The United Nations features in Neon Genesis Evangelion but its powers and functioning appear to be significantly different and expanded from its real-life counterpart. Many of the details regarding the functioning of the UN within the universe of Neon Genesis Evangelion are not made explicit, and must be extrapolated from supplemental sources such as the Classified Information in addition to those inferred within the show itself.

Nerv ostensibly functions as a special agency under the UN. The Human Instrumentality Committee, although formed of high-ranking Seele members, is ostensibly a small council within the United Nations. Although it is evident on numerous occasions that Seele has great influence within the UN, the full extent and nature of the relationship between both organizations is never made explicit.

Unlike in the real world, the UN in Evangelion appears to hold direct control over military forces. The fleet seen in Episode 08 is referred to as though it was under direct UN control rather than, as in real life, being a collection of vessels from the individual member nations' navies.

A newspaper from 2002, seen in Episode 21, announces "UN moves headquarters to Japan in 5 years: Candidate City is Tokyo-2." Thus, it would seem that due to the chaos caused by Second Impact, UN headquarters was moved from New York City to Tokyo-2. ^{[Source needed]}
