Kyoko Zeppelin Soryu was the mother of Asuka Langley Soryu. A brilliant scientist involved in the Evangelion Project at GEHIRN's German branch. However, she was involved in a "contact experiment" with Eva Unit 02 which trapped the part of her soul containing her maternal aspects inside of the Evangelion, driving her clinically insane in the process. She was institutionalized and began behaving as if a doll she possessed was really her daughter, and totally ignored Asuka. Ultimately, Kyoko committed suicide by hanging herself and the doll-Asuka.

However, the maternal parts of Kyoko's soul, at the very least (see note below), continued to survive in Eva 02, always watching over her daughter in battle, which Asuka realized during The End of Evangelion.

Note:

In a flashback in ep. 25, we hear insane Kyoko begging Asuka "Please die with me". In the scene in The End of Evangelion where Asuka finds her mother in Unit-02, Kyoko repeats, "You mustn't die! You must live! You're alive!", several times. But mixed in with these lines is "Die with me." This makes it seem likely that after her death the rest of Kyoko's soul was salvaged into Unit-02 as well.
