If this page is for anime and manga only...

...Where shall I put references found in live-action movies, non-Japanese comics, etc? --Dr. Nick 14:38, 10 October 2007 (PDT)

Such as?--V 18:42, 10 October 2007 (PDT)
For example, MP Evas in One Hour Photo, other Eva "cameos" in X-Men comics, Invader Zim, animated Justice League series... --Dr. Nick 02:44, 11 October 2007 (PDT)
Maybe the title should be changed to "Tributes to Neon Genesis Evangelion in other Shows and Manga"? --Ornette 01:01, 13 October 2007 (PDT)
I'm thinking "Tributes to Neon Genesis Evangelion in Other Media" sounds less clunky. Incisivis 09:53, 13 October 2007 (PDT)
Four separate pages are probably required:
  • Tributes to other anime and manga in Neon Genesis Evangelion
  • Tributes to other media in Neon Genesis Evangelion
  • Tributes to Neon Genesis Evangelion in other anime and manga
  • Tributes to Neon Genesis Evangelion in other media
"Anime" and "manga" in the heading should probably not be capitalized, BTW. --Dr. Nick 10:12, 13 October 2007 (PDT)
Guys, I've already got some material for non-Japanese NGE references. So are we going ahead with creating a separate page for them, or changing the nature of this one? Incisivis 10:45, 14 October 2007 (PDT)

For when the other page gets created: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=72gBNxoQAQg --Ornette 16:27, 14 November 2007 (PST)

Mugen belongs to fan works category, not here (assuming we would have such a category, which I don't personally endorse). --Dr. Nick 10:02, 18 December 2007 (PST)

what's this from?

Anyone know what show this is from? Screenshot of theatre --Ornette 01:01, 13 October 2007 (PDT) Or this one? --Ornette 03:11, 13 October 2007 (PDT)

It's from a dating sim spin-off OAV named Elf ban Kakyuusei, episode 4. I've uploaded a nicer-looking version of the screenie. Not sure about the second one, but based on their uniforms, it could be some newer To Heart anime. --Dr. Nick 09:59, 13 October 2007 (PDT)
Update: a poster over at AN identified the second screenie as being from Seto no Hanayome. --Dr. Nick 13:30, 13 October 2007 (PDT)
I got an anonymous to identify it, but no episode, so I went to the ANN link about episode 17 getting pulled because there were similarities to characters from another show, ended up being Kamen Rider or something, but the ANN forums talked about the screenshot. Downloading episode 16 now and I'll make a clean screenshot when it's donem --Ornette 14:08, 13 October 2007 (PDT)

Abenobashi

One of the episodes parodies NGE previews, complete with the "Jikai Yokoku" BGM. I can drag out my DVD-Rs and find out which one if need be. --Reichu 13:31, 30 December 2007 (PST)

Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuuutsu

That's stretching it. She's trying to wake him up and her hands were on his shoulders in order to shake him, not choke him.--Szmitten 10:40, 13 October 2007 (PDT)

[1] her hands look decidedly around his neck. But that's why I added the disclaimer, since I'm sure EoE isn't the first time a main character chokes another main character of the opposite sex while unconcious. --Ornette 11:16, 13 October 2007 (PDT)
In that screenie it certainly looks as if she's choking him (I wonder if we should include this fan-made shoopie...). But in any case, this is nothing a little tinkering with wording wouldn't fix. The disclaimer is good as it is, IMO.
I think there were a few other possible references in that scene where Yuki explains to Kyon who she is; I think there was an infinite loop of Yukis and some white-font-on-black-background captions similar to those in Eva. --Dr. Nick 12:53, 14 October 2007 (PDT)
I deleted the Haruhi entry. If you watch the actual scene, and I've seen this series four times now, she finds Kyon lying there and shakes his shoulder to awaken him. In no way is she choking him. This is way too weak, even for the possible tributes section. thewayneiac May 27, 2008. 20:21 EDT.

