days of the fandom, Ritsuko's line here was used as evidence for the fan theory that there's indeed something special about children born after the Second Impact. Or can you even call it a fan theory, if it's just swallowing an in-universe cover story hook, line and sinker?

I mean, technically she's being truthful - "children of this kind" just happens to mean children with core-fridged mommies, nothing more, nothing less.

065

066

067

HIKARI:“Suzuhara, you're on duty this week, so get to it!”

UrsusArctos: The scene cuts to the face of the person who has been chosen as the Fourth Children - and of course this will become obvious to everyone except Shinji.

068

TOJI What do you mean?

HIKARI:“The printout!”

069

HIKARI:“Didn't our teacher tell you to deliver this?”

TEXT:“Emergency Evacuation Training Enforcement Notice”

070

TOJI:“C'mon, class rep, you can ask the other person on duty.”

HIKARI:“Miss Ayanami is absent today!”

TOJI:“It's Ayanami and me? Can't be helped then.”

071

TOJI (OFF):“But I can't exactly go to a girl's place alone.”

HIKARI:“Well, in that case, I'll go along...”

TOJI (OFF):“Shinji!”

UrsusArctos: The transition from scowling class representative to delighted girl happens so quickly that it's a genuine surprise. Hikari is rarely seen smiling in the presence of Asuka, and much less so in the presence of any of the three stooges!

dzzthink: To be honest, it was quite bemusing to find Hikari suddenly liking Toji. It was a sharp contrast to her usual attitude as the strict class representative. Draws an interesting parallel with Misato and Asuka who hide or deny their feelings. Hikari does this too but opens up to Toji by preparing meals for him.

072

073

TOJI (OFF):“Walk home with me, will ya?”

074

075

UrsusArctos: This cut is the culmination of all the cuts before that show how oblivious Toji is to Hikari's feelings.
