0.0) Format of this document.
Each separate topic is marked with "x.y)" at the beginning. Square brackets ("[x.y]") marks a reference to another topic.
Some terms are listed in both romanized Japanese and English. In those cases the Japanese terms comes first.
Japanese romanization mostly follows the Hepburn system. But I don't have a reference to that so it might not be exact. Kanjis are marked by initial caps and Katakanas are marked by all caps.
Japanese people's names are presented family name first. Thus, in the name "Ikari Shinji" Ikari would be the family name.

Section 1. General information about the series.
1.0) Story Background.
On September 13, AD2000, a disaster later known as the Second Impact strikes the earth. A large explosion at the South Pole said to be caused by a meteor melted the ice caps, causing the sea level to rise and the earth's axis to tilt, and causing the death of two billion of the world's population in the aftermath.
In the year 2015, an unknown object approaches Tokyo-3. At the same time Ikari Shinji was called to this city by his father after a long separation. {...}
1.0.1) What does "Shin Seiki Evangelion" translate as?
Literally, it translates as "The Gospel of a New Century". However Gainax has used its discretion to name the English title "Neon Genesis Evangelion", which is a combination of three Greek words. "Euangelos" is the Greek word for Gospel, composed of "eu" (good) and "angelos" (news).
1.1) Tell me about Genesis 0:0, 26 TV episodes, and the two movies.
The canon of Evangelion is the 26 episodes of its TV series. There was also a videotape, Genesis 0:0, {which is a promotion of the series}. A movie "Evangelion: Death and Rebirth" was released March 1997, and another one "The End of Evangelion" was released July 1997.
The director's cut of "Death (True)" and "Rebirth" was shown on Japanese satellite TV (JSB), 2 January, 1998, from 10:10pm to 12 midnight.
A new movie, "Revival", was released on March 7th, 1998, and includes a re-edited version of the "Death" sequence of the first movie "(True)" (second edit), and comprises of all three segments ("Death (True)", "Rebirth" and "End".)
Special screenings of "Death", "Death/True^2 Air Magokoro Kimi Ne" was shown on July 24-30, 1999.
In addition, the Red Cross Book (RCB) lists a glossary of terms as used in the series and films, and claims to be the final explanation of the secrets and mysteries of Evangelion. (See 5.8) for a list of the definitions given in the RCB.)
1.1a) What are the different versions of the films?
Death & Rebirth (March 1997): Original theatrical motion picture; Death is a retelling of the first 24 TV episodes with augumented animation. Rebirth is an original feature, which chronicles events directly following episode 24.
End of Evangelion (July 1997): Original theatrical motion picture, which chronicles events directly following Rebirth. It is divided into two sections, "Air" and "Magokoro Wo, Kimi Ni".
Death (True) and Rebirth (January 1998): Japanese satellite broadcast. Death (True) is a second edit of the original Death feature.
Revival (March 1998): Theatrical motion picture compiling all three segments, the first segment being a second condesation of the first 24 episodes, the second and third being Revival and End.
1.1.1) What is "Genesis 0:0"
The tape is filled with video images of the art design for the series. There are eight parts to the tape, each describing different art designs, such as characters, mecha, etc. It is intended to be an introduction to the series.
1.2) Who are the characters?
The description are mostly from the character description of the film books. (Heights are estimations, and are not derived from any reliable source.)

1.3) The EVAs.
Evangelions are artificial beings created as versatile weapons against Angels. They are piloted from "Entry plugs" situated in the EVAs' backbones. A pilot needs to synchronise with an EVA in order to pilot it. The EVAs' origin is part of the main plot of the series. Spider-like appearance, it secretes acid like substance from eye that can melt steel, and even EVA armor

It uses giant sphere like thing as decoy, when its target is lured, it creates void 650m in diameter yet only 3 nano meters thick, absorbing whatever is on it. The void is described as the "Sea of Dirac".

Its real form is rather unknown, however it manages to take over EVA-03 when it is passed through a cloud.

1.6) Religious glossary
The definitions given here are references outside the TV series and motion pictures, and do not define them within them.
1.6.1) What is the tree-like image seen in the opening credits?
This is the Sephirotic System, devised by Athanasius Kirchner in 1653. A German priest, he studied the Kabbalah, a tome of Jewish mysticism, and created the diagram.
The Kabbalah appears to an influence in the conception of Evangelion. Meaning "tradition" in Hebrew, the Kabbalah is claimed to be the word of God, handed down to Adam and Moses, reveals the framework of God and the Creation (the Sephirotic System.)
1.6.2) What are the Dead Sea Scrolls?
The Dead Sea Scrolls were discovered by a shepherd in a cave in Israel, about 1947. They appear to be the earliest records of Jewish scripture. They were kept secret by the Jordanian and Israeli governments until about twenty years ago, when photographs of the scrolls were leaked. Now all the scrolls have been studied and translated and published in an English edition.
Reasons why the scrolls were kept secret vary, but a likely explanation is that the scrolls' contents, written by a Jewish sect after the time of Jesus Christ, may have conflicted with sections of the New Testament.

-- The Dead Sea Scrolls were the product of a small Jewish sect living near the village of Qumran on the western shore of the Dead Sea around the time of Christ. The Scrolls were first discovered by a shepherd in 1947, but additional scrolls continued to be unearthed for the next ten years. As the area came under the control of Jordan after the Israeli war of independence, the scrolls came to be concentrated in the Jordanian Archaeological Museum, where the task of editing them was given to a group of scholars known as the International Team, led by de Vaux. Although publication of the scrolls began in the 1950s, its progress was extremely slow, largely because of the magnitude of the task and lack of funds. At the same time, some editors made unfounded speculations concerning the implications of the scrolls for Christianity, based on the inaccurate assumption that the Qumran sect was related to the early Christian church.
After the six-day war of 1967, the scrolls fell into the hands of the Israeli authorities, who maintianed the status quo with regard to control of the texts. By 1990, matters had reached a head, with many interantional scholars demanding full publications of the scrolls. After a couple of scholars released a partial reconstruction based on a concordance, the Huntingdon library of San Marino, California released a set of microfilms it had which had been deposited in the library back in the 1950s. Soon afterwards further photographs appeared from an anonymous source, and finally, in 1991, the Israeli government released a full set of high-quality photographs.

