129A
REI (OFF):“Which way do you really feel?”

SHINJI (OFF):“I don't know. No, both ways are real.”

MISATO (OFF):“And that's why you pilot the Eva, isn't it?”

SHINJI (OFF):“Because right now, the Eva is all I have.”

REI (OFF):“Because otherwise, you can't maintain your identity.”

MISATO (OFF):“It's true, Eva Unit 01 is a part of who you are.”

RITSUKO (OFF):“But if you keep clinging to the Eva, the Eva itself will become you.”

KAJI (OFF):“The Eva itself will become all you are.”

MISATO:“The real you will cease to exist.”

SHINJI (OFF):“I don't care! I never had anything to begin with anyway! Even the cello lessons I used to take all came to nothing.”

ASUKA (OFF):“That's because you never took the initiative to make something of it!”

SHINJI (OFF):“But I can pilot the Eva now!”

ASUKA (OFF):“And eventually, you won't be able to do anything without the Eva.”

Mr. Tines: There's a project here to track the images to their source cuts (for this and other flashing image cuts.

UrsusArctos: Does the real you even exist, or is the real you what you shape it into? And do you take the shape of what you base your identity on? Although Evangelion is based on the idea that there really is such a thing as "the real you", one could argue (from a Buddhist perspective) that there's no such "real you" and that you are shaped both by yourself and the people and objects around you. The Eva gives shape to Shinji in this case because he lets it shape his identity.
