She pursues these wacky dangerous strategies because she couldn't forgive herself if she didn't try her best - which, for all her flaws, makes her pretty inspirational. And we've previously see in Episode 06 that Shinji has a certain admiration for people who seem to have the kind of determination he can't always bring himself to muster.