1.6.7) Who are the Magi?
The Magi are the so-called three wise men from the East, who came to worship the baby Jesus in Bethlehem, following a star that pointed to the place where they could find him. (Matthew 2.1-12) Folklore names the three wise men as Balthasar, Casper and Melchior.
In addition, the Magi also held a high advisory position to the Persian Emperor, during the reign of Cyrus and Cambyses.
1.6.8) What is the Spear of Longinus? (was 5.6)
This is the spear that pierced the side of Christ at the Crucifixion, the wound from which blood and water poured out. Folklore names the soldier that wielded the spear as Longinus.
Like the Holy Grail, the Spear is fabled to wield magical powers, such as the ability to grant victory to anyone who holds it. An Arthurian legend tells about the quest of one of Arthur's knights to find the Spear. It is said that Adolf Hitler was interested in the legend of the Spear (which was held in a museum in Austria.)
1.6.9) Who is Adam, Eve and Lillith?
Adam (man) was the final creation of God, "in his image". Eve (woman) was created to be a companion to Adam, from a piece of Adam's rib. Lillith, according to Jewish folklore, was the first companion of Adam, but would not obey him, and was exiled from the Garden of Eden ("East of Eden"). She apparently became the wife of Cain (son of Adam, who killed his brother, Abel), and gave birth to demons.
The following text is excepted from the Encyclopaedia Americana:
"LILITH, lil'lith, a female demon with origins in
Babylonian, Jewish, and Muslim folklore. In one
tradition she was the first wife of Adam, with
whom she claimed equality because they were
created together. She refused to serve Adam and
was expelled from Eden before God created Eve."
"Lilith was believed to be the queen of demons
and Satan's consort. From her unions with [Satan],
or, in other accounts, with Adam, evil spirits
were born . . . In the guise of a beautiful woman
she had intercourse with men and gave birth to demons."

Recently I came across Lilith:- the "Black Moon" in my research, I'd like to bring it up. Interestingly, we can see that Anno only used what he found from various historical records or knowledge for his creation of EVA world, which also proves that, for instance, Evangelion cannot interpret too much by following one direction or approach such as religions- the quite common approach for viewers to define or explain various things in Evangelion.
Now this is what I've found:-
Lilith, the "black moon", may well be a fiction. It has, after all, only been seen by a few observers and that was in 1618 and 1700. In his Astrologie lunaire, Alexandre Volguine, the founder of the Cahiers astrologiques, studied the influence of Lilith, the "black moon", second satellite of the Earth. Certain astrologers put the occurence of the First World War down to its influence.
>From this, it is not hard to see that, Anno quite surely did came across the "Black Moon" and the mystical name "Lilith" was used in here. Then Anno delibrately called that white giant in terminal dogma "Lilith", and area surrounded it is called "Black Moon", which is the egg of Lilith. based on this assumption, Anno can be said that he was inspired by this piece of astrological fact, and coincidently, he also knew that the name "Lilith" is also a mystical being dated back the time of Genesis, the first wife of Adam and later exiled from Eden. So that, with all this background and cross-over of "Lilith", which forms a fundamental infra-structure for the background of NGE.
Again, Lilith:- the Black Moon, and Lilith:- the first wife of Adam, are two separate, independent, unrelated sources.
1.6.10) What is the seven eyed logo?
It is apparently the "seven eyes of God."
In Revelations, Chapter 5, Verse 6:
And I saw, standing midway between the throne and the four living beings and among the elders, a Lamb as if it had been sacrificed. It had seven horns and seven eyes, which are the seven Spirits of God dispatched over the whole earth.

Marduk is a Babylonian god. According to Babylonian legend, the first human being was created by mixing Marduk's blood with clay.

Marduk is the son of Apsu and Tiamat, the two primordial beings on the Babylonian legend. Apsu was the water and void spirit, and Tiamat the sea and chaos spirit, with the shape of a dragon's shape.
Marduk became the champion of all Gods born by the primordial beings after Apsu was killed by one of Marduk's evil brothers. This caused Tiamat to go crazy. The enormous dragon started to generate scorpion men, demoniac lions, enormous serpents and shining dragons.
To stop her, Marduk took with him a net, a clave, poison (fiala), a bow, arrows and a bag of lightning bolts. He used a chariot pulled by four horses and followed the four winds and a strong tornado.
He captured Tiamat and he cut out her heart and decapitated her. He cut her veins and he divided her body in two parts. From one of these parts he moulded the sky and from the other he moulded the earth. In the sky Marduk raised a shelter for the Gods, and installed the moon and all stars as guardians of time. With one of Tiamat son's blood he made human beings to serve Gods.

Section 2. About EVA's production.
2.0) Gainax, the company that produced it.
Gainax was founded in December, 1984 by Hirouyuki Yamaga, Hideaki Anno, Toshio Okada. It produced The Wings of Honneamise (film), Nadia of the Mysterious Seas/The secret of Blue Water (TV), Over the top!/Gunbuster" (OAV), "Otaku No Video" (OAV). Honneasmise was sponsored by Bandai, which hoped to create a merchandising market using the film. Costing 800 million yen, the film was instead a failure, taking eight years to recoup Bandai's investment. Nadia was broadcast in 1990 on NHK. It then took {how much time} off, and made the Princess Maker series of games. Evangelion is their "returning to anime" work.
2.0A) Is Gainax being investigated by the Japanese Taxation Office?
Is it because of tax fraud?
Yes. In July 1998 investigators from the Japanese Taxation office raided Gainax's offices and the residence of Gainax's president Yamaga. In November 1998 Japanese newspapers reported that Gainax performed tax fraud by transferring funds to other companies, labelling it as different kinds of fees, and then secretly re-depositing it. Gainax appears to have been fined heavily. Newspaper reports specifically listed Gainax as the author of Neon Genesis Evangelion, the cult TV series.
2.1) The sponsors.
Sega Enterprise (the video/console game company) and Kadokawa Shoten (publisher) sponsored the production of EVA. This is probably why the EVA video games to date has only been published on the Sega Saturn. Kadokawa publishes a monthly anime magazine NewType that has quite a lot of EVA coverage, and it also publishes the EVA manga (in the monthly magazine Monthly Shonen A (Ace)) and several EVA books.

2.3) When was Evangelion first broadcast?
Evangelion began broadcast weekly on October 4, 1995, and concluded March 27, 1996. TV Tokyo broadcast the series at 7pm.

His first sole director credit was the OAV series "Top o Nerai Gunbuster" (1988), which he followed up with the successful "Fushigi no Umi no Nadia" (1990), both which he co-wrote.

