Eva's hand in episode 1

The commentary says that's Eva 00's hand in bakelite. I think it's Eva 01's hand in coolant.

The difference is that first, Eva 00 was never buried up to its hands in bakelite. If you look, the bakelite stops before it reaches its hands.

Second, Eva 00's hand was in a closed fist, ready to bunch. The hand in that scene is not. --V 19:32, 19 July 2007 (EDT)

I have a couple of objections to this interpretation: Immediately after they pass the hand, they board a small hover boat and travel some distance before they reach Unit-01. Why should they have to do so if this were already Unit-01?

Also see scene 7. Unit-01's arms are in restraints; she has to break one of them to save Shinji from the falling lghts.

The Evangelion poised as if protecting Shinji. The workers are confounded.

Worker B “The Eva moved!”

Worker C “How could it!?”

Worker D “It wrenched off the restraints on the right arm!”

That doesn't seem to be the case with the mystery hand.

Yes I think that her reciting the "Oni" system is a coincidence. However you raise some other good points. Hmmm...I want more analysis on this. Okay, well first, we don't really see much in that shot other than basically the palm of the hand; from what little we can see, there could actually be restraints on the "Eva in questions"'s arms. I think it could be either way on that (shot is unclear). However, you raise the good point of that they go up an elevator, only to then have to take a motor boat to get to Eva 01 which is clearly in the distance. Hmmm......well it could be just that the base has a complex labyrinth-like layout; but I kind of think it's just that the Eva's hand is so big that it looms behind them even when really far away. Could have been just poor planning on the animator's part. I think the Eva pens are just huge; they use all the Evas in one big LCL filled room. But Eva 00 wasn't in the pens, it was in a separate experiment room. At any rate, the experiment room in episode 5 didn't have really big windows on its sides. The Eva pens do. ....so yes, it seems odd that they see Eva 01 in the distance, then have to take a hoverboat to it...but I think it's just that they're looking across the LCL-filled Eva pen from the other side, but Eva 01 is so big the hand still looms in the distance. --V 12:55, 20 July 2007 (EDT)

Additionally, looking up episode 5, you can see that the bakelite infusion stops well before it gets above Eva 00's waist. You can see this when Gendo runs into the room and it shows a shot of the Entry Plug from above; the bakelite infusion has stopped but it hasn't filled the room or reached the top of the Eva. Also, we could quibble that bakelite is red and LCL is shown as purple in the Eva pens and orange in the Entry Plugs (I guess when you oxygenate it it changes color). Just checking the pose Eva 00 stops in, both of its hands are clenched into fists, and one is also directly touching a metal wall. --V 13:01, 20 July 2007 (EDT)

Checking back, on rewatching Episode 07 we see Shinji, Misato, Ritsuko, Makoto, and Maya descending on an elevated platform in front of the same purple-tinted tank that we see in Episode 1. Eva Unit 00 was already freed from bakelite at this point, so if it was Eva 00 in Episode 1, the bakelite was completely removed by episode 5, so it shouldn't be there anymore. --V 16:59, 23 July 2007 (EDT)

A very brief summary that reiterates things by necessity: During her first berserk incident, EVA-00's last punch puts her right hand straight through the wall. What they pass by is apparently the outer wall of the same test facility; it is immersed in the fluid they use to "refrigerate" the Evas, implying containment within a larger enclosure. EVA-00 is the only person whose hand this can possibly belong to, since they are enroute to EVA-01's cage -- they are a while yet to boarding the hovercraft -- and EVA-01's hands are fully restrained, not going through any walls.

Advice: Make sure you check out an accurate translation; ADV blew their dub translation here.

The dub has:

"I just wanted you to know that I'm here for you."

Misato actually says:

"This is just about all I can do for you"

To which Shinji replies in a horrified tone of voice:

"No, Misato! Stop it!"

I corrected a correction

I restored "embarrassedly" to this sentence: "Misato explains that Pen-Pen is their other "roommate", and advices Shinji to cover up, and he slinks embarrassedly back into the bathroom." It had been changed to "embarassingly". Emabrassedly = "in an embarassed manner"; embarrassingly would mean that he should be embarassed that he slunk away. --thewayneiac Nov. 27, 2008 9:51 EST.
