Shinji lost his mother Yui Ikari at a young age. He was then abandoned by his father Gendo Ikari.

Shinji has been summoned to Tokyo 3 by Gendo to pilot Unit-01 against the Angels. He lives intially with Misato Katsuragi; they are later joined by Asuka Langley Soryu.