Gainax is airing a new TV series in the northern Autumn, 1998. Based on the shoujo manga "Kareshi Kanojo no Jijou" (His and Her Reasons), by Masami Tsuda, Anno Hideaki is slated as director. The manga is serialised in "Monthly Lala", and four volumes of compilations have been published.

They were made that way. The English subtitle also serves as an eye-catch and sometimes convey a change in focus for the second half of the episode. It is interesting to note that the two subtitles are not always direct translations of each other. It is also interesting that only in ep.26 there are 2 cuts (versus 1 in the other episodes) for the English subtitle.

... Episode 19 The definition of introjection is a psychoanalysis term meaning "the internalization of the parent figures and their values; leads to the formation of the superego".
Episode 24 The two characters "si-Sya" in the Japanese subtitle is a visual pun to Kaoru's last name, Nagisa. It is also a pun meaning both "Angel" and "Casualty". In detail:
katakana "shi" looks very much like a "sanzui-hen" kanji radical (which basically adds "water-related" meaning to the kanji). Composed with the next kanji "sha" (person), they *look* like ONE kanji "nagisa" (shore).
The English title, "Knockin' on Heaven's Door", is the title of a Bob Dylan song, which was included in the film "Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid".

2.11) How can I see the TV series/films?
In Japan, the series has recently been re-run in the last quarter on 1997. There is no news of any further reruns. LD's, home video tapes and DVD's of the series have been released sporadically, with a likely completion date some time in 1998.
The films have generally completed their theatrical runs, however a movie, "TRUE", was released in the first quarter of 1998, and includes a re-edited version of the "Death" sequence of the first movie. A director's cut of "Death & Rebirth" was shown on Japanese Satellite TV early in January, 1998.
A movie, "Revival", was released on March 7th, 1998, and includes a re-edited version of the "Death" sequence of the first movie "(True)", and comprises of all three segments ("Death (True)", "Rebirth" and "End".) This was shown on Japanese Satellite TV in early February 1999.
The theatrical features will be released in December 1998 in a Movie Version LD Box. In addition, the two parts that comprise "End" will be released in the third quarter of 1998 as part of the TV laser disk release. (see 4.0.1) DVD's of the films was released on September 22, 1999.
In Hong Kong and Singapore the TV series is available on Video Compact Disk. Asia Home TV Channel have purchased the rights to broadcast the series, beginning 28 April 1998, from 22:20 to 23:00 every Saturday. The series has been dubbed by ATV, and two episodes are shown each Saturday. The series has been edited heavily in some episodes (14 & 15). The versions for VCD/pay television and free to air television have different dub castings.
The films have not been shown theatrically, nor have been legally released on the home video/LD market.
In North America and Great Britain home video/LD's of the TV series are available from AD Vision. In North America up to thirteen volumes of the home video tape (26 episodes) have been issued, and two LD's (four episodes). DVD's are planned for a pre-Christmas 1999 release. The TV series has not been broadcast. The films have not been released theatrically. Manga Entertainment have officially announced at Anime Expo 1999 that it has purchased the rights to the films, and it is rumoured that there will be a theatrical release. No date has been annouced for a theatrical nor home video release. (*
In Great Britain as of 1/99 AD Vision (UK) have released up to tape 12.
In Europe (not including Great Britain) the series appears to be released by the Dynamic Planning Inc Japan and the Dynamic Group Companies (Europe), owned by Go Nagai, a famous manga artist.
In France the series has been licensed to Dynamic France. It has been shown on television, the first showing on the CanalSatellite channel "C:", from October 1997 to June 1998. It was shown between 6:30pm to 6:50pm every Saturday, and then repeated at the same hour every day thereafter until the next Saturday. It was broadcast with French subtitles, and omitted the trailers. The second showing was on the pay-for-view channel "Canal+", from October 1998 to June 1999. It was shown at 4:40pm each Wednesday, and replayed on "Canal+ Blue" at 2:30pm every Saturday. It was broadcast in French dubs, and included the trailers. (*
In Italy the series is released by Dynamic Italia, and is licenced from AD Vision. Twelve episodes have been released, two episodes per tape, bi-monthly, with the sixth tape released in September 1999. (*
In Spain the series is released by Manga Films. So far there have been six tapes released, three episodes per tape. Genesis 0:7 was released 21 May. The series will be broadcast on TV on Canal 33, beginning 21 October, at 9:30pm.
In Portugal the series is broadcast on TV as part of a children's show. The series concluded in early June.
In Holland and Belgium the series is released by Dynamic. Each tape contains 3 episodes, and is subtitled in the Dutch language. The price is 34.95 guilders (approximately US$17). The first tape should be available now.
In Germany the series is released by OAV Films and distributed throughout the country by the Anime Connection of Germany (A.C.O.G) under licence from Dynamic Germany. Each boxed set has three tapes, each with two subtitled episodes, and retails for DM79.95 (deluxe edition DM129.95) One volume has been released in December 1998.
In Australasia the series has been licenced to Madman Entertainment. The first tape has been released in October 1998, and regular multiple tape monthly releases until March, 1999. The price is Aus$19.95 (dubbed)/$29.95 (subbed).
2.11.1) Will AD Vision change episodes 25 and 26?
At a panel at the Animazement 1998 convention, where the final four episodes of the TV series were shown, representatives indicated that AD Vision will release the series as broadcast on Japanese television. In addition, AD Vision has no plans to release an English edition of the Japanese LD's of Genesis 0:11 and 0:12, which have additional and/or altered scenes, although it has indicated an interest in doing so.
2.11.1A) Will Manga Entertainment release the films? (*
At Anime Expo 1999 Manga Entertainment announced it had negotiated with Gainax for the rights to produce an english version of the Evangelion movies. In further developments, Manga has apparently negotiated with most of the AD Vision voice actors on the series to reprise their roles for the films. (*
In mid-November 1998 AD Vision officially announced that it had no further interest in releasing the Evangelion theatrical features.
2.11.2) Will MTV broadcast Evangelion?
It had been rumoured that MTV had obtained the rights to broadcast the TV series on cable television. In a statement from AD Vision, a spokesman reiterated that AD Vision hold *all* North American rights to Evangelion, and that MTV had no plans whatsoever to broadcast the TV series.
2.11.3A) Will the Japanese release of Genesis 0:11 have extra scenes?
According to Carl Horn, editor of the Viz edition of the Neon Genesis Evangelion comics book, the Japanese release of Genesis 0:11 will have extra scenes included. The scenes that are reputed to be included include a scene with Kaji Ryouji and Asuka Langley, and a scene with Fuyutsuki Kouzou and Ikari Yui. This information was gathered either from the February issue of Animage or Newtype. (This information was gleaned from rec.arts.anime.misc)
The following information was contributed by "George Chen" <george at netobjects.com> -- A while back when 0:11 just came out I think someone had already made a short review and I'm just gonna put in some other observations:
Before the episode 21 starts there are about full 3 mins. of still/animations which portrait the interior of some UN lab @ South Pole. You can hear Gendo's techno-babble in the background which I think is right before the time which 2nd Impact was about to happen. The last cut of the scene is the white light giant then cut straight to a blue screen with the UN logo top secret babble. VERY COOL stuff. It kinda set-up like the FBI copy write warning which give you the impression of watch some old UN archive at NERV library. Again, very cool stuff. ^_^
I am also surprise that there are a lot of extra Yui scenes which some of us can gain more knowledge about Yui and HCP. Obviously missing (from TV) is the one which Fuyutsuki ran into Yui right outside of the UN Artificial Human Evolution Research Lab (my translation there)... Yui was very much surprised that Fuyutsuki showed up (Fuyutsuki was supposed to confront Gendo about 2nd Impact).
New scenes in episode 22 include a scene which Asuka standing *naked* in the bathroom and said, "kimochi warue!" Actually, I think that is the only full-body naked scene of Asuka in the series so far. Turns out Asuka got pissed-off at herself and kicking things around in the bathroom. Asuka forever!!! ^_^;
Also a dream like sequence of Asuka at some train station (wearing plug-suit) going against the flow of people....
The mind-attck of 15th Angel is also slight enhanced. Now we can actually see Asuka going through the whole process which is VERY VERY similar to what Shinji went through in episode 26. We see Asuka takes on a different attitude and letting the outside world perceive her differently . Again, very very similar to what Shinji experienced in 26. (I recognized that some cut scenes here are also being used in EOE also)
Spear of Longinus also look slightly different when it piece through 15th Angel's AT field. The spare actually expand a little which looks a lot more powerful to previous TV version...Also, when Unit 00 pull the spare out of Lilith, the legs of Lilith of started to grow right away--which I don't remember seeing in the fan sub. -- (Text by "George Chen" <george at netobjects.com>)

