Screenshots Cut # Description/Dialogue Commentary

345
Closeup of Unit One’s hand sticking into the ground.

It sets out a bit.

SE <<(vigorous motion)>>

UrsusArctos: Similar effect to Episode 11 Cut 111 where Matarael stomps about the forest. The size of the huge hand coming down from above right next to the tree trunks serves to provide scale for the Eva and show how utterly dominant it is over the environment.

346

Unit One crawls like a child.

SE <<(crawling sound, sound of trees collapsing)>>

EVA:“(roaring voice)

UrsusArctos: First she behaved like an ape, now she's behaving like an outraged toddler. Making something so huge and magnificent act both infantile and bestial at the same time makes it far more terrifying than if she had just walked over to Zeruel's body.

Mbryo: While Unit 01 already had her plenty share of bestial moments throughout the series, this one tops it all off. She looks like something out of a kaiju movie rather than a giant robot. And as a side note, this particular cut is animated by Mitsuo Iso(磯 光雄) who also animated the fight between Eva 02 and MP Evas in EOE, hence the more 'human-like' proportions of the Eva unit.

347
Closeup of the side of Misato and Ritsuko.

They don’t say anything.

SE <<(OFF left) (footsteps)>>

348
Half of the angel’s face, and its core, being naked.

The angel is trying to resist in its last moments.

It unsteadily raises its face and casts light.

Unit One’s hand comes into the shot. With no hesitation it crushes the Angel’s face.

SE <<(vigorous motion)>>

SE <<バキッ ポキッ (sound of bone being smashed)>>

UrsusArctos: That puff of steam suggests that Zer's eye got boiled with its own pent-up energy. OUCH!

349
Unit One, beyond the trees in the forest.

It looks around the vicinity like a child.

EVA:“(growling voice, lowering) Gr Grrrr”

It raises its body in a child like pose.

350
Closeup of the front of Unit One.

The shot comes in closer, and Unit One partly closes its eyes.

Mbryo: I'm pretty certain that this has been brought up before, but the way that Unit 01's 'eye slits' are depicted throughout the series baffles me. In some scenes they appear to be actual slit-shaped holes in the helmet, while in other scenes they merely appear to be painted markings or digital displays. But in this particular cut, we see the slits widening and narrowing, implying that they represent the Eva's real eyes. And in the following cut, we see the Eva's green pupils exposed through the helmet, something that hasn't been depicted before. It's probably just an aesthetic choice, but all this leads one to wonder what exactly is going on in that particular portion of her helmet.

351
Unit One opens up its mouth from top to bottom widely!

SE <<グワッ>>

352
Unit One is directly holding onto the mouth with its hands.

SE <<ガッ グシュ (grab)>>

Its starts eating it.

SE <<ヌチュ (below continuing OFF)>>

UrsusArctos: A diet of raw electricity must make a big girl hungry. RIP Zeruel old chap, you did well by giving Yui-sama the big healthy S2 organ dinner she needed. On a more serious note, it's interesting how the script notes that she's grabbing Zeruel's mouth by her hands and starts eating it - Episode 05 indicated that the S2 organ was a part of an Angel's core.

Mbryo: Episode 16 through 19 really goes to great lengths to show how hyperviolent an Eva unit can be when it's not in control of the pilot, but this is probably the most aberrant behavior displayed by an Eva so far. Considering that the Evas and Angels are genetically identical, what Unit 01 is doing here could be considered cannibalism, in a sense. This scene also foreshadows that particularly gruesome sequence in EOE, though the gore is much less noticeable here due to Zeruel's mauled body being mostly concealed by trees. The Manga adaptation, however, makes less attempt to conceal it.

353
Closeup of the side of Misato.

She can’t believe this spectacle.

MISATO:“...It’s eating the angel?”

354
The back of Unit One, eating.

355
The front of Ritsuko. She has a fearful expression.

RITSUKO:“It’s taking the S2 engine into itself?”

UrsusArctos: Despite all the animalistic behavior on display, Yui knew exactly what she was doing.

Dr. Nick: It's interesting to ponder whether Yui is being opportunistic here, or if she planned to consume an Angel's S2 organ at some point to begin with and simply picked Zeruel because it was a super strong Angel. Knowing what we know of Yui, I lean towards the latter option.

356
RITSUKO:“(OFF) Eva Unit One?”

Closeup from its eye.

EVA:“(groaning) Grrr...”

Unit One’s face rises.

You can see its teeth.

Red dyed pipe and garment like material spills out from the space between its teeth.

