259

Dr. Nick: Why is Ritsuko naked here? The implications are extremely dark.

260

KEEL:“We would like for things to proceed smoothly. We do not wish to subject you to any more degradation and suffering.”

RITSUKO:“I do not feel humiliated whatsoever.”

?? (OFF):“A strong-willed woman. I can understand why Ikari would want you by his side.”

?? (OFF):“But the person who handed you to us”

261

?? (OFF):“is none other than Ikari.”

262

KEEL:“He refused to hand over the pilot of Unit 00 for questioning. He sent you as a substitute, Dr. Akagi.”

263

RITSUKO (MONO):“I was sent in place of Rei?”

UrsusArctos: For Seele's entire abominable interrogation to succeed, it required (1) Ritsuko not to know that Gendo sent her, (2) Ritsuko to be exceptionally resentful of Rei and (3) Ritsuko to believe that Kiel was telling the truth. More in the additional comments.
Additional Commentary

UrsusArctos: The first part would be achieved if Ritsuko were summoned by Section Two agents in the same manner that they visited Misato in Episode 21. Given that Section Two is demonstrably rife with Seele agents, it makes sense that she was summoned without being told of the fact that Gendo had let Seele interrogate her.

The second part seems to be because Kiel lucked out. Gendo himself doesn't know that Ritsuko is resentful of Rei, and it's clear that Seele don't know much about Rei herself or this would be a very different conversation. The relationship between Gendo and Ritsuko would be far easier to put together, and it makes sense that they'd try to drive a wedge in that particular relationship to teach Gendo a lesson.

What beats me is the last part. If Ritsuko knew that Seele knew about their relationship - "I can see why Ikari would want you by his side" is as close to "I know of your relationship with Ikari" as is possible for a Seele member - how did she never think of the possibility that they were lying, trying to attack her mentally the way they're implied to have done so physically? It's because Ritsuko has convinced herself that Rei is being groomed as a substitute for her, and Kiel exposed Ritsuko to one of her worst possible fears at a moment of deep vulnerability. She doesn't even stop to think that it might be a cunning lie. While it's possible that Kiel has a strong perverse intuition about these things (and has convinced himself that Gendo is protecting Rei out of perverted lust rather than entirely different reasons), it's perfectly possible that he was subjecting Ritsuko to a prolonged mental attack on multiple fronts and simply got lucky.

264

TEXT:“Sorry, but don't bother me. Working”

265

KAJI (VOICE RECORDING):“This is a part of the truth that you wanted.”

266

KAJI (VOICE RECORDING):“I devised thirty-six other ways to send it to you, but you probably won't get them. The only definite one is this capsule.”

dzzthink: How many beers has Misato drunk in this episode?

UrsusArctos: She's caffeinated, not intoxicated - those are UCC Coffee cans. UCC has since released tie-in coffee cans featuring Evangelion characters.

267

KAJI (VOICE RECORDING):“This is everything I have to offer. Do with it as you see fit.”

268

KAJI (VOICE RECORDING):“The password is our very first memory together. Bye, take care.”

269

270

MISATO:“The phone that won't ring, I won't let it irritate me anymore.”

271

272

MISATO:“Because I've accepted your feelings.”

Dr. Nick: Misato has fully inherited Kaji's "truth at all costs" attitude.

273

274

?? (OFF):“Are we certain we did the right thing concerning Dr. Akagi?”

?? (OFF):“She is different from Fuyutsuki. Returning her is in our best interest.”

?? (OFF):“She has rendered distinguishing service to the Eva series. She can be of some use to us right now.”

?? (OFF):“Indeed, for the sake of mankind's future.”

UrsusArctos: The original version of this scene had Ritsuko with a flat expression but the DC version added a number of small facial movements. It helps show that this is someone barely restraining an enormous amount of emotional distress.

275

KEEL:“The annihilation of New Tokyo-3 will be good material upon which to advance our plans. Hurry their completion.”

??:“Eight Evangelions are already being prepared.”

??:“Which leaves four more.”

UrsusArctos: Although the committee talks of 12 Mass Production Evas in total, we only get 9 in End of Evangelion.

276

KEEL:“That will be our promised day.”

277

SHINJI (OFF):“Yes, hello?”

278

RITSUKO (PHONE - OFF):“Just listen to me. I've released the restraints placed on you. You should be able to go outside now.”

SHINJI:“Miss Ritsuko?”

279

280

UrsusArctos: The sign calls this "Terminal Dogma Level 1 Sector 2" and is otherwise identical to the sign outside Lilith's chamber in Cut 262 of Episode 15.

281

UrsusArctos: This is a straight reuse of the corresponding Episode 15 shot where Kaji swipes the keycard to Lilith's chamber although this results in a goof - they forgot to change the "CL3" designation for "Circulating Line 3" (the cover name for Lilith's chamber) with the name for this section here.

282

MISATO (OFF):“It's no use, not without my pass.”

UrsusArctos: Unless I'm mistaken, this shot was redrawn for the DC episodes, and the look on Ritsuko's face is the almost the same as when Casper betrays her in End of Evangelion.

283

RITSUKO:“I see. It's Kaji's handiwork, isn't it?”

UrsusArctos: Misato's really made a bad habit of pointing guns at old friends, although I wonder why she sticks it in Ritsuko's back instead of aiming for the head like she did with Kaji.

284

MISATO:“You're going to let me see the secret in there with my own eyes.”

285

RITSUKO:“Fine, but he's coming too.”

286

UrsusArctos: This is practically comic-book framing right here - how else would Misato not have noticed Shinji while waiting to get the jump on Ritsuko?

287

MISATO:“Fine.”
