This is my chance!

Screenshots Cut # Description/Dialogue Commentary

085

Super telephoto shot of the tanker.
There is a covering on the bow deck. A helicopter is parked on top of the bridge.

086

Asuka's shadow, seen upon the canvas.
Asuka (with a proud manner) grabs the canvas at the bottom edge of the screen and rolls it upwards.

SE <<Rustle!!>>

Shinji wears a blank look behind her.

SHINJI:“...It's red, Unit-02.
I didn't know that.”

ASUKA:“It's not just the coloring that's different.”

Line: Why does Asuka remind me so much of Misty from Pokemon? She always did, but particularly in this caption and I dunno why.

Kendrix: She had it painted her favorite color, which by itself shows her to have a different attitude towards it – it’s her pride, rather than something she feels subjected to. Hence why she wears the interface clips in everyday life.

UrsusArctos: The pilots don't seem to have any influence over the garish color schemes of the Evas. Perhaps red is her favorite color because the Eva, which she's obsessed about since she was little, was painted red? On a meta level, red has been used in mecha anime to mark the personal unit of an ace pilot ever since Char Aznable's legendary red mobile suits from Mobile Suit Gundam.

087
Missing number.
Line: Such an interesting shot. Too bad they cut it.

UrsusArctos: Is the intended blank look puzzlement? Curiosity? I can't figure this one out. There's nothing indicative in the text either.

088

Unit-02, submerged in a pool inside the cabin.
Shinji stands on its head.
Asuka stands on its back.
She speaks triumphantly.

ASUKA (OFF~ON):“After all, Units 00 and 01 were the prototype and test type of the development process. The fact that it synchronized with you, who had no training, is good evidence of that.”

UrsusArctos: The position Eva-02 is lying in reminds me of the image of Adam being excavated from Antarctica [1]. The script says that Shinji stands on Eva-02's head, but he's obviously on the pontoon beside it, while Asuka demonstrates, yet again, that kids in this universe can hop up to impossible-to-reach parts of mecha.

Kendrix: I think that’s a rationalization that she came up with on the spot. To make his pesky achievement a fluke that didn’t count, since he’s only got a “test model”. Unbeknownst to her, Eva-01 is actually the most powerful Eva, since it is no mere copy, but a full-fledged “offspring” of Lillith.

UrsusArctos: While Eva-01 uses Lilith's biomass, it's hard to call it a "full-fledged offspring" of Lilith since its morphology is the same as what we've seen from Adam and the other Adam-biomass derived Evas. Whether that or the soul inside being in one piece is responsible for Eva-01's superior performance in battle is a discussion that's been had many times before on EGF. It won't be until the end of Episode 19 that Eva-01 becomes unquestionably superior from a purely physical perspective.

089

Shinji, looked down upon.

SHINJI:“......”

ASUKA (OFF):“But this Unit, Unit-02, is different.”

Line: Seriously Asuka stop going on such huge platforms! She will seriously hurt herself at some point if she continues this dangerous habit! Oh, wait...It already happened. *Pride before a Fall tvtropes page flashback appears*

090

Low angle shot of Asuka, on her high horse.

ASUKA:“This Unit, created for actual combat, is the world's first...”

Mr. Tines: As in cut 018, and 083 Asuka is on the high ground, placing herself above the unknown quantity of the Third Child.

thewayneiac: I'm surprised she didn't suddenly realize that he could see up her skirt, and jump down and slap him.

Javi2541997: Here in the Hispanic countries we made a meme about this scene called "Feliz Jueves", Happy Thursday.

091

The enormous Unit-02, lying in the pool.

ASUKA:“...true Evangelion.
The official model.”

There is a sudden tremor.

SE <<Thud>>

092

Shinji, in a panic.

SHINJI:“W......what was that?”

A delayed shock-wave shakes the surface of the water.

SE <<Boooom>>

ASUKA (OFF):“An underwater shock wave!”

