Cross shaped explosion
Cross shaped explosions occur several times throughout the Neon Genesis Evangelion TV Series and Movies. Visually, they are a direct link to the religious motif, eventhough they are realistically impossible, perhaps to further indicate that these kinds of explosions are not of conventional means. Most of these explosions are produced by the Angels themselves, although Evangelion Unit-01 and Evangelion Unit-02 has also produced them on extraordinary circumstances.
Episode 02
In Episode 02, Sachiel's eye beam attack against Eva-01 produced a horizontal cross shaped explosion. This is different than the other explosions in that it is perpendicular to the land instead of rising into the air.
Later in the same episode, when Sachiel envelopes Eva-01 and explodes, the ensuing explosion is also cross shaped.
Episode 19
In Episode 19, Zeruel's attack causes a cross shaped explosion. Unlike the eye beam used by Sachiel, Zeruel's eye beam attack results simply in an explosion instead of an actual beam spanning from the eyes to the target.
Episode 25'
In Episode 25', after Evangelion Unit-02 reactivates under the lake in the Geofront, a cross shaped explosion appears.
At the end of the first half of the movie, Shinji is finally able to reach Eva-01's Entry Plug and uses a cross shaped exposion to break out of the Nerv pyramid and escape out of the Geofront. This explosion can be seen dissipating and turning into what looks like a pair of wings.