There's scenes in 22's "introspective" portion(tm) where Asuka is walking through an empty trainyard and suddenly finds herself struggling upstream through a crowd of hooded figures. One takes its hood off and all of a sudden she's lost in a sea of red psychedelia. I'm probably not describing it well enough, it's a very nicely done scene. Another that might be new is a scene where the ghostly image of herself as a young girl approaches her as she huddles in a playground and says something(damn I need to learn Japanese!), Which Asuka lashes out at. The ghost dissolves away, almost exploding from the impact of her words. Looks like I'll be getting the AD Vision version just so I can see what's missing from it. ^_^ -- Footage of her ripping the dress open, along with the cells from her introducing herself to her classmates, one of her many "Anta Baka?" scenes, and her saying "Chance!" in a rather evil looking manner are used repeatedly by the angel to throw the strong facade she has created right back in her face. It is reported that a Panasonic DVD sample disk contains about five minutes from the first episode of Evangelion, with subtitles in English, French, Spanish, Mandarin Chinese, Russian, etc. It is NOT for sale.
2.11.6) Will Australian TV broadcast Evangelion?
Yes. The Special Broadcasting Service (SBS-TV) are broadcasting the TV series, starting Saturday 2nd January 1999, in a hourly format (two episodes.) As of the week starting on 4 October, SBS-TV have begun showing 30 second promotions, one with OP music, and one with Beethoven's 'Ode of Joy'. SBS-TV by tradition shows only dubbed anime.
2.11.7) Have the eyecatches (or titles) at the centre of each episode released in Great Britain and Australasia been edited out?
Yes. Due to BBFC (British Broadcasting Film Classification) regulations, AD Vision have had to excise the eye catches out. As Australasian editions are sourced from the British edition, the eyecatches are also excised from that edition also (broadcast and video releases).

Section 3. Details
3.0) What is the first impact?
According to the textbook with which Shinji and his classmates study the history, the First Impact is the collision of a meteorite with the Earth which caused the moon to be separated from the Earth.
3.1) What is the plug suit for?
It increases the pilot's synchronization with an EVA. The only necessary thing for a pilot to wear in order to pilot an EVA is the hairclip-like thing on his/her hair. So we see the children pilot the EVAs in their street clothes or school uniforms in several episodes. In episode 13 we see them test-synchronizing nude.
3.2) Why has Gendou changed his last name?
Gendou married into his wife's family, taking up her family's name instead of vice versa. This sometime happens in Japanese society and especially if the wife's family is of a higher social standing or wealthier than the husband's ("Gyaku Tama no Koshi" (marry a woman of wealth)). Another situation is when the wife has no brothers to carry on the family name.
This explanation is supplied by Bochan Bird <mmk at gol.com> -- Well, this is also one reason, but the Japanese that are that interested in status (caste), are a rather small group at the top. Also, the family has the status, not the male or the female.
First, let me state that when a Japanese couple gets married, one or the other 'must' adopt the family name of the other. While currently the subject of much debate, there is no system where the wife (or husband as the case may be) gets to keep her (his) old name.
Next, there are a number of reasons why a man would take his wife's family name, including:
1. The status issue indicated above. (rare)
2. The wife's family name is 'better' or 'luckier'. (also rare)
3. The wife's family had no sons and the wife is either the eldest daughter, or the daughter that will take over the household upon her parent's death. In this case, the husband is usually the second, third or later son in his family. (This is quite common, but has been running into problems lately due to Japan's extremely low birthrate: with less than 1.5 kids per couple, currently 70% of all younger Japanese are the eldest or only child.)
4. The husband wants to erase all ties with his former life and 'start over'. (Although rare, this is probably the reason I would choose for Gendo.) An interesting tidbit regarding Japan's legal system: If a person changes their name, obligations on the previous name (debts, etc.) become extremely difficult to collect on. It is as if the previous person has ceased to exist and a new person has been created. For this reason it is sometimes done for symbolic purposes - ie: to emphasize a new start.
I'm sure there are also other reasons, but I can't think of any off the top of my head. (Incidentally, when a Japanese person marries a foreigner, they get to choose whether or not to change their name - because the foreigner doesn't have a family register in Japan.) --