Kendrix: Contrast Shinji’s shaky standing with Asuka being easily able to climb the Eva and keep her balance on top of it. She immediately knows what the sounds mean, her military knowledge showing...

093

Asuka, somewhat tense.

ASUKA:“The explosion was nearby!”

Kendrix: ...on the other hand, while she’s fit & trained, she hasn’t been in a real fight yet, which from what I’ve heard from actual protesters, soldiers, riot police etc. is actually a big difference. The main way you learn to handle real fights is by being in a real fight, and there’s a huge difference between one who was and one who wasn’t.

There have been cases of karate blackbelts being mugged or raped because their freeze response kicked in, sport/training doesn’t per se get you ready for situations where there is a real danger to life & limb. So it makes sense that Asuka would be “a bit tense” here despite her cocky act. Shinji, meanwhile, is sort of able to snap into “business mode” at this point.

094

On the deck of the ship.

SE <<Footsteps - Tap tap tap tap tap...>>

Asuka appears, followed by Shinji.
They look out to sea, leaning over the railing.

SHINJI:“...What's that?”

095

Their perspective. The bridge section of a cruiser has been destroyed. A moment passes, and then there is a small explosion.

SE <<Rumble>>

A column of water shoots up from the surface of the sea in front of it. The columns proceed towards the right.

SE <<Fsshhhh fwssssh>>

096

Shinji and Asuka stare out across the water in mute amazement.

SHINJI:“It can't be... an Angel!?”

ASUKA:“That!? A real one?”

Kendrix: Another incredibly important snippet. First, because we see Shinji quickly deduce what’s up, showing that he’s come to a grim acceptance of his role at this point, but also because you see Asuka’s mask slipping for a moment – “A real one?!” as in, so far she’s only fought simulations. You see it in her expression, too, her eyes go wide and there’s some disbelief in her voice.

The one special quality of Miyamura’s performance which the less good dubs don’t capture is that, maybe because her own personality is different enough that she rather sympathies than empathizes with Asuka, you never lose the sense than in the shrill frivolous ridiculous moments, Asuka is shrill, frivolous & ridiculous because she’s a child, not cause she's a “bitch” or a trope.

097

A column of water shoots up behind a cruiser!

SE <<Bkassshhh>>

UrsusArctos: In case you're confused about why the script calls the Russian aircraft carrier Kuznetsov a "cruiser", the Russian designation of the ship is "Heavy Aviation Cruiser", in order for it to get past the Dardanelles and into the Black Sea. Anno really knows his ships!

098

Asuka smiles inappropriately, looking at the shaken Shinji out of the corner of her eye. (Her dialogue is delivered like a monologue)

SHINJI:“Oh no, we've got to get back to Misato-san...”

ASUKA:“A cha~~ance.”

Sailor Star Dust: Oof. The scene becomes one of many that are downright painful, come Director's Cut 22'.

Line: This smile of hers is...scary.

Javi2541997: Chaaaance of showing off again and getting recognition from everybody.

Zusuchan: This shows just how much Asuka really wants to prove her greatness-even in the face of an attack by an otherworldly monster, what she thinks of is how good of a chance it is to prove her superiority. In this episode, it might seem like something a bit harmless and in keeping with the lighter tone of the episode, but the rest of the show takes that notion down.

Kendrix: Here, however, we see one of her greatest strengths, that she’s proactive & good at quick-thinking, which Shinji… really isn’t. She decides to take independent action without checking with their superiors, while Shinji would’ve wasted time establishing communications. Considering that Gaghiel could sink them at any moment, time was of the essence here. It’s funny that the script explicitly says she’s talking “like a monologue”, like she’s forgotten all about Shinji & thinking only about showing off XDD

UrsusArctos: As proactive and quick-thinking as she is, her eagerness to show off makes her poor at grasping the bigger picture, and the fact that she's forgotten Shinji is part of it. More on that in a later comment.