5 Centimeters per Second

I watched some of the clips on YouTube, and I noticed that the noise made by the railroad crossing alarms is exactly the same as heard in NGE's introspective train scenes(Whether all railroad crossing alarms sound like that in Japan beats me, however). In addition, there's an image of the two protagonists on a strange planet seeing Earth in the sky, which is an Escaflowne reference, but which also might be a subtle reference to the Rei-Lilith scene in EoE, where the sunlight shines from under the moon as Lilith's twelve wings spread.

Dunno how to post these here, though...I guess it'll have to wait till someone gets the DVD.

Railway crossings sound the same in Japan. Yes, cicadas sound the same everywhere in Japan too.--Szmitten 02:51, 14 October 2007 (PDT)
Stupid me. Never mind.--UrsusArctos 04:40, 14 October 2007 (PDT)

Genshiken

I need some sauce for the Genshiken entry, I don't own the manga so I don't know which volume this is in, or if it is even in the Omake section --Ornette 22:47, 14 October 2007 (PDT)

Gurren Lagann

http://evageeks.org/forum/viewtopic.php?p=78382#78382

NAveryW went to some con that had a Gurren-Lagann panel. I don't know which con so we should probably ask him. Except: "The mole pig stampede (one of Yamaga's favorite scenes, and mine as well), the crazy-looking animals, and the Gainax cameos were not scripted the way they ended up, but were the results of the animators going crazy." --Ornette 00:32, 15 October 2007 (PDT)

Also some from TTGL, although I'm not entirely sure they're references, http://www.tesuji.org/tmp/teppelinbuildings.png http://www.tesuji.org/tmp/gltrain2.png http://www.tesuji.org/tmp/genomeroom.png about the buildings hanging from the ceiling and the geofront train. Although I'm not really seeing the resemblance. --Ornette 18:18, 10 April 2008 (PDT)

The Teppelin buildings and the glass floor look slightly similar. Dunno what I should be seeing in the train pic, though. How about a when-in-doubt, low profile solution like this: describe such vague similarities in writing, but don't append any images. I could see that method working with the Diebuster impalement, for example. --Dr. Nick 13:33, 13 April 2008 (PDT)
The train reference reminds me of the sequence in Episode 1 with Shinji and Misato riding on the train into the Geofront, among other such scenes in the series. The flashes of light that pass by them are similar in both Eva and GL as well as the yellow light that appears later. At the very least, I would call it a vague reference. The city of Teppelin is constructed in such a way that it looks relatively similar to Tokyo-3 in its state of emergency (with its buildings extending into the Geofront).
Also, as another reference, in Episode 13 of GL, after a brief discussion of Nia's new hair cut, Nia speaks the line "The truth is, I..." followed by several seconds of silence. This may be a direct reference to Gendo's famous line in EoE. If anyone was wondering what she said after that, it's "I want to work." --Ironfoot 18:18, 24 April 2008 (PDT)
Nia and Gendo say different things in Japanese, listen: Gendo Nia. Nia says something more along the lines of "to be honest with you, I..." --Ornette 01:36, 28 April 2008 (PDT)

GTO

Here's a marginally nicer-looking (and cropped) screenie of Onizuka's scarf, if somebody feels like nuking the previous image. It's still not DVD-quality, but I plan to fix that eventually. --Dr. Nick 12:45, 15 October 2007 (PDT)

Koi no Mon

I've uploaded two screenies of Anno, pick one you like better. (I wonder if that beautiful lady with him is his wife? The ending credit moon runes were untranslated.) Also, the Sauce link needs to be put to a more appropriate place eventually. --Dr. Nick 13:58, 16 October 2007 (PDT)

This needs to be moved when we setup a page for references in other media --Ornette 09:54, 24 December 2007 (PST)
Yeah, same thing with Aoi House. --Dr. Nick 15:28, 26 December 2007 (PST)

