Eva-03's Soul

The Eva2 video game (PSP version only) confirms that Toji's mother is within Eva-03 during his scenario. And of course in-series, there's Ritsuko's "child whose core can be prepared immediately" line. With the updated EML link, I think Tsurumaki was just remembering wrong, (similar to certain things that Hiroyuki Yamaga has stated in the past). Or maybe Tsurumaki somehow misunderstood how souls worked in Eva-verse. (EG: He somehow assumed Episode 17/18 was somehow giving "hints" that part of Rei's soul was there due to Dummy Plug issues/Rei's concern over Toji.) *Shrug* Oh: and whatever happened to the soul speculation being on their own separate pages? --Sailor Star Dust 05:51, 12 September 2011 (UTC)

Yamaga didn't work on Eva though in any major capacity, as far as I can tell; certainly nothing like Tsurumaki. So he's worth discussing as the only direct source on it - I've always wondered how much to trust the video games, and qualifying it as the PSP version doesn't inspire additional trust. (That's what the sister theorists were saying on the EML - Touji's mother is already out of the picture, how can the core be prepared immediately? And his sister is rather emphasized in Rebuild in a way that feels like commentary on fan expectations - that the sister would be the core.) --Gwern 06:49, 12 September 2011 (UTC)
Aren't you missing the point of the "dead mother" business? Together with the revelation that the entire class are pilot candidates, the implication is that Nerv has the souls of all of Shinji's classmates mothers in storage somewhere. That Toji's mother is out of the picture is evidence for it being her soul, not against. I'm skeptical that the "sister" theory should be mentioned, at least without its weaknesses being pointed out, as it is based on a what seems to be an unjustified reading of a single line of dialogue:
RITSUKO (OFF):“Getting his sister transferred to our hospital here at Headquarters was the one condition he gave.”
Ritsuko says that moving Toji's sister to Nerv facilities was a condition that Toji imposed upon them, not something they suggested. The "sinister implications" seem to be an over reading.
Also, we really shouldn't drag Rebuild info into the main article. There's a section for it near the bottom of the page. Comparing alternate continuities only compounds the confusion.
EDIT: Now that I think of it, the info you added on the sister theory should have gone on the Eva-03's Soul article, not the main article. --thewayneiac 11:44 AM EDT.Sept. 12, 2011
I read a great deal of endless wrangling about the souls in the EML archives, which never came to a good conclusion because the dead mothers thing has always been problematic in Eva, even only considering NGE TV. Whose soul is in Unit-00? (Remember Yamaga was just as confused as when Tsurumaki was asked about Unit-03?) In Unit-03? In Unit-04 before it went kablooey? If the dummy plugs work so well, why the mothers? Why does one classmate mention her mother as alive if dead mother = pilot candidate? And then - why does Rebuild throw even more monkey wrenches into it if it's a basic Eva mechanic? Whose mother is in the Eva Mari casually disposes of in 2.0, or for that matter, why does Misato even have an option who to put into Unit-03? etc. (And the sister theory was not based on a single line, although I'd note that edifices have been built on single lines before, like pretty much the whole SEELE-raped-Ritsuko thing.) --Gwern 16:31, 12 September 2011 (UTC)

Could you dig up some more of the support for the sister theory in addition to Ritsuko's line? I don't want to say that's all there is if it isn't true. --thewayneiac 12:41 PM. EDT. Sept. 12, 2011

Eva-03 General editing talk

I propose putting all the soul speculation on one page. The page "Soul of Eva-00" could be made "Evangelion Resident Souls". That way, we could have speculation on Eva-00 as well as Eva-03 and other Evas (harpies, for instance) so clutter like that on this page could be avoided. --UrsusArctos 08:15, 21 March 2009 (PDT)

The Eva-00 soul issue is big and specific enough to deserve its own page. This is a more "general" thing, IMO, plus it involves the whole "mothers and children who've lost their mothers" thing where Rei and Eva-00 do not. --Reichu 22:11, 23 March 2009 (PDT)

Ursus, I see you modifying "she"s to "it"s. Was that policy ever officially changed, though...? If you did it because "Bardiel =/= Eva-03", well, Bardi IS using her body, and this is Eva-03's article, so, for simplicity's sake...

Bardiel is officially compared to a "fungus", as well, not "mucus". I can provide a citation for this later. --Reichu 22:41, 12 April 2009 (PDT)

I saw the scene in question. You're right, the growth does appear during the activation test. I suppose I'll let the Eva stay as a "she"...and no, we didn't officially rescind the policy of calling an Eva "she", but I think we changed it to something like "and Eva can be called a she or an it, but don't alternate between two in the same article or part of the article." Thanks for reminding me of that. --UrsusArctos 00:21, 13 April 2009 (PDT)

Analysis Dump

The Eva-03 page had been pretty polished overall, so the "Analysis" dumped off from Episode 18 looked pretty out of place. Consequently, I'm dumping it here so that it can be dealt with more appropriately.

To be honest, the second note is mostly pointless speculation, and more pointed speculation on what Maya meant by "ZOMG DUMMY SYSTEM NO CHIKARA!?!" should go onto the dummy system page. The stuff about Bardiel and the entry plug is more for Bardiel's page, and, even then, worth only a brief mention -- it's a convoluted issue that warrants a T&A page of its own.

---

  • Eva-03 is already in a battle-ready state, according to Ritsuko. How it differs from the previous three Evangelions is not known.
  • Eva-01 under the dummy system breaks Eva-03's neck in seconds (When the Angel-infected eva failed to strangle Eva-01 after a much longer period of time) and destroys the rest of its body seemingly without effort. It is not explicit if Eva-01 is physically more powerful, if Eva-03 is weakened by its mutations, or if the dummy system bestows abnormal power, but Maya's line "Is this the power of the dummy plug?" seems to support the latter.
  • It's possible that the reason Bardiel traps the entry plug is because it is intelligent enough to realize that the the eva might not be able to move without a plug in place.
    • Bardiel may have needed to infect the entry plug (and possibly make contact with Toji) as part of the infection process, and the plug appears to contain part of the Angel's biomass when seen in its wrecked state. This makes it probable that the plug had to be crushed to kill the Angel.
