Mother deceased. As with all of Shinji's classmates, it is secretly known by Nerv that Kensuke is an Eva pilot candidate.

Kensuke is a military nut, who likes to travel to wilderness areas and play survivalist. He knows more about the doings of NERV than Shinji, and sometimes gives Shinji information he ought to already have. Kensuke is jealous of Shinji, and wishes he could become a pilot himself. Kensuke's best friend is Toji Suzuhara.