Fooly Cooly

Which is the most commonly used rendering of the OVA title? FLCL, Fooly Cooly, or Furi Kuri? Or is it basically just pick one and stick with it (I've got no preference)? Also, I need to add a picture of Miya-Jun in Rei bandages, but my DVD capture program doesn't like my disks today. Does anyone know of any other possible NGE references in FLCL? I'm a fan of both, but don't want to put anything that only I think might be a reference. Incisivis 18:35, 16 October 2007 (PDT)

It says FLCL on the DVD box, so I say go with that. Also regarding this statement: "Hideaki Anno also provides the vocal effects for Miyu Miyu, the Nandaba family cat", is he actually listed in the ending credits? --Dr. Nick 13:36, 20 October 2007 (PDT)
I'm under the impression he went uncredited. It was just the occasional growl, and it was his "protege's" directorial debut afterall.--Szmitten 18:01, 20 October 2007 (PDT)

Keroro

I've uploaded another Keroro-screenie, but I have no idea of its in-show context. --Dr. Nick 14:49, 21 October 2007 (PDT)

Trinity Blood

Someone have more info of this screenshot? I watched it on Adult Swim but it was rather hard to sit through.

RahXephon

Not to reopen the old "Rah is an Eva ripoff" controversy, but I need a little help finding this particular image of two Mechas that are very obviously based of Eva-00 and Eva-02. ED: I saw some lower-res versions of the screenshots and I'm beginning to wonder if I was mistaken with the resemblance or not.

Nothing that I recall, are you sure it's rahxephon? --Ornette 16:27, 14 November 2007 (PST)
Yep, it was a RahXephon mecha called a Dolem, and this particular one had the name "Alternate". I totally forgot where I saw this, but it appeared to have the head shape of EoE Nigoki and the chin design of Eva-00. One had a red headpiece and another a blue headpiece. EvaXephon draws similarities to Israfel, Leliel, Armisael, and the introduction of Sachiel- of which, the Sachiel intro part, seeing the Angel from inside a ruined building, appears to be the only pertinent one, but I don't have RahX and can't see the sequence for myself. --UrsusArctos 17:19, 14 November 2007 (PST)
"EvaXephon draws similarities to Israfel, Leliel, Armisael"
Careful there. EvaXephon is also a troll site, and we need to make that clear in our entry. NGE didn't invent those enemy abilities: for example, Voltes V featured an "Israfel-style" monster-of-the-week back in 1977. We'll just list some of the less controversial references (preferably ones that EvaXephon failed to cover), add hefty disclaimers and that's it. --Dr. Nick 09:41, 30 December 2007 (PST)
It isn't from EvaXephon that I found this. (That site is nuts!) but I saw it somewhere else on the internets. I hate the EvaXephon site for drawing on non-existent similarities, but I do notice other similiarities- one shot of Ayato walking home with his schoolbag was totally NGE-style, and a scene with a sinking VTOL involved something like Eva-01's pectorals. Wierd and probably coincidental, but still invocative of NGE. --UrsusArctos 17:07, 30 December 2007 (PST)

Should we eventually have a comparison page or subsection on this page between RahXephon and Eva, or are we not going to even dignify it with an acknowledgement? --V 08:19, 2 February 2008 (PST)

Come to think of it, perhaps the latter would be better? There are times when RahX is pretty plainly different, but there are instances (Elvy with Misato's cross, a whole lot of the shots and the psychoanalysis) that scream NGE as well. Opening room for that unending controversy on our site would not be very wise, since there are people who are very passionately for and against the "ripoff" idea. Odd references like the pyramids are okay, but going beyond that, no. --UrsusArctos 17:43, 2 February 2008 (PST)
I agree that no special treatment is required. It was a bad choice of words on my part to talk about "controversy". There is no real controversy, despite what foam-mouthed trolls may claim. Rah is just another show that makes some minor references to Eva, nothing more. (And Ursus: there's psychoanalysis in Rah?) --Dr. Nick 03:39, 3 February 2008 (PST)
Psychoanalysis as in "surreal scenes where the characters talk to one another although they shouldn't physically be there". You should be able to find a video of Episode 26 on the internet, where a number of characters talk to Ayato in what looks a lot like instrumentality. And (I haven't seen this) there's a part where the RahX is sucked into a Dolem and Ayato sees an alternate version of his world. Also, stuff about how Ayato's kept saying he wants to protect people because of his own inadequacy, yadda yadda yadda. In addition, I've seen several shot compositions including one that is reminiscient of Eva-01's pectorals when the Eva is being moved down from the launch platform and a reverse "beast in the cage". All the same, Anno was actually with Izbuchi in a commentary about RahXephon and Gainax actually worked on Episodes 6 and 26, so I suppose Anno was perfectly okay about the way RahX looked. It's worth noting that most "Rah rips off NGE" complaints are from American viewers and reviewers, not Japanese. I actually asked AnimeNation's John Opplinger about where the industry draws the line for plagiarism and I'm waiting for his reply. --UrsusArctos 05:22, 3 February 2008 (PST)

