Misato refused to let Asuka use her lavender perfume saying "It's not for kids". Kaji smells of lavender, which doesn't just mean that Misato succeeded in gaining his affection where Asuka failed - it ties to the aircraft carrier scene in Episode 22' where Asuka demands that Kaji acknowledge her as an adult. She hasn't just lost Kaji to Misato, she's lost any chance of being acknowledged as an adult.
