| There's no telling whether she was doing it conciously, but she seems to be reciprocating his spontaneous worry over her from ep 01. This time, their roles are reversed and Rei is the 'protector' while Shinji is the fragile one. These roles will get turned around again and again, so from the very begining, the S/R relationship has been balanced. Neither has a dominant personality that would smother/intimidate a less dominant person, and neither would think him/herself higher than the other, in sharp contrast to the A/S relationship where one of the partners (Asuka) is clearly the dominant one. (Of course, Shinji and Rei are not perfect either, and a bit of dominantness and self-confidence wouldn't harm either of them, but that's another story.)