3.3) What gender are the EVAs?
This is subject to debate. The gender of the EVAs are not made explicit during the series. Ritsuko said (trying to avoid spoilers) a line that contains the word "she" in ep.19, and a lot of people takes this to mean that EVA-01 is female. However the rest of the time she, and everybody else, refers to the EVAs as "EVA", so the line in question is most likely refering to somebody else (who that is is another spoiler). To further confuse matters, Kaoru also said a line with "her" in ep.24, probably refering to EVA-02.
In addition, Ritsuko and Misato refer to EVA-03 as a "him".
3.4) Are the characters named after Japanese Navy warships?
It appears so; names can be matched to World War II Imperial Japanese Navy ships or classes of ships. Here is a list of names and the corresponding ships or classes of ship:

It appears that Suzuhara Touji and Aida Kensuke are the names of the two main characters in Ryu Murakami's novel, Fascism of Love and Fantasy (its original title is Ai to gensou no fascism.) The theme of fascism and criticism of fascism underlies both novel and possibly Evangelion.
Hikari Horaki's sisters (Nozomi, Kodama and including Hikari) are named after three services on the Shinkansen railway network.
The Hebrew word for God, "Elohim", as used in the original text of Genesis (and used in the Tree of the Sephiroth shown in the opening credits) is both a feminine and plural noun. "Rei" is also feminine and plural.
3.4.2) Is Kaworu spelt with or without a "w"?
The AD Vision edition spells his name "Kaoru", partly because it is spelt that way in the animation of 25. The following text by Patrick Yip attempts to clear the origin of the name.

I was flipping through the old Japanese classics "Genji Monogatari" (Tale of Genji) the other day. It's been quite some time since I looked at the final part of this monumental work, and I found that the name of the hero in this part of the story is "Kaworu"!!
I did some more research on this name. These are the facts about "Kaworu" that I find out:
- The reason why "Kaworu" is written with a "wo" character is probably influenced by classics work like "Genji Monogatari". In the Heian ages and medieval period, "wo" and "o" were quite separate words. At that time "Kaworu" was indeed written with "wo" character. The two characters merged in their pronounciation in the Edo period and thus created the confusion as to why "Kaworu" should have a "wo" character. It is possible that some Japanese may not even know this, and it has become common practice to write "Kaoru". This creates more confusion.
- "Kaworu" is a serious but also romantic hero in the last third of the Tale of Genji. And literally the kanji for "Kaworu" means fagrance (of incence wood). Indeed in Tale of Genji, Kaworu was born with a very special bodily feature: His body bore a sweet fagrance smell. So the name "Kaworu" is commonly related to the idea of intelligent, handsome and romantic hero.
- And one more striking thing. "Kaworu" can be a girl's name as well!! This adds to the ambiguity of sex implicated by this name. Put it into the context that Kaworu is an epitome of shoujo-anime bishounen (handsome boy) with ambiguous sexuality. Now it seems to me that Gainax actually put some thought in choosing his name.

3.5) Is the term "Children" a deliberate use?
Evangelion pilots are referred to singly as "Children"; eg. Shinji is the "Third Children" (see 5.11 for spoiler information)
3.6) What is the structure of "Death"?
DEATH the movie can be divided into five parts, with four interludes. The four interludes combine to form the "quartet" section.
1. The prelude
(2nd Impact and Misato, Asuka's first appearance, Shinji's first appearance, Kaworu's death)

The quartet is purported to take place 18 months before Kaworu's death. As I said before, the time-scale is simply impossible to have Kaworu playing in the quartet. But since GAINAX really wanted to use Kaworu, so they did some tricks to the fourth part of the "quartet":
We can only see the shadow, hear the guy say "Ah-ha sorry sorry", then see his legs and that's it! We can only tell it is Kaworu by his voice. I think
GAINAX did not really need to do this. Why can't Touji play violin? I think
GAINAX still has its mind fixed by stereotypes, or they don't want to face fans which see things in stereotypes. Oh well, anyway...

Here is the only part in the "quartet" section that has more than one line of conversation. So I translate them all, for the benefit of all Shinji x Asuka fans ^_^

Asuka: Oh. That's easy for you. You only need to do the arpeggio

Kaworu finally arrives. We only see his shadow (actually for all the other three, we never get to see their faces either, but at least we could see their bodies). Asuka said "You are laaaate!" Kaworu jokingly said "Ah-ha sorry sorry". Somebody said "Let's begin" Another said "Un". And they start playing Pachebel's Canon.

3.7) What is LCL?
Evangelion pilots are immersed in a fluid that allows the direct supply of oxygen into their lungs. This is known as LCL, and this technology is available in real life:
Perfluorides -- medical molecules for the future?
Perfluorocarbons (PFC) are linear or cyclic organic compounds in which hydrogen atoms have been subsituted by fluorine atoms. The strong carbon-flurorine bond gives PFCs outstanding thermal and chemical stabilty. So far, the most common use of these is as 'blood subsitutes'. One of the most striking properties of PFCs is that they can dissolve very large volumes of the respiratory gases oxygen and carbon dioxide. Although in a pure form they are immiscible with blood and aqueous solutions, they can be emulsified and mixed with blood.
Well, that is at least the introduction to PFCs. As it of now, it is now used in hospitals readily for balloon-angioplasty operations and for infants without fully developed lungs.

In addition, Oxygenated Liquid Hydrocarbons is a liquid similar to Perfluorocarbons that is used as a substitute for oxygen mixes in diving equipment. As yet it's still in the experimental stage. It would be used in situations where deep sea diving would be necessary. Oxygen as a gas in conditions of high pressure would be dangerous to the breather. Such conditions would exist deep under the sea. LCL would be substituted for oxygen.
LCL in real life could cause damage to the throat after emptying due to coughing out the fluid. Treatment would require immediate application of an oyxgen mask. In addition LCL would take several days to empty completely out of the lungs.

(* In ep.1 Misato makes her first appearance driving a Renault Alpine A310 (third version of a model introduced in 1982 and retired in 1994, this one is also known as "model GT-4", and has a wider chassis than pervious versions). This version has beeen modified with an electric engine and has the driver's place at the rigth side as Japanes cars have. However, in ep.4 Misato runs to the Railway Station to see Shinji in _another_ Alpine A310, with the same blue color, but with the original gas engine and driver's place to the left. In ep.7, Misato reaches Shinji's school in a red (with black soft top) Ferrari 328 GTS (production date 1985, 3184,96 cc 4 valve V8 (90° V) cylinder engine). This sample has the driving place to the right, Japanese way. Even if not one of the most expensive Ferraris, it undoubtely is much more than the A310.

