TOJI (OFF):“I haven't had lunch yet. I'll do it as soon as I've eaten.”

HIKARI:“Suzuhara, you always buy your lunch from the school co-op.”

TOJI (OFF):“It's not like I've got anyone to cook for me.”

HIKARI:“I have two sisters, named Kodama and Nozomi.”

UrsusArctos: Hikari looks away, since the normally stern class rep is shy and taking an unusually long time to come to the point. She really doesn't want this conversation to go wrong. On a different note, as mentioned in the Character Name Origins page, Nozomi (wish/hope), Kodama(echo), and Hikari(light) are the three train services of the Tokaido Shinkansen.

HIKARI (OFF):“I always cook lunch for them, but...”

TOJI:“Must be a lot of work.”

HIKARI:“And I always end up cooking too much for our lunches.”

UrsusArctos: This entire conversation really does like the first tentative steps towards love by two people who are really scared of admitting their feelings to one another.

Dr. Nick: In an actual school romcom this exchange would have led to misunderstandings and hijinks. Since everything works out instead, a perceptive viewer will immediately sense a death flag

UrsusArctos: Is it just me, or do Asuka's body proportions seem more childlike in this shot to go along with her rather childish pose?

UrsusArctos: How did the plane take off with the Eva vertically below it, anyway? That aside, this is supposed to be Massachussetts. I don't think we've ever heard where in Massachusetts the 1st branch is located, but Cambridge (home of MIT and Harvard) is a perfectly good bet.

UrsusArctos: This is the first shot we get of Eva-03. The fact that it resembles Toji's usual outfit, is crucified, and is being carried aloft in a thunderstorm all visually signal that this Eva is doomed.

Dr. Nick: While Evangelion goes hog wild with all kinds of religious imagery, mechs (and mech pilots) being crucified is actually an incredibly common old-school super robot trope. Like, crucifixion is more popular in Japan than Jesus.

Parkagirl: Hikari is humming "Fly Me to the Moon" here! This could be interpreted as reinforcing what we've just learned in this episode: she's smitten with Toji.
