153

SHINJI:“I thought you'd be a more serious person, Mr. Kaji.”

KAJI:“Once you're comfortable around someone, you sure don't hold back, Shinji Ikari.”

SHINJI:“I'm sorry.”

KAJI:“No, I'm sorry too. I didn't mean to sound sarcastic. I know! I'll show you something neat.”

UrsusArctos: Well, he did take Shinji out for tea after all - and in a good way too. It's a shame that Shinji didn't learn more from him about life (not about flirtation, though, ugh).

154

SHINJI:“Are they watermelons?”

155

KAJI:“Yeah, aren't they cute? This is my hobby. It's a secret from everybody else, though.”

156

KAJI:“Making something... Nurturing something is really great. You can see and learn so many things from the process.”

157

KAJI:“Like what's enjoyable.”

158

SHINJI:“And about suffering too, right?”

159

KAJI (OFF):“Do you hate suffering?”

SHINJI (OFF):“I don't like it.”

KAJI (OFF):“Have you found anything that you enjoy?”

dzzthink: In the context of the NGE and Rebuild series, this scene is very significant. Kaji is telling Shinji there is more to life than piloting an Eva, and that his simple act of nurturing watermelons can bring him great peace. It is a moment of pure serenity and calm before being broken by the complications of work and relationships when Misato rings in.

160

161

KAJI:“That's fine too. But knowledge of suffering makes you all the more capable of kindness to others. Because that's different from being weak.”

KAJI:“Yes? Hello? It's Katsuragi. She says they're starting the synch test.”

UrsusArctos: This entire scene reveals a far kinder and more understanding personality than the shameless lech seen previously. Like I said before, it's a shame Kaji didn't get to talk to Shinji prior to this.

162

RITSUKO:“I thought so.”

WOMAN (OFF):“Fix the depth at 3.2.”

163

RITSUKO (OFF):“Shinji's synch rate is dropping.”

WOMAN (OFF):“LCL thickness is nominal. Harmonics level is negative 1.1 ...”

164

MISATO:“What's that mean?”

RITSUKO:“I can't say.”

WOMAN (OFF):“0.5...”

165

RITSUKO:“But something must have happened during that incident.”

WOMAN (OFF):“0.9... 0.10...”

166

RITSUKO:“Something psychological.”

MISATO:“This makes it even harder to tell him about Unit 03's pilot.”

WOMAN (OFF):“Current exponent is 0.9.”

WOMAN (OFF):“All results posted to Melchior.”

167

RITSUKO (OFF):“But the pilot will be officially informed tomorrow.”