When he's involved in the ensuing battle between Eva-01 and the 4th angel, right before the Eva plunges in the hillside where he and Kensuke are standing, it briefly changes to FILA.
Shimorak milk, episode 6. (* In the tray Rei uses to bring Shinji some meal while he's in the ospital, a 300 ml. pack of Shimorak milk can be seen. The Shimorak brand exists in real world.
The coffee machine at NERV: The coffee machine is an exact replica of the one that was present at Gainax studios at the time of the production of the series.
The newspaper Maiasa Shinbun, episode 7: The name of the Maiasa Shinbun (lit. "the newspaper of all mornings") that is used to show the official version of the reasons for Second Impact) is most probably the fusion of the names of two existing newspapers, the MAInichi Shinbun ("the newspaper of all days") and the ASAhi Shinbun ("the newspaper of the Rising Sun"). The head office address is the same of Gainax's.
Ikuhara Industries, episode 7: Among the flower wreaths offered by firms invited to the Jet Alone presentation, one is by "Ikuhara Electronic Systems". Kunihiko Ikuhara is the name of a young director famous for working in various series and the second movie of the anime TV series Sailor Moon, and he's a friend of director of Evangelion Hideaki Anno.
"This is Adam, this is the first human being", episode 8: The line by Gendou Ikari (possibly slightly different from my translation from Italian) that closes his encounter with Ryouji Kaji in episode 8 is exactly the same of that by the cruel Gargoyle character from Fushiji no Umi no Nadia - The Secret of Blue Water series, also by Gainax (episode 37).
The walls of Jerico, episode 9: The last night before the Synchro battle, Shinji and Asuka are alone at home together because Misato has work to do at NERV. After teasing him about the matter, Asuka moves her futon from the living room to Misato's bedroom, and warns him that the sliding doors are "the indestructible walls of Jerico".
This is a quote from the movie "It Happened One Night" (USA, 1934), by Frank Capra. The episode quoted is the night that the two main characters, Peter Warne (Clark Gable) and Ellie Andrews (Claudette Colbert), spend in the same hotel room. They divide the two beds hanging a blanket on a rope in the mid, and defining it as "The Walls of Jerico".
The reference in the movie is to the Biblical episode of the capture of the city of Jerico by Joshua and the people of Israel, because God wanted so. The supposedly indestructible walls of Jerico were destroyed thanks to the sound made by seven ram horns. Joshua, under the order of God, circled the walled city for seven days and seven nights, after which the walls collapsed, and the Hebrew army could invade.
Studio Fantasia, Shinji Higuchi, Episode 9: In the first attack to the seventh angel, Eva 02 jumps over and destroys an abandoned building on the Suruga coast with a sign on top that says "Studio Fantasia". The name and the logo on the sign belong to an animation studio involved as associate productor in the Gainax OAV series "Otaku no Video". In this series' credits appears the name of the same Shinji Higuchi that is responsible for the story boards of episode 9 of Eva, something visible in the humorous situations and the generally bright atmosphere of the episode, relatively uncharacteristic for the rest of the series.
Kermadec-3 thermoresistant deep probe, episode 10: The Kermadec-3 probe owes the name to the existing oceanic fault of Kermadec. The same fault was present in the TV series Fushigi no Umi no Nadia - The Secret of the Blue Water. In episodes 20-21, the Nautilus submarine sinks in the Kermadec-Tonga Fault. (*
ICC Ice coffee, episode 11. (* At the beginning of the episode, Shigeru Aoba buys from a vending machine an ICC Ice coffee can. It is an old model of can by UCC, a real world company that more than one year later would've bought the rights to use Eva charactrers to put on their cans. Similar UCC cans appear in first episode of Gainax's Top wo Nerae! - Gunbuster anime series, in the main character Notiko Takaya's room. The realistic vending machine is found in Gunbuster too.
Scientific Omnipotence, episode 11. (* Maya Ibuki's line about scientific omnipotence after learning that Neo Tokyo-3 is actually governed by the Magi's decisions is considered an antiquate sentence by Shigeru. It surely is an antiquate line since it can be found spoken by Jean in The Secret of Blue Water (1988 by Gainax).
Nozoku Takahashi, episode 11. (* During the episode, a van used for propaganda by the candidate for elections on the city council Nozoku Takahashi can be seen many times. The name is an homage to Nozomu Takahashi, producer of Studio Ghibli (authors of many anime, most recently Mononoke Hime). Studio Ghibli has done the drawings for this episode as it can be seen by the style of drawing of the female speaker onboard the van. Nozomu Takahashi has also been publisher of the Japanese magazine Animage.
Episode 11 had some scenes cut. The situation of Misato and Kaji remanining trapped in the lift should have led to an attempt at a serious dialogue from him and a denial from her. Also, Shigeru's appearance with the guitar at the beginning should have introduced a scene at the end of the episode where the 3 children who are watching the stars on a hill should've met him and he'd start playing it, in a 'sitting around the campfire' situation. Asuka's sundress is the only piece of clothing any character wears anytime to have been personally creatd by Yoshiyuki Sadamoto, character design of the series. Her swimsuit is by Takeshi Honda, drawer of the covers (among other things). (*

3.8.2) Space: 1999
Space: 1999 was a space opera of the seventies, produced by Gerry Anderson, creator of the Thunderbirds and Captain Scarlet. It's about the adventures of the inhabitants of a moonbase, when Earth's moon is torn from orbit by a cataclysmic disaster.
The date of the disaster was September 13, 1999. In Evangelion the Second Impact occurs exactly one year later. (This date is also noted as a "future" event in Gainax's second Otaku no Video OAV.)
3.8.3) The Day The Earth Stood Still
The Day The Earth Stood Still is a classic 1950's science fiction film, about the first contact between humans and the representative of a community of worlds. Reaction of the humans is riddled with suspicion and paranoia, and the alien represenative has to prove his strength by draining energy from everything in Washington DC, making "the Earth Stand Still".
In episode 11, The Day Tokyo-3 Stood Still, the whole of NERV, located in the geofront beneath Tokyo-3 loses power mysteriously. The original title had to be "Panic in Geo Front", as in the original storyboard.
3.8.4) The Violent History Of the Showa Era: The Final Battle Of
Okinawa
According to Protoculture Addicts Issue 49 (a Canadian anime news magazine) the film Death & Rebirth was heavily influenced by a story, "The Violent History Of the Showa Era: The Final Battle Of Okinawa", about the World War II battle of Okinawa. The battle itself was very brutal.
3.8.5) Cordwainer Smith and the Instrumentality Project
Cordwainer Smith (real name Paul Linebarger), wrote a series of stories about the Instrumentality of Mankind. In the series, a house of immortal nobles guided a society grown stagnant. The sacrifice of a few of the society brought chaos and began regeneration.
The series has strong religious overtones, and Smith apparently had a background in China.
3.8.6) Yashima (episode 5 & 6)

