OLD TEACHER:“Well,”

TEXT:“Next Day”

252

OLD TEACHER:“let me call the girl's roll. Ayanami... Oh, Ayanami's”

253

OLD TEACHER:“absent again?”

UrsusArctos: Shinji takes on a typical Rei pose and Asuka takes on a Gendo pose.

256

Dr. Nick: So, why is Rei in this tube? Is it clone body maintenance to keep her from messily disintegrating as seen in the very beginning of ep. 26'?

262

Frogatr: The fine is in dollars here and not yen. How odd.

UrsusArctos: Although the out-of-universe explanation is that they just copied the entire warning from an English-language warning sign in the US, I don't know what an in-universe explanation would be for that. Perhaps dollars are being used here due to this being, technically, a U.N. facility? A hidden comment by the show's creators on the perceived American dominance over Japan?

267

KAJI:“Hi, how's your hangover?”

MISATO:“I'm finally sober now, thanks.”

KAJI:“Glad to hear it.”

268

MISATO:“Is this your day job, or your side job?”

KAJI:“I wonder which?”

MISATO:“Ryoji Kaji of Special Duty Organization Nerv's Special Inspection Department... Also, Ryoji Kaji of the Investigation Department of the Japanese Ministry of Home Affairs.”

KAJI:“So you know all about it.”

MISATO:“Don't underestimate Nerv.”

KAJI:“Is this an order from Commander Ikari?”

MISATO:“My own discretion. If you keep doing this other job, you'll die.”

thewayneiac: I think it's quite possible that Ritsuko ratted him out to Misato, for his own good, of course.

269

KAJI:“Commander Ikari is using me. I can still keep going. However, I will apologize for hiding it from you.”

MISATO (OFF):“I'll call it even in thanks for yesterday.”

KAJI:“Thanks very much, but...”

UrsusArctos: Kaji's no fool when it comes to how he's being used. Gendo and Fuyutsuki knew what he was up to in the helicopter ride, and he seems to know well how far he can put himself at risk.

270

KAJI (OFF):“The Commander and Ritchan are hiding things from you too,”

271

KAJI (OFF):“and...”

272

273

KAJI (OFF):“This is it.”

274

275

MISATO:“This is...”

UrsusArctos: The static images here don't convey how effective Misato's look of shock is before we see what shocked her. Kaji doesn't respond; he seems to have become inured to the thing in front of him.

276

UrsusArctos: Behold the crucified Lilith. These shots have been brought up by some folks as among some of the most shocking and disturbing in Evangelion - and obvious religious reference aside, this is not something a first-time viewer could expect from this episode.

277

UrsusArctos: This shot of the Spear of Longinus being driven through Lilith's chest shows her with visible nipples, which I don't recall seeing anywhere else prior to End of Evangelion.

278

MISATO (OFF):“Eva?”

UrsusArctos: The set of tubes going out of the back of Lilith's head and neck, Ghost in the Shell style, are likely collection tubes for LCL. (Curious to see if the script has something to say about them)

279

MISATO:“No!”

UrsusArctos: "No" is the correct answer, ironically, but Misato doesn't realize that. Adam's "Giant of Light" form strongly resembles an Evangelion but is just fuzzy enough to induce doubt. Given that viewers last saw Adam as an embryo and heard Gendo and Fuyutsuki making cryptic comments about "Adam", this particular bit of misdirection is convincing (unless you know better, at which point it falls apart easily).

280

MISATO:“Impossible...”

281

KAJI (OFF):“Yes, this is the origin and linchpin of everything since the Second Impact. This is Adam.”

MISATO (OFF):“Adam? The First Angel is here?”

UrsusArctos: It's still a matter of debate whether Kaji deliberately lied to Misato about Lilith's identity, or if he genuinely thought (at this point, anyway) that Gendo had grown the embryo he delivered in Episode 08 into a giant. Either way, there are enough red herrings in place to deceive first-time watchers about which Angel they're looking at.

Dr. Nick: Remembering the ending of the previous episode, a first-time viewer is let to believe Rei stuck the Spear of Longinus into tiny embryo Adam to accelerate its growth, and the small dangling legs seen here are a result of this growth spurt. In reality, Lilith's always been a giant, and her lower half is missing because Eva-01 was frankensteined out of it. This ridiculous-sounding science project is actually shown in the series, as a blink-and-you'll-miss-it still image in episode 23.

282

MISATO (OFF):“You're right. Nerv is deeper in this”

283

284

MISATO:“than I thought.”

UrsusArctos: Eight episodes late, the penny finally drops.
