The United Nations Pacific Fleet is seen escorting Eva-02 (And secretly transporting the Adam embryo as well) from Sasebo to New Odawara in Episode 08, where it suffers severe losses during the attack of the Sixth Angel, Gaghiel.

While real-world United Nations forces are actually under the control of their member nations and not directly under the U.N., it is not clear if this is the case in Neon Genesis Evangelion post-Second Impact. Although the warships of the Pacific Fleet are referred to by the countries that built them, as evidenced in Episode 14, the Fleet as a whole appears to be in the command of the U.N. itself. The Commanding Officer of the Aircraft Carrier Over the Rainbow refers to the fleet as the "U.N. Navy". The real CVN-75, the Nimitz class carrier Harry S. Several large warships are present, including four American Iowa-class Battleships, at least one Kirov-class Battlecruiser, an Admiral Kuznetsov-class Aircraft Carrier and multiple Nimitz-class Aircraft Carriers. Smaller vessels include Oliver Hazard Perry class Frigates and Alreigh Burke/Kongo class Guided Missile Destroyers. Although some vessels carry their old names (Kirov is unusual in retaining its Soviet name, considering it had been renamed Admiral Ushakov after the fall of the Soviet Union), most have been renamed, such as the Over the Rainbow itself (Formerly USS Harry S. The United Nations Pacific Fleet

Episode 08 Pacific Fleet

USS Harry S. Truman

Renamed "Over the Rainbow".

USS Harry S. Truman is the eighth Nimitz-class supercarrier of the United States Navy, named after the 33rd President of the United States. Officially commissioned on July 25, 1998, President Bill Clinton was the keynote speaker of the commissioning ceremony. Based in Norfolk, Virginia (As of this writing), she has won several awards, including three Battle E awards, and has taken part in numerous exercises and operations including participating in five weeks of relief efforts in the Gulf Coast following the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

CBGN Kirov

(Seen on display.) Project 1144 Orlan, known in the west as the Kirov-class battlecruiser, consists of the four largest and most powerful missile cruisers ever built, presently the largest and most powerful surface warships in the world apart from Aircraft Carriers. Classified as "heavy missile cruisers" in Russia and "Battlecruisers" in the west (The misnomer was adapted due to their size and armament), the appearance of these vessels was a factor in the reintroduction of the Iowa class in the 1980s.

Powered by two nuclear reactors with auxiliary steam propulsion, they carry twenty massive SS-N-19 "Shipwreck" Anti-Ship missiles, and an assortment of other weapons and electronics. Weapons layouts vary from ship to ship. At present, the surviving vessels have their condition threatened by poor maintenance and a lack of funding.

Iowa class

(Never-completed Illinois and Kentucky used to destroy Gaghiel.)

The Iowa-class battleships were the last battleships built by the United States Navy, and the most technologically advanced battleships ever made, more powerful than all but the Japanese Yamato class. Originally planned as a class of six battleships, only four were built, with the other two, Illinois and Kentucky, scrapped while still incomplete(Kentucky was to be a missile battleship if completed).

Serving mostly as antiaircraft screens for Aircraft Carriers and shore bombardment platforms, the Iowas were mothballed after World War Two, brought back into action during the Korean War and then mothballed again. In 1968, New Jersey was briefly recommissioned and brought into the Vietnam War. In the 1980s, the class was recommissioned again under Ronald Reagan's 600-ship Navy initiative to fulfil the offshore bombardment role and provide a foil to the Kirov class. They were heavily modernized and fitted out with electronic warfare systems, Phalanx CIWS, Harpoon anti-ship and Tomahawk cruise missiles. Decommissioned for good in the early 1990s, the last two Iowas were removed from the mothball fleet for good in 2006.

CVG Kuznetsov

(Kuznetsov seen in a few shots.) Admiral Kuznetsov is designated an Aircraft Carrier in the west and a "Heavy Aviation Cruiser" by her builders, combining an offensive air wing of Su-33 multirole fighters and Ka-27 antisubmarine helicopters with formidable point-defense and missile armament, including twelve deadly P-700 (SS-N-19) antiship missiles.

Unlike western carriers that use a steam catapult system to launch aircraft, the Kuznetsov allows aircraft to take off from a ski-ramp instead, reducing the stress on the pilot but also reducing maximum takeoff weight.

Take the brunt of Gaghiel's attack.