UrsusArctos: If you look at the very last image on the page, it looks like a part of Zeruel's mouth is still attached to the bottom. You can see Zeruel's "smile" or what's left of it if you turn it 90 degrees to the right.

357
A dumbfounded Ritsuko in front of Ibuki, throwing up.

IBUKI:“Ugh!”

Mbryo: Maya really is a faint-hearted person, and this becomes more apparent as the series progresses.

358
There are leftover parts of the angel’s face by the trees with red color clinging on them. Unit One’s head comes in the shot, biting into it.

SE <<(OFF right) (eating sound)>>

SE <<ガッ>>

UrsusArctos: If the eyes are directly connected to the S2 organ, that'd explain why Sachiel, Israfel and Zeruel preferentially use optical blasts. However, it makes about as much sense as trying to use a camera as a laser beam after hooking it up to a generator. (Joke added to the additional comments)

Mbryo: There are slight inconsistencies with how Eva 01's dentition is drawn during this whole sequence. In some cuts, her teeth are jagged and uneven, while in this particular cut, they are noticeably less so.

Additional Commentary

UrsusArctos:
Colonel Quaritch from Avatar: "Out under that city every clone of your mom that walks, crawls or flies wants to kill you and eat your eyes for jujubes".
Zeruel: "Couldn't you have said that sooner...?"...*hurk*...
Yui-sama: "Eyebeam-firing eyeballs, mmmmm...taste like jujubes!"

359
Unit One eating.

SE <<(sound of bone crunching)>>

Finished eating, it slowly stands up and looks this way.

EVA:“Grrrrr...”

It looks up at the sky and becomes erect.

SE <<グオオ ウオオン>>

360
Tip of Unit One’s shoulder.

Its body inside swells, straining and stripping off the armor with a snap.

SE <<グググググ>>

SE <<バキッ>>

361
Similarly, the armor on its right shoulder cannot bear the strain and it is blown off!

SE <<バキュン>>

362
The side of Ritsuko.

RITSUKO:“The bindings!”

363
Beyond Ritsuko and Misato’s chest, Hyuga makes an inquiry.

HYUGA:“Bindings?”

364
The side of Ritsuko. She has a strict expression.

RITSUKO:“Yes. That isn’t armor.”

365
Unit One is facing the heavens, howling.

RITSUKO:“(Eva’s Voice) It's binding that we use to control the Eva’s natural power.”

366
Everyone looks, with horror.

RITSUKO:“Now it has untied itself from the spell we used to make it our power. We’re unable to”

367
Kaji looking at Unit One, which is looking up at the heavens and howling.

RITSUKO:“(OFF) stop the Eva anymore.”

UrsusArctos: There are some very subtle throwbacks in this scene. The lampposts between Kaji and the Eva have tops in the shape of an inverted pyramid and their general shape is similar to the Tower of Babel from Nadia. The Tower of Babel was a communications device meant to reach to other worlds, repurposed as a weapon. The Evangelions are derived from lifeforms meant to communicate with other worlds, repurposed as weapons. The very fact that Yui is looking up to the heavens (through all the rock above) and howling hints at her ultimate goal.

Mbryo: Eva 01's roar here is absolutely horrific, not quite a bestial roar but not quite human as well. It's Megumi Hayashibara, Yui and Rei's seiyuu herself screaming, only the sound is pitched-down to achieve a guttural effect.

368
Closeup of Kaji.

KAJI:“Unit One has awakened and is liberated. SEELE won’t be silent about this.”

369
In the safety of the official business room.

Two people are standing at the window.

KAJI:“(OFF) Is this part of your scenario too, Commander Ikari?”

UrsusArctos: The script calls it the "official business room", although it looks just like his office, which Zeruel should have blown up when it took a shot at the top of the pyramid. Interesting that Gendo and Fuyutsuki chose to head to an interior room rather than head outside to observe the action like all the others. Perhaps they anticipated this and wanted to be where their reactions wouldn't be noticed?

370
Unit One is reflected in Ikari’s glasses; beyond him, Fuyutsuki has a serious look.

FUYUTSUKI:“It’s started, hasn’t it?”

UrsusArctos: The original version was much brighter and didn't have Gendo covered in blood, which made it obvious that Gendo was looking at a reflection. Here it looks almost as though he's looking at a hologram. Although the script describes Fuyutsuki's look as "serious", he appears vaguely pleased by this turn of events.

371
Closeup for a moment of Unit One roaring.

IKARI:“This is the beginning.”

EVA'S VOICE:“Oooooooooh!”

SEELE-01: The beginning of the End!

END
TEXT:“To Be Continued”

EVA'S VOICE:“Oooooh!”

BGM END: E-16 [THE BEAST II]
