First Lieutenant Maya Ibuki is one of the three main computer technicians at NERV HQ, along with Makoto Hyuga and Shigeru Aoba, and serves directly under Dr. Ritsuko Akagi. Maya frequently acts as Ritsuko's assistant, particularly with work on the MAGI supercomputers that control the base, and computer readouts from the the Evangelion units.
Maya often gets nausseous during particularly disturbing battles against the Angels.
When the JSSDF invades NERV HQ Maya does not shoot back at them with Hyuga and Aoba in defense of the base, completely shocked at the idea of shooting another human being. During most of the battle against the JSSDF, she is totally overwhelmed and keeps her head buried in a pink pilow she keeps at her desk. Maya screams "Sempai!" ecstatically during Third Impact when Rei/Lilith appears to her as Ritsuko, which may imply that she was secretly in love with Ritsuko. While it has never been confirmed if she was a lesbian, Maya was also extremely uncomfortable when Kaji flirted with her.
During her off-duty time at NERV HQ, Maya read romance novels.
