Metaphysical Biology

Metaphysical Biology (or "meta-biology") is the branch of science which Yui Ikari, Gendo Ikari, and Kozo Fuyutsuki specialized in while at the University of Kyoto. Metaphysical Biology is one of the fundamental principles on which the technology to create Evangelions is based.

The exact nature of the field is unexplained, but apparently it is directly involved in the technology which allows a human soul to be carried within an Evangelion.

Notes

• There is of course, no real-world science known as "Metaphysical Biology". Metaphysical Biology is never clearly explained during the series, and is really only briefly hinted at and alluded to as the science on which is based the "soul manipulation" (for lack of a better term), that is involved in the creation of the Evangelions, the creating of the Dummy Plug system, and probably how the Rei Ayanami series of clones serve as the "vessel" for the soul of Lilith while Kaworu Nagisa serves as the "vessel" for the soul of Adam. Essentially, Metaphysical Biology is the "magic wand" of the series, serving as as a catch-all explanation for how Nerv is able to manipulate souls using their scientific experiments, without actually giving any sort of real "answers".
