First Lieutenant Shigeru Aoba is one of the three main computer technicians at NERV HQ, along with Makoto Hyuga and Maya Ibuki.

Aoba is an avid guitar player, and has been seen carrying a guitar case when in civilian life. Even in NERV HQ, Aoba has been seen to play air guitar when he is not on duty, as well as read guitar magazines.

Aoba is a bit of a nihilist and a little cynical, although he gets along well with his co-workers, particularly Maya and Makoto. During the JSSDF's invasion of NERV HQ, Shigeru remains calm and detached and fires back on advancing enemy soldiers, while Maya balks at the idea of shooting another human being.

During Third Impact, the Rei/Lilith being appears to everyone around the world as a person they love or care about. Curiously, however, Rei/Lilith does not appear as anyone to Shigeru. Instead, a wall of dozens of naked avatars of Rei descend upon Aoba as he cowers in terror under his desk, until one touches him, forcibly turning him into LCL, implying that there is no one that Shigeru truly loved or trusted.
