Summary
Following the destruction of Bardiel/Eva-03 and the murder of Toji Suzuhara, Shinji Ikari resigns from Nerv as pilot of Eva-01 and decides to go back to his teacher's place. However, just as soon Shinji is at the train station, warnings emerge of a new Angel is approaching.
The new Angel is one of the most strongest Nerv has ever encountered and battled-Zeruel- the 14th Angel. With ease, Zeruel breaks through 18 of the 22 armor plates that protect the GeoFront. Because of such a rapid attack from Zeruel, Nerv has no choice but to battle the Angel in the GeoFront. With Shinji Ikari gone, and Eva-00 still in repair status, Evangelion Unit 02 is the only operational Evangelion able to battle the powerful Angel. Meanwhile back in Nerv HQ, Rei Ayanami fails to synchronize with Eva-01, and she chooses to pilot in her still damaged Evangelion, instead.
Asuka in Eva-02 was deployed with a full arsenal of weapons in the GeoFront; commencing her attack with a single Pallet Rile, which failed to neutralize the powerful A.T Field deployed by Zeruel. As Asuka's twin Pallet Rifles' failed to neutralize the Angel's A.T Field, Asuka is forced to use Hand Bazookas, which also failed miserably. Afterwards, Zeruel deploys its pair of razor sharp ribbons, which easily slices through Eva-02's armor, and amputates each of her arms. Groaning with pain, Asuka eventually charges towards the Angel, ending in only more destruction as Eva-02's head is cut off.
Meanwhile, Shinji meets up with Kaji, who eventually explains his past and brief relationship with Misato. This scene was never incorporated into Episode 19, but the scene gives a good indication of how Misato met Kaji and his past. Afterwards, Kaji manages to persuade Shinji to pilot the Eva again, and Shinji hurriedly runs towards Nerv HQ, right after Rei in Eva-00 managed to detonate an N2 bomb at Zeruel, to no effect. Shinji manages to get into the Eva quick enough so that he could thwart Zeruel's attack on Nerv HQ and out into the GeoFront. Desperately, Shinji manages to get the upper hand of the battle until his Eva's internal battery power runs out.
With her internal batteries depleted, Eva-01 is mercilessly suffering from Zeruel's torture until Eva-01 goes berserk once again. Eva-01 manages to kill the crippled Angel, and devours it, near its face. With an S2 engine, Eva-01 is able to activate without an external power source, essentially becoming a living god.
With Eva-01 on the loose, Nerv was forced to use its "Angel-trapping" cables to try to restraint Eva-01 to success. The following scenes practically follow the anime's plot, and Shinji is eventually back in Nerv's hands. Near the end of the Volume, we get a glimpse of Kaworu Nagisa, in his tube, smiling at Keel Lorenz while he talks.

Notes
- During the berserker scene of Volume 7, Eva-01 was seen devouring the upper part of Zeruel's torso, presumably the "facial" area. This is probably where the S2 Engine was located, and a direct link to this power source was the answer to Zeruel's immense strength and power.
Analysis
- According to the scene from Kaji's point of view, back in 2000, the world was in terrible turmoil. Wars raged, and starvation, disease and homelessness continued to ravage the already torn world. Kaji was apparently at age 10 during this tragedy, and so was located in overcrowded buildings that had little law and order. Kaji had a few friends, including his brother, and they managed to escape the building and live in the uncontrolled areas of Japan. The group of escapees had no choice but to steal food, and when it was Kaji's turn to steal, he was caught by some of the guards dispatched in the area. Almost beaten to death, he was forced to blurt out the location of their secret hideout, and the guards stormed the hideout and murdered every one of Kaji's friends and brothers. This scene in the manga was never included in the anime series.
