Re-Take Volume 01 begins where End of Evangelion left off, with Shinji strangling Asuka on the beach after Third Impact. From there [[Shinji]] wakes up in the hospital just after the 12th Angel attacks with Rei sitting by the bed and Asuka behind the door (just as in the anime). From this point on Shinji has seen all the events of the future take place and wishes to change these events. The first thought of this, however, comes in a synchro test where Shinji's synchro rate increases dramatically but when he is made aware of this, he suppresses his true power so he doesn't make Asuka feel like she is losing to him.
===Angel Bardiel===

Toji is selected as the next Eva pilot and Kensuke has his little whine about not getting picked. Although all of this is happening, Shinji acts differently towards Asuka, being a more positive and welcome friend to her , trying to do the correct thing and not being the wimp he was before, which he does quite well. Rei is being pushed aside and starts to get depressed, and shows affection
towards Shinji. However, this is because Shinji now knows what her true identity really is, and it scares Shinji to the point where he doesn't show much affection for her.
The battle of the 13th Angel [[Bardiel]], has been revised in Re-Take. Asuka, desperate to show off, charges into [[Eva-03]]/[[Bardiel]], who has their roles reversed; instead Asuka is getting choked. As Asuka's vital signs fade, [[Eva-01]] intervenes to save her and Shinji succeeds not only in saving Asuka but retrieving Toji who has only suffered a minor dislocation of the shoulder, at the cost of showing his true strength in the process. Thus, Asuka is extremely enraged and she ends up having a fight with Shinji in Misato's apartment. After the fight Asuka storms off leaving Shinji by himself where he says, "I didn't want for that to happen... Is it okay to let her be like that?" Then he has a flashback of the 14th Angel, [[Zeruel]].
===Angel Zeruel===
The battle with Zeruel begins the same with the Angel breaching the 18 layers of armor protecting the Geofront. Shinji already rushes into fight, Asuka launches herself in [[Eva-02]] in a fit of rage as she still doesn't want to lose to Shinji. Stunned, she watches Eva-01 fight the Angel, asking herself how Shinji is able to control his Eva so well; "There's no way Shinji can move that way..." Not wanting to lose to Shinji she opens fire with her rifle on the Angel and once again their roles are reversed.
With their roles reversed, Zeruel still attacks the same way as in the anime however, instead of having [[Eva-02]]'s head decapitated, Shinji, hoping o change the future, launches himself right in the path of the attack and severs [[Eva-01]]'s head. (This scene is different from the anime where Asuka would have run at Zeruel and had the nerve connections disconnected before the blow hit. In Retake she didn't run and the blow would have been fatal) but somehow Eva-01's nerve connections are disconnected just prior to the hit. With Eva-01 now headless and Asuka in a hysterical state, Shinji manages to reactivate Eva-01 and defeat Zeruel. Throughout this scene Rei is pushed to the side as Asuka is distressed, believing that Shinji has died.
===Change of the Story===
From here, the plot follows almost exactly the same to the original series. Just like the second scene in Re-Take, Shinji again wakes up in the hospital but this time Asuka is standing over him instead of Rei. Once again, a reversal of events takes place, with Rei standing at the door listening to the conversation. Asuka starts off being her typical self but almost lashed out when she says, "I'm here to tell you something... Th... Th...Think you're so good hah?! Stop getting in my way!"
She then proceeds to complain arguing that she could've destroyed the Angel without his help and that he should stop being a "show-off". When she gets the point of sarcasm, Shinji yells at her to shut up and finally tells Asuka that he wasn't showing off, but rather to protect her. Throughout the whole conversation, Rei is listening intently.
===Rei part 1===
During the phases of the next synchro test, it is revealed that both Asuka and Shinji's scores are increasing, however, Rei's are falling . Misato and Ritsuko begin to discuss the matter when the topic of Rei acting strangely starts. Ritsuko explains that she wanted to borrow some blue contact lenses which shocks Misato but Ritsuko says the following.
"Isn't it amusing? Rei's thought pathways...are infantile in relation to love".
===Kaji===
Shinji now in a mess as what to do is sitting by himself when Kaji happens to walk in. Shinji expresses his views on the situation to Kaji who in a very grown up way explains females to Shinji. Kaji explains to Shinji all the choices are his to make now "I'm acting like a know-it-all, but in reality... the one who makes the final decision is... yourself".

As Shinji is rushing through the corridors of Nerv running late, he is confronted by Rei. With a very blank look on her face (However, Rei was increasingly distressed) grabs Shinji and proceeds to drag him away whilst he questions her
"Why are you doing this? Tell me what's wrong".
Whilst this is happening Asuka happens to walk around the corner and notice Rei dragging Shinji down the hallway, where she proceeds to follow (keeping out of sight). Shinji pulls away, explaining to her he needs to get going which starts Rei (another reverse of roles) off down hill. She questions him on where it is he needs to go asking about Asuka and if it's her he is going to see; which he replies simply "Yes". Now very upset and almost about to cry, Shinji notices her blue eyes. Rei breaks down and attempts to paint her hair red. Shinji then proceeds to tell Rei he likes Asuka and there is nothing that can replace her.
During that whole conversation Misato and Ritsuko had been watching on the cameras, which leads to events further on.
===Asuka Accepts Shinji===

