TEXT:“Year 2015”

347

348

KAJI:“Now, I guess I'll go.”

261

262

FUYUTSUKI:“Oh, it's you.”

263

KAJI:“Long time no see.”

UrsusArctos: Unlike what the Division 2 agent said in Cut 006, the meeting between Kaji and Fuyutsuki comes off as unexpected, which wouldn't be the case if Kaji himself had been involved.

264

KAJI:“I've put the guards outside to sleep for a while.”

FUYUTSUKI:“This will cost you your life.”

KAJI:“I just want to get closer to the truth”

UrsusArctos: This scene shows that Fuyutsuki and Kaji have a lot in common in their search for the truth, but also a key difference: Fuyutsuki values his life and would know the truth to make the world better, while Kaji's obsession with the truth is a essentially a selfish one. Seele probably had something unpleasant planned for Fuyutsuki to squeeze information from him if he didn't cooperate enough, and we never get to learn how much Seele learnt by kidnapping and interrogating him or how much time actually passed in that cell.

264-1

KAJI:“within myself.”

349

KAJI:“Besides, it looks like they'll find out that I diverted the sample of Adam to Commander Ikari, so I have to guard my own interests too, or various bad things will happen.”

Dr. Nick: Another rare instance of Engrish (lebel).

UrsusArctos: On a rewatch, Kaji's words make me wonder if he chose to walk to his death on purpose, rather than presumably be captured by Division 2 and have the truth wrung out of him. That makes his death a deliberate sacrifice to prevent Seele from confirming that he'd diverted Adam to Gendo, while passing the torch to Misato.

265-266

267

268

MAN:“Thank you very much for your cooperation.”

269

MISATO:“Is it over?”

270

MAN:“Yes, the problem has been resolved, so...”

271

MISATO:“I see. What about him?”

thewayneiac: ADV originally mistranslated this line as "Where is he?", contributing to the absurd "Misato shot Kaji" theory. The fanbase interpreted it as meaning "Where do I go to kill him?" "Kare wa?" can mean "where is he?" under the proper circumstances, but this aint them.

272

MAN:“I do not know.”

UrsusArctos: He might be telling the truth. If the plan had been to get rid of Kaji and "bust out" Fuyutsuki, Kaji's own rescue put an end to it.

273

274

275

276

277

KAJI:“Hey, you're late.”

278

Dr. Nick: So, who killed Kaji? Apparently, just some random Nerv/Seele goon. The "Misato did it" theory was such a stupid early fandom dead end that even the creators themselves took action to kneecap it, as seen in the next cut.

UrsusArctos: No, it was sneaky Sarai all along, damn them! Ancient jokes aside, having Kaji killed by a random goon would make Kaji's death resonate with Misato's death in EoE, also killed by a random goon. Sadamoto's manga, which is his own canon, seems to finger Gendo himself. The events of this episode make Sadamoto's headcanon rather ridiculous, since it's clear that the murderer is acting under orders from Seele to threaten Gendo into obedience.

279

Mr. Tines: One of the few places where something was removed in the DC version presented here (a view of the name plate on the apartment door)

UrsusArctos: Possibly to remove the implication that Misato killed Kaji, one of the few theories about Evangelion that Anno ever explicitly disconfirmed.

280

MISATO (OFF):“I'm home.”

KAJI (ANSWERING MACHINE):“Katsuragi, it's me. I've probably put you through a lot of trouble by the time you're listening to this. I'm sorry. Tell Ritchan I said I'm sorry too. Also, since I've troubled you so much anyway, there's this flower I've been growing... It'd make me happy if you'd water it for me. Shinji knows where it is. Katsuragi, the truth is with you. Go forward without any hesitation.”

Dr. Nick: Kaji at least had the final luxury of leaving this message. Yui couldn't do anything like that because she couldn't draw any suspicion to her deadly accident potentially being no accident at all.

Also, why is Kaji referring to his melons as a flower? Is it just supposed to be a cute surprise for Misato when she finds the place, or am I missing something?

UrsusArctos: Maybe he thought "flower" sounded more romantic and appropriate for his final message? "There's this watermelon patch I've been growing" would probably sound too ridiculous to take seriously for such a tragic sendoff.

295

KAJI (ANSWERING MACHINE):“If I ever get to see you again,”

296

KAJI (ANSWERING MACHINE):“I'll say the words I wasn't able to say eight years ago. Bye.”

297

ANSWERING MACHINE:“Message recorded at 12:02pm.”

298

MISATO:“Jerk...”

299

MISATO:“You're really such a jerk...”

300

301

302

303

SHINJI (MONO):“Right then, all I could do was run away from Misato.”

304

SHINJI (MONO):“There was nothing I could do or say. I was a child. It made me realize that.”
