The cross (十字架, juujika) is one of the more abused religious references present in Neon Genesis Evangelion.

The creators themselves admitted into using the emblems of Christianity simply because they "looked cool."

There are 4 types of crosses used in Evangelion:

I. Greek cross

II. Christian cross

III. Inverted Christian cross

IV. Tau cross

(four images from the show here for each type of cross)

Some of the forms it takes, often in lieu with the crucifixion motif:

List of Appearences

In N.G.E.TV:

  • Cross-shaped explosions (Sachiel, Zeruel, Eva-01, Eva-02)
  • Episode 1: Inverted cross-shaped explosions (Sachiel)
  • Episode 12: Dr. Katsuragi's / Misato Katsuragi's pendant (Greek cross)
    • This object is effectively "crucified" at the end of the show
  • Episode 16: An actual crucifix on top of a church is seen when preparing for the last attempt to destroy the Angel Leliel, which might sacrifice Shinji Ikari in the process
  • Episode 18: Eva-03 is carried on a cross-shaped red scaffolding
  • Episode 22: An actual crucifix is on top of the church next to the graveyard where Kyoko Zeppelin Soryu is being buried in Episode 22.
  • Episode 21: Architecture/composition forms a cross behind Kaji where he is shot
  • Episode 21: Shadow making it appear Gendo Ikari is carrying a cross when he speaks about evolving humanity to godhood.
  • Cross-shaped depression where Evangelion Unit-01 was "born" (where Lilith is also "crucified")
  • Episode 23: "Double cross" configuration of Eva graveyard
  • Episode ?: Lilith's red cross (upon which Lilith was crucified)

In End of Evangelion:

  • Cross-shaped configuration of Eva-01's four wings
  • Eva-01 is "crucified" by the Eva Series
  • Tree of Life is effectively cross-shaped
  • Eva Series crucify themselves
  • Architecture/composition forms a cross above the door Misato is heading for when she gets shot
  • The souls of disembodied humans are "launched" into the air by green crosses of light
  • Eva-01 departs for outer space holding herself in the "crucifix" position

Notes

  • A "crucifix" refers to a cross symbol that has a figure of Jesus' crucified body on it. The basic shape that appears without a figure should properly speaking just be referred to as a "cross", not a "crucifix".