Shinji comes home from work surprised the apartment is empty. He walks in calling Asuka when she dives on him naked, hugging him. Shocked, Shinji proceeds to question her but she
ignores the questions and starts her own questions about whether he liked he. Asuka then wants the acceptance she never got.
Rei meanwhile becomes depressed--eventually committing suicide--because Shinji starts to ignore her (and later admits to Rei that Asuka is the one he loves). Shinji's ignoring Rei stems from the fact that he now knows what Rei's true identity really is, and it scares Shinji. To make things worse, Asuka from the Post Third Impact world starts appearing before him. This Asuka is bitter that Shinji tried to kill her after Third Impact and that he (in her view) has the nerve to become happy with the past version of her.
Shinji then refuses to her crying and accepts her promise and makes the same back to her. (The next part is why retake gets so many turn aways but don't worry because you can skip the pages 74 to 82).
Asuka and Shinji then proceed to have a very adult relationship with no contraception (this is vital to the story).
Later that night Shinji is laying next to Asuka as she sleeps very happily "Sleeping like a baby" as quoted by Shinji. Now the story adds a new character, she has many names Phantom Asuka & 3I Asuka are the most common names. This Second Asuka from EOE appears at the end of the bed scaring the S**T out of Shinji as he sees double. He then asks her if he is still dreaming that dream which she replies
"Yes to you I am just something from your dreams".
Still bandaged from her reincarnation she proceeds to remove the plug suit in front of him reviling her scarred body. Shinji is very shocked by the state of her body and begins to move back from her as she amps up. "I can't forgive you. You. You tried to kill me before". She begins to get under his skin when he wakes up thinking it must have been just a dream. At that moment the phone rings. Misato explains to Shinji there are some documents that she wants taken over to Rei. Then she tells him it's a order although they're only school documents. (this is explained a bit better in All Ages).
Rei becomes so distressed that she declines into clinical depression, resulting in suicidal thoughts. Feeling exhausted and heartbroken, she decides to give up on Shinji. Remembering her time with Shinji, Rei leaves the kettle on, just like in the manga. Shinji arrives at the door to her apartment where, after proceeding in, finds Rei's lifeless body hanging in front of him. Her last words are quoted from the NGE manga when Rei burns her hands on the kettle.
"The first time I touched them I felt nothing. The second it was a bit unpleasant? The third time they were warm. The fourth time... I was happy. May I... Touch them again? ... Ikari-kun's... ...hands".
The scene then cuts back to Asuka searching for Shinji in the apartment wondering where he has gone she lays back on the bed and contemplates being nice to Rei.
" The first... maybe from now on... I should start treating her better. Starting tomorrow, I'll start to call her by her name at least. Ayanami Rei".
Upon Asuka saying Rei the scene cuts back to Shinji who in on his knees screaming.

===Opening Scene===
Volume 2 begins with Shinji and Asuka laying in bed together. Asuka is somewhat surprised about their having so much sex, while Shinji--who's depressed about Rei's suicide--claims that he just wants to be with her. However, the next Angel, Arael appears. Shinji protects Asuka during the Arael battle to prevent her from being mentally-raped, but he ends up targeted as a result. During the battle, Misato becomes suspicious about Rei's condition since her suicide "attempt". The battle ends with a powerful AT Field destroying the Angel, revealed to be Eva-01. Post-3I Asuka appears before Shinji again, prompting Shinji to reply that this Rei is "the third."
Re-Take 02 opens with a very adult scene between Shinji and Asuka. Asuka then quotes an early Misato, Kaji scene from back when they where in college. Shinji, still very depressed after finding Rei, doesn’t really want to do much other than spend his time with Asuka which he makes quite clear to her. "I want to be with you Asuka. I don't want to meet anyone else or even talk to anyone else except for you. That's what you wanted too isn't it?" Their time is interrupted by the next Angel, which forces Shinji to head to Nerv and prepare.
===The next Angel===
Shinji, still deeply emotional that his words had caused Rei to take her own life, runs the whole thing over in his mind. He has another flashback from before 3I when he is told Eva-02 will be leading. The first role swap of Re-Take 02 then takes place. With Rei gone, Shinji and Asuka are ordered to fight the Angel. Shinji, not wanting Asuka to be mind raped again, launches Eva-01 without authority. Gendo doesn’t seem too concerned and then tells Fuyutsuki to "Awake Rei". A confrontation between Misato and Ritsuko about Rei's condition had been going on, when their attention is diverted to Eva-01.
As Eva-01 emerges, a powerful AT Field is detected and blocks all the sensors. This sends Asuka into a hysterical state, screaming for Shinji as his entry plug camera shows static. The Angel is neutralized and video is restored showing Eva-01 intact, standing in the rain.
The video recording shows Eva-01's AT field destroying the Angel.
===The changing room===
Shinji is sitting in the changing room when Asuka barges in. She starts questioning him but he won't answer. He then jumps onto her and begins kissing her then begins to have his way with her. She screams back at him to stop and that they will be noticed. During this moment Rei walks into the room. Rei walks up to her locker which is on the other side of the locker bay the where Shinji and Asuka are. Even though they’re not visible to her as she walks out she turns back and looks. It’s at this moment that Asuka makes Shinji aware that Rei noticed them. Shinji replies with, "It doesn’t really matter. She's the third anyway."

Evangelion Re-Take is a multi-volume adult dojinshi written by Studio Kimigabuchi, which presents an alternate ending to The End of Evangelion. Because of its art and story it has become one of the most popular fan-created works among the Evangelion fan community.