Slayers Try

Kerel is played by Kaworu's Seiyuu, Akira Ishida. Doesn't this strengthen the case enough to warrant moving the entry into confirmed sightings? --thewayneiac 12:01 (EST) Feb. 01, 2008.

Not really, IMO, although it certainly strengthens the connection. But then again, the categories are rather vague, so I have no strong opinion one way or the other. --Dr. Nick 12:45, 1 February 2008 (PST)
I'm rewording the section description a bit. --UrsusArctos 15:14, 1 February 2008 (PST)

Love Hina and A.I. Love You

From THAT BOARD: >> Am I missing Any? 2 from Ken Akamatsu's mangas; in the TokyoPop "A.I. Love you" Vol. 8, chapter (program) 53 The protagonist's sister, Yayoi when going to a subterranean wing of the house exclaims "ooh, it' just like Nerv" Also in Akamatsu's "Love Hina" Vol. 8, Story 63, Naru exclaims to Keitaro who looks quite depressed "Hey! who told you to go all *Shinji* on me?"

Anyone have translated copies of those? I can only find the raws.--Ornette 03:05, 19 February 2008 (PST)

I've posted the "All Shinji" page from Love Hina. I don't have A.I. Love you. There's at least one more reference in the Love Hina Manga I could dig up if you wish. When they have to fight Motoko's sister, Keitaro suggests stepping on her with Su's Eva. --thewayneiac 21:12 EST. Feb. 19, 2008

Pani Poni Dash

'I forget the Episode, but in Pani Poni Dash, you can see a giant Rei on the earth on the monitor behind the parody characters from StarTrek. You can see it in AMV Hell 4, durring the Captain Jean Luke Picard song.'
Anyone have a screenshot of this? --Ornette 18:03, 22 February 2008 (PST)

Other references

ZapalacX has been linking screenshots from Diebuster when one of the enemy shoots a bunch of needles and it impales one of the mechs: http://i280.photobucket.com/albums/kk197/ZapalacX/shot0003.png It keeps reminding me of some other show, wasn't mecha, martial arts maybe, but I can't think of its name. Does anyone know where that reference is from? Should we include it in the references page? --Ornette 20:13, 9 April 2008 (PDT)

It doesn't look too much like the instance in Evangelion. IMHO, I don't think we should include it.--UrsusArctos 20:34, 9 April 2008 (PDT)

(From Kaminoyouni) This page in Vandread manga, the last frame [2] has a white giant. Can this be considered a reference to Adam? --Ornette 16:03, 1 May 2008 (PDT)

No. --Dr. Nick 07:29, 28 May 2008 (PDT)

Hayate

The Hayate with the Lance screenshot: that sequence of that episode I always thought was more a tribute to Diebuster, they look just like the spears that impale whats her face's mecha and it happens in the exact same way. --Ornette 02:46, 4 June 2009 (PDT)

You verified it in the forums. Anyway, I added it and the Lance looks 100% like the Lance from Eva. I was not aware of the Diebuster thing though, but now that this has been settled elsewhere, I think everything is ok. --Action_Bastard 11:52, 5 June 2009 (CDT)