Operation Yashima takes its name from the Yashima Battle, year one of the Bunji era (1185), during the Genpei wars. According to the legend, during the battle, the samurai Yoichi Nasuno ( aka Nasu no Yoichi), while riding his horse in the water, hit the red fan of his enemy Tamamushi with an arrow from long distance, thus resolving the battle. Analogy with the Yashima operation is evidently the need for an accurate long distance shot (from behind 'the water' of lake Ashino) to resolve the battle. Moreover, Yashima, written with different characters, can be read as "the eight countries", an ancient way to call the entirety of Japan. Though confirmation is not given, an analogy between this and the need to use the energy of the entire Japan to feed the positron rifle can also be considered appropriate.
3.9) Who are the other members of Seele?
The names of the persons seen during the meetings of Gendou with Seele are not known, but their countries of citizenship can be identified.
Keel Lorenz (German): The only man named. France: Bespectacled slightly balding man with long thin nose. England: Large chinned, full head of hair. USA: Bald, with broad nose. Russia: permed hair, large broad nose, moustache, dark complexion.

3.10) How big are the Eva Units?
The Eva Units are about 60 to 65 metres high. This is extrapolated from measurements of the Over The Rainbow and the Kentucky and Illinois (aircraft carrier and battleships respectively), and of measurements of the flying wing and Gaghiel, bot of which use a Eva figure for scale. 3.11) What are the Pattern types?
NERV staff use different colour codes to differenciate between different types of threats. The codes are also known as blood types.)
Blue- Angel Orange- Unknown, no AT field detected (first appeared during 12th Angel's attack)
There is a third type, Green, which apparently appears on the Children's files.
3.12) The different departments of NERV
These are the different departments mentioned in the series:
Operations (at least two sections); Technology (four sections, the third devoted to "electro-magnetic and light wave weapon development"); Public Affairs Security (at least two sections); Engineering; and Special Affairs.
3.13) What is the Henflick limit?
It is the maximum damage beyond which it becomes prohibitively expensive to repair an EVA unit. That limit is reached in episode 19, where two EVA units are extensively damaged, and funding to repair the units is taken from EVA building, forcing the cancellation of two EVA units.
There is also a similarily named term, the Hayflick Limit, to which is may also refer to. The limit refers to the finite number of times cells of higher-order organisms may divide before the cell becomes too "old" to divide. The significance of this is that Evangelions are not "repaired", like a mechanical object, such as a vehicle, but instead healed or regenerated. There is a limit to the chemistry of the biomechanics of an Evangelion unit can be treated by NERV, which gives new significance to the use of the "spare parts" that were used from Evangelion Units 5 and 6.
3.14) Is that Real Beer that Misato Drinks?
Yes and no. One brand that Misato drinks is Yebisu, which is definitely a real beer. However, after complaints by the brewers, in episode 2 the name was changed to "Yebichu", which may also be a homage to a manga series, "Oruchuban Yebichu".
According to Carl Horn the brand name was retracted because the TV network which broadcast the series objected because the brewers of "Yebisu" did not advertise with them, and didn't want to give the brewers free publicity!
The other is Boa, which appears to be a homage to the anime film "Sora Tobu Yuurei Sen" (1969). In this film Boa juice is a highly addictive and poisonous beverage.
3.15) What is "fan service"?
Generally speaking, "fan service" are shots of a light sexual nature, nothing usually more than brief flashes of cleavage or nudity. This includes shots from above of well endowed female characters, shots of buttocks (clothed or otherwise), etc. Normally this is restricted to female characters, but male characters can be "service" subjects.
3.16) Which Identities of Naoko Akagi are in the MAGI?
In episode 13 Ritsuko refers to each of the three MAGI Supercomputers as having an identity of her mother and the creator of the MAGI, Dr. Naoko Akagi. This means that their logic circuits (for want of a better term) follow a prescribed or programmed behaviour, and make decisions according to that behaviour.

Yes. The ship is the USS Harry S. Truman, which entered service with the US Atlantic Fleet on April 25, 1998. Presumably the name change was acquired when it was attached to the UN Pacific Fleet, and tasked to deliver Unit-02 to Japan (as seen in episode 8)

The Merchandising FAQ (also known as the EVA MFAQ) was created on March 22, 1999.) This section had become the largest sized section in the Evangelion English Mailing List FAQ (known as the FAQ) and was separated to create its own document.

5.0.1) Is the Instrumentality of Mankind Third Impact?
What was to be achieved by Seele and by NERV/Gendou appear to be two different things. Throughout the series there are many examples where Seele is dissatisfied with the progress and performance of NERV and Gendou. What is certainly known is that during the TV series Instrumentality is part of the tasks alloted to NERV.
In the TV series it was never explained what Seele's ultimate objective is. In the films the objective appears to force the Third Impact, by force if not via the cooperation of NERV, by using EVA and the Spear of Longinus. Seele seeks to force the evolution of man by destroying mankind. Gendou has an alternate method of forcing Third Impact, through Lilith and Rei. Both seem at cross purposes to Complementation, as shown on TV episodes 25 & 26, especially with the conclusion of of the films.
The following is an explanation of what the Complementation of the Instrumentality of Man is.

What was sought to be achieved was Complementation by the Instrumentality of Man (see TV episode 25). The Complementation was to be the filling of the vacuum in our minds to remove anxiety and fear. This would be done by removing AT Fields so that people could openly discuss and master their fears (as is seen in TV episodes 25 & 26 by Misato et al guiding Shinji to his revelation). Thus, "Complementation" was to be achieved through the means or "Instrumentality of (open discussion with) Man". Hope you can all understand that - I didn't explain it well. That's how I see it anyway.

