"Evangelion:3.0+1.0" first 10 minutes explained. A comprehensive summary of what happens, why it happens, what it means and what it confirms about Evangelion 3.0.

    • Where are they?**

In Paris.

    • Who is there?**

Wille. Eva Unit 08-ICC piloted by Mari and 6 heavily shielded battleships are escorting a sciencentific team in a DSVR ("Deep Submergence Rescue Vehicle", the kind of submarine used to reach very deep parts of the ocean). The AAA Wunder is directing the operation from a safe location up above in the sky and Sumire Nagara, the dark skin crew member introduced in 3.0, is responsible for directing the flying movements of the 6 ships and Mari.

    • What are they doing in Paris?**

They are there to retrieve spare parts for their two Evangelion from an old branch of Euro NERV. After the events of 3.0 they are infact without any functional Unit, as Unit 08's arms got corroded at the end of 3.0 to eject Shinji from Evangelion 13, and Unit 02 self destruct at the end of 3.0 to save the Wunder from the Mark.09.

It is likely they flew to Paris immediately after the event of 3.0.

    • How do they manage to retrieve the spares?**

The scientific team suffesfully activates a Angel-sealing Hex Pillar. The Angel-sealing Hex Pillar is equipped with an Anti-L System. The operation was already initiated by unnamed "precessors" that completed it up to Stage 4, leaving it in stand by with only Stage 5 to clear for Wille.

    • How can the Angel-sealing Hex Pillar restore Paris?**

Currently unknown. It is also unknown if it's a temporary effect or a permament effect.

    • What even is this Angel-sealing Hex Pillar?**

From 2.0 onwards in almost every scene involving NERV or Wille's facilities there are some QR code-like symbols called Angel-Sealing Hex Glyphs. The [Wiki](https://wiki.evageeks.org/Angel-Sealing_Hex_Glyphs) is a good place to look for more informations. The notes links to very good threads on EvaGeeks that are worth of a look too. What is new information from this footage is that the Pillar is similar in nature to the Evas, so it's possibly not human made or at least not derived from human technology.

    • Why is the scientific team wearing plugsuits and helmets, why they have limited time?**

Paris is described as "Category 6 core-converted surface", and the Oxygen levels are at "-3". It is implied that the L-Barrier is the cause. In simple terms, the air is toxic and the ground is corroding, so plugsuits are acting as hazard suits. This also explains why they have to be dropped from the sky: the legs of the DSRV are already being corroded after a few minutes exposed near surface level.

    • Wait, what is this L-Barrier?**

At the end of Evangelion:3.0, in the very last scene, Asuka says that the "density of the L-Barrier is too strong" for Lilins (humans) to come and pick them. 3.0+1.0 confirms that the L-Barrier is fatal to humans.

SPECULATION: the L stands for Lilin (Lilin-Barrier).

    • But Asuka, Shinji and Rei are fine at the end of 3.0...**

It was already hinted in various occasions in previous movies, but it is extremely likely that Eva pilots aren't mere humans: at the end of 2.0 Shinji is capable of ripping the controls of his entry plug with bare hands; Mari grows fangs when he activates Beast Mode; in 3.0 Asuka has superhuman strenght; none of them aged past the age they had when first become Eva pilots (Curse of Eva). The synch with Evangelion Units have permantely altered the pilots' body.

While possibly unreleted, it is also worth nothing that the term LILIN+ was used in the preview at the end of 2.0.

SPECULATION: Eva pilots are partly Evangelion/Adams in nature.

FURTHER SPECULATION: Asuka may be partly Angel because of her eye.

    • What is going on with all the new Eva Units?**

There are three new enemy Evangelion types in the movie, all sporting what in the Rebuild continuity is Lilith's mask and the new NERV logo.

Eva 44A [read as "4 two A"]. As the name imply, they are actually two different Eva fused together. It can fly and it is equipped with a Lance of Longinus. Their AT-Field seems pretty weak as it is destroyed by Mari's 635mm cannons and they don't seems to be able to attack from distance. Interestly, Ritsuko states that they formed a community and that they are now a new species.

The next two types work together.

Eva 44B [read as "4 two B"]. Again, they are two different Eva units used to power a battery/capacitor. They don't have any weapon on their own and they lack any defense mechanism. Being fused to the battery from their upper torso they have the ability to march.

Eva 4444C [read as "4 four C"]. Called "the Boss" by Midori, it consists of four Eva torsos holding a positronic cannon fused on a drill system used to attack and to walk. It is powered by the Eva 44B.

The military use of 44B and 4444C is said to be prohibited by the Vatican Treaty, an international treaty introduced in 2.0 to limit the number of Eva Units a single nation can operate.

    • Who is coordinating the enemy Eva?**

Fuyutsuki. It is presumably not a full scale attack as Ritsuko says that he's "testing them".

    • What does Mari mean at the end with "preparing Unit-08 for overlapping"?**

Uknown.

In the Ultraman mythology the term "Ultra Overlapping" is used to indicate the fusion of the 6 Ultra Brothers, so it is possible that the world has been choses as an homage and that Unit 08 will be fused with another Eva later in the movie.

    • Where are Shinji, Asuka and Rei?**

According to Mari Shinji has yet to be found, so it's extremely likely they still are near the ruins of Tokyo 3.