5.1) Who is Yui, and what is her connection to EVA-01? (ep.21)
Ikari Yui is Shinji's mother. In ep.21 we learned she was a student in the University where Fuyutsuki worked as a Professor. She was a test pilot of EVA-01, and died while in an experiment involving it. ("As I wished," said Naoko, Ritsuko's mother and inventor of MAGI.) No detail of the accident is told. However in ep.20 Ritsuko said she didn't invent the pilot salvage process (concerning the 400% synchro incident), that it was used 10 years ago but failed. Combine with the fact that Shinji has lived away from Gendou for 10 years, there is a strong hint that Yui was absorbed into EVA-01 much like what happened to Shinji in ep.20.
There are other hints to this end; EVA-01 has moved several times by itself, without external power, to protect Shinji. In the manga, Shinji encounters an unknown female figure while unconcious in EVA-01.
There was some suspicion after the disapperance of Yui that her husband may have intentionally caused her death: in Ep. 21 newspaper headlines are shown.

5.2) What happened to Shinji when he was small? (ep.21)
He witnessed Yui's fatal accident, and "ran away" from NERV and his father. Probably as a result of this and Yui's death, Rei is recruited as a pilot. In the earlier episodes he has no recollection of this. We were made to assume that Gendou abandoned him to work on his project. Shinji finally remembers in ep.(20? 21?).
I don't think this justifies what Gendou does to his son, but that's a different question.
5.3) What happened to Asuka's parents? (ep.22)
Her mother got into an accident while test piloting an EVA (EVA-02?) and become insane. She thought a doll was Asuka and ignored the real Asuka. She was shown to have "killed" the doll and then committed suicide in ep.22, which Asuka discovered. As a result, Asuka hates dolls and Rei, who she thinks is passive "like a doll".
There are several hints that Asuka's mother suffered the same fate as Yui Ikari, that is she was also absorbed in the same type of experiment, but in her case was retrieved, but went insane. In the films it is shown that she "exists" in Eva Unit-02.
Asuka's father remarried and her step mom gave her a call from Germany in ep.22.
5.4) What is the big deal about Rei? (major spoiler ep.23, 24)
Rei is a clone, in the sense that there are multiple copies of her body. She is probably cloned from Yui Ikari (the RCB states that Rei was derived from the remains of Yui after the accident in 2005), and Lillith, the being crucified in the Terminal Dogma. She was said to process some Angel-like characteristics: She has red eyes, and Kaoru said to her "We are alike." in ep.24. It was hinted that she generated an A.T.Field in ep.24. She was somehow connected with Yui: They look alike, which Naoko noticed in ep.23, and Shinji commented "I feel she is like (a) mother" in ep.?? and again "so, that feeling was right after all" in ep.23.
The only people who definitely knew, prior to ep.23, was Gendou, Ritsuko, and Maya (hence her comment of dummy plugs being "inhumane" in episode 14). Fuyutsuki probabaly knows also.
Rei is instrumental to the completion of Gendou's plans in the films. Gendou planned to unite Rei, Lilith- and himself- to complete his version of the Third Impact. Instead, Rei rejected Gendou and unites with Lilith alone, becoming a deity, and giving Shinji the option to decide.
There is only 1 "operational" Rei in any given moment in the TV series. The rest of the bodies are said (by Ritsuko in ep.23) to possess no "soul" and are just "spare parts" to the dummy plugs and the real Rei. It seems that it is possible to transfer her soul to another body in the event of her death, which happened twice in the series.
The first Rei was killed (strangled) by Naoko. The incident was shown in ep.21.
The second Rei sacrificed herself to save Shinji in ep.23.
5.5) Why is everybody talking about the last two episodes?
(ep.25 & 26)
Mostly likely that it did not make a satisfying ending and it confused many viewers. It did not give much of a conclusion just a lot of philsophy.
Of course, some people liked 25 & 26.
5.7) What is LCL?
LCL, the fluid that Evangelion pilots breath whilst in the entry plug, is the liquid that issues out of Lillith. According to End Of Evangelion, when the Third Impact takes place, human matter dissolves into LCL. This, of course, brings up several interpretations of what LCL is, something that is beyond the charter for the FAQ.

5.8.1) Is the RCB Evangelion Canon?
The RCB is produced and edited by Studio Yuu under the supervision of Gainax/EVA Production Committee. Studio Yuu is listed in End of Evangelion as Promotion Assitance, and the copyright to RCB is owned by of Gainax/EVA Production Committee. It's a fair guess that the RCB can be considered as canon.
5.9) Why does Rei's image appear in front of Shinji in episode 1?
This appers early on in the episode. Shinji has just arrived in Tokyo-3, just as the population has retreated to shelters as the Third Angel attacks. As Shinji tries to ring Misato and find out why she isn't there to pick him up, he turns and sees Rei's image suddenly appear. He turns away momentarily, and when he turns back, it's gone.
This incident is never referred to again in the series, leaving this a true mystery.
At the end of the film End of Evangelion Rei appears in the same way that she appeared at the beginning of the TV series; in other words, she is the Beginning and the End, the Alpha and the Omega.
5.10) Why does Shinji's Plug Suit appear when he disappears completely into EVA Unit 1 in episode 20?
When Shinji disappears into EVA Unit 1 (episodes 19/20) he's wearing his school uniform. Later on in 20, his plug suit appears. Some have considered this to be a continuity error on the part of Gainax. The following line is the only piece of information that refers directly to plug suits:
Ritsuko: All of the materials which formed Shinji-kun are kept in the plug. What is called his soul exits there. In fact, his ego image gives pseudosubstance to his plugsuit.
An interpretation of this line means that when a pilot operates an EVA Unit, his or her body can disintegrate. The plug suit is used to keep the physical body together so that the pilot can be retrieved intact.
It can be then surmised that the plan to retrieve Shini involves collecting his substance and reordering it using the plug suit.
Patrick Yip <Patrick.Yip at ing-barings.com> has noted though that the line spoken by Ritsuko does not exist in the original script. It has been theorised that there was an error of animation continuity which was caught before the episode was completed. The line was included to explain the inconsistency.
Bochan Bird <mmk at gol.com> theorises that Shinji's physical form was instead turned into LCL. If this is true, then his clothes were also absorbed (it's not seen in the plug.)
In End of Evangelion, when people are turning into LCL near the end of the film, their clothes are left behind!
Now to err once could be explained as a mistake; to make the same mistake twice (albeit from different directions) could be construed as carelessness. Whilst the LCL theory seems viable it would seem that the reasons why Shinji is absorbed in 20 and why people turn into LCL are both different; having made a mistake with one set of continuity why would Gainax make it again in the film.
5.11) Is the term "Children" a deliberate use?
According to a Evangelion date/address book, as Rei was not one child, but several identical clone children, she was referred to as the "First Children." It is surmised that to protect/hide this information, following Evangelion pilots were referred to as the "n-th Children".
